Chapter 915: The Death Eater's Fear, Professor McGonagall Breaks the School Rules
Chapter 915: The Death Eater's Fear, Professor McGonagall Breaks the School Rules
"I'm afraid you didn't quite understand us, Professor McGonagall."
In Hogwarts, a slightly hunched, small-statured wizard with a mouse-like face stood before Professor McGonagall with an air of arrogance, looking up at her.
"Last night, the representatives of the Ministry of Magic and the Hogwarts Board of Governors held a meeting, and we unanimously agreed that you are no longer fit for the position of Headmaster."
"Oh?"
Professor McGonagall glanced at him, her expression indifferent. "If this is indeed the Ministry's decision, why isn't Amelia Bones here?"
"She has other matters to attend to and can't make it for now," said the small-statured wizard.
"Then wait until she's free and come talk to me," Professor McGonagall waved her hand impatiently. "I don't cling to this position, but the change of Hogwarts Headmaster is a significant matter, not something a Director of the Department of Magical Games and Sports can decide on their own."
"What did you say?" The small-statured wizard seemed to feel insulted, but soon calmed down and said, "But the Board of Governors has agreed, and compared to that, the Minister's opinion doesn't seem so important, does it!"
He took out a parchment filled with names.
"Do you need me to read it to you?" The small-statured wizard said proudly, "By unanimous decision of the Board of Governors, Professor Minerva McGonagall is relieved of her position as Headmaster, and Severus Snape will take over."
Professor McGonagall's face darkened, not expecting the Board of Governors to cause trouble at this time.
However, she remained unconcerned, looking disdainfully at the small-statured wizard as if he were some sort of filth.
"The Board of Governors does have the right to remove the Headmaster."
"Since you know that, it's good," the small-statured wizard sneered.
"But..." Professor McGonagall continued, "As far as I know, to exercise this right, all twelve Board members must agree. But the parchment you have..."
She glanced at the parchment, "There seem to be only nine signatures on it, which is a bit too short.
"So unfortunately, the content on this parchment is completely useless."
"You, damn..." The small-statured wizard, somewhat embarrassed and angry, took two steps forward, "You should recognize the situation, Professor McGonagall. Dumbledore is no longer here to support you. If you don't listen to me, everyone in the school will suffer."
"Creak!"
The door to the Headmaster's office was pushed open, and Kyle walked in from outside.
"I just heard someone mention suffering, is Hogwarts lunch so delicious that you want to take it home?"
"Who are you!" The small-statured wizard turned around and said harshly, "Get out, or you're dead."
"Oh, I recognize you." Kyle looked at his face and thought carefully, "It should be on the Hebrides, right? You're still alive?"
"My fault." Kyle shook his head regretfully.
The small-statured wizard finally got a good look at Kyle, and the anger on his face instantly turned into fear.
He, of course, remembered Kyle, and the memory was deep. In fact, any Death Eater who had been to the Hebrides would know him.
The Dark Lord had shown them Kyle's appearance and issued an order to kill him.
Since joining the Death Eaters, this was the first time he had seen the Dark Lord so intent on killing someone that he almost destroyed an entire island.
Even now, he could still recall the scene of the entire island being engulfed in raging flames.
Unfortunately, almost all the Death Eaters who remembered this incident had died, with only a few lucky ones escaping.
He was one of them.
But in his wildest dreams, he never thought he would see Kyle again, and in such a situation.
"You... you..." He pointed at Kyle, his eyes filled with fear, stammering and unable to speak.
"What, don't you remember me?" Kyle walked forward, smiling at him, "That's right, my ordinary appearance doesn't leave a deep impression. It's normal if you don't remember."
"But we are somewhat acquainted, give me some face and be polite to Professor McGonagall, okay?"
The small-statured Death Eater broke into a cold sweat, especially when he saw the wand in Kyle's hand. He stood stiffly, not daring to move.
Professor McGonagall was a bit puzzled. She didn't quite understand why, when facing this arrogant Death Eater, she had completely changed after seeing Kyle and became much more introverted.
Kyle continued to walk forward, one step, two steps...
His footsteps seemed to trample on the small-statured Death Eater's heart, and finally, his instinct overcame his fear, and he raised his wand high.
"Avada..."
"Imperius!"
The raised arm fell back down, and the light at the tip of the wand dimmed again. The small-statured Death Eater stood there, his expression blank, not moving.
"I guess I'm still not suited to using such Dark Magic." Kyle looked at his wand, recalling the awkwardness he felt when casting the spell, and shook his head helplessly.
"Kyle!" Professor McGonagall clutched her chest and said softly, "What did you do..."
"As you can see, Professor, it's the Imperius Curse," said Kyle. "He recognized me. If I didn't take care of him in advance, the Dark Mark might have appeared over Hogwarts in the next second."
Professor McGonagall recalled the small-statured Death Eater's actions... Indeed, it was the curse of the Dark Mark.
"What is going on here!" She forced herself to calm down and asked, "Why is the Director of the Department of Magical Games and Sports at Hogwarts, and why did he come with nine Board members to remove me from my position?"
"I don't know," Kyle shrugged.
He had been teaching his class when Armando Dippet, the Headmaster of Beauxbatons, suddenly appeared in the portrait of the Ancient Runes classroom and told him that someone was causing trouble in the Headmaster's office.
Then Kyle arrived and heard the small-statured wizard's words at the door... something about everyone in the school suffering.
To his surprise, the person turned out to be a familiar face.
When he had infiltrated the Hebrides disguised as a Death Eater, this man had been standing not far ahead of him, and Kyle vaguely remembered him.
"Oh no, the Ministry of Magic," Professor McGonagall exclaimed, her tension rising.
Had the Ministry already fallen to them? Professor McGonagall stumbled backward, landing on a chair, clutching her robe's collar tightly.
Kyle's face also turned pale.
"It's okay, Professor. Maybe he's just trying to scare us. I don't know what's happening, but we can take a look now."
He raised his wand again, pointing it at the Death Eater.
"Legilimency!"
Fortunately, this Death Eater wasn't skilled in Occlumency, and Kyle had managed to slip him a dose of Veritaserum.
Memories flooded in like a tide, and Kyle quickly scanned through them. After a moment, he heaved a sigh of relief.
"How is it...?" Professor McGonagall asked anxiously.
To be honest, she was afraid to look.
She couldn't imagine what would become of the British wizarding world if the Ministry of Magic had truly fallen to the Death Eaters.
"It's okay, Professor," Kyle said softly. "The Death Eaters have only occupied half of the Ministry. Minister Amelia Bones is still alive, and the Aurors and Hit Wizards are on our side."
"Phew..." Professor McGonagall relaxed, taking a few deep breaths.
"That's good... So what happened!"
"It's hard to explain in a few words. You should see for yourself." Kyle touched the Death Eater's forehead with his wand, and with a slight pull, he extracted a strand of shimmering light.
Professor McGonagall's eyes twitched.
With the memory extraction, along with the previous use of the Cruciatus Curse and Legilimency, Kyle had now committed three violations of the Wizarding Law in front of her.
Not just breaking school rules, but the Wizarding Law.
Especially the Cruciatus Curse, which could land him a solitary cell in Azkaban.
"Oh, sorry," Kyle seemed to realize his actions were inappropriate and stopped, pushing the strand of memory back in.
Then, with a wave of his wand, a velvet curtain materialized from the ceiling, perfectly blocking the view between him and Professor McGonagall.
Another vein popped out on Professor McGonagall's forehead.
What was this, trying to hide something?
"Hahaha!"
Laughter echoed from the wall, and Armando Dippet clutched his stomach, laughing heartily.
"I knew calling Kyle was the right choice. This is too interesting."
"Yes," Dumbledore nodded, "He always has unexpected ideas, but they work."
"Tsk, a rule-breaker," Phineas muttered from the side, "Using the Cruciatus Curse in the Headmaster's Office, it's lawlessness! Someone like that doesn't deserve to be a professor."
"Huh?" Armando Dippet's face darkened, and he said grimly, "I called Kyle here, are you questioning my decision?"
Without waiting for Phineas to explain, he brandished a wolf-headed club that appeared from nowhere and swung it horizontally.
"Thud!"
"Ouch!"
After a dull thud, there was a painful cry.
But the other headmasters didn't intervene, closing their eyes as if they hadn't seen it, just like they pretended not to see Kyle using the Cruciatus Curse.
Professor McGonagall's head buzzed, suppressing the urge to take down and throw out a certain pair of portraits.
She had always thought the portraits in the Headmaster's Office were quite serious. Usually, they just pretended to sleep, and there were rarely any abnormal behaviors. How did they suddenly become like this?
Had they been pretending before?
Or perhaps, it was after a certain portrait was added that they became like this...
Professor McGonagall glanced at Dumbledore's portrait on the wall, intentionally or not.
Fortunately, at that moment, the velvet curtain disappeared, and Kyle looked around before smoothly taking out a Pensieve from the cabinet and placing the memory from his wand into it.
The memory seemed like a shimmering fish, swirling rapidly within the Pensieve.
Professor McGonagall naturally knew how to use it and leaned in.
The vortex took her away from the Headmaster's Office to the Ministry of Magic, where she saw the furious Scrimgeour and Minister Amelia Bones confronting the Death Eaters.
Thankfully, it was just as Kyle had said.
Although the Ministry had undergone some changes, it hadn't been occupied, and Minister Bones was still alive.
Soon, Professor McGonagall emerged from the memory.
"The situation is still quite serious," she said, looking at the motionless Death Eater beside Kyle. "What do you plan to do with him?"
"Of course..." Kyle's voice trailed off for a moment before continuing, "...send him to Azkaban."
"But Azkaban is no longer reliable, and you know that."
"It's fine," Kyle waved his hand, "I know a place that's similar to Azkaban, guarded by Dementors. Sending him there will be the same."
"Oh?" Professor McGonagall asked curiously, "Where is this place?"
She had lived in Britain for so long, yet she had never heard of different divisions within Azkaban.
"Well, you don't need to ask about that. The setup is more or less the same," Kyle said with an awkward laugh.
He was, of course, referring to the Dementor in his trunk, who hadn't had a full meal since following him, and Kyle sometimes felt guilty about it.
With this opportunity, Kyle also planned to give the Dementor a special treat and let it eat to its heart's content.
That way, Newt wouldn't keep saying he was mistreating the Dementor.
Moreover, this Death Eater might provide other valuable assistance.
"What if I take him into my custody?" Professor McGonagall asked after a moment's contemplation.
"Huh?" Kyle responded.
"You used the Imperius Curse to control him, didn't you?" Professor McGonagall bluntly exposed Kyle's intentions. "Don't you want the one whose name shall not be spoken to know that you're at Hogwarts?"
"No, it's not that. He must know I'm here," Kyle shook his head. "Maybe this won't please you, but some people in Slytherin have seen me, so Voldemort should already be aware of my presence."
At the mention of the name, Professor McGonagall tugged at her collar again.
Kyle, however, remained relatively unfazed. He had discovered something intriguing in the Death Eater's memories.
Voldemort had never shown himself, neither during their attack on the Ministry nor in any other activities.
Kyle guessed that he must be injured.
When they were in the Hebrides, Voldemort hadn't completely evaded his Fiendfyre.
This was currently the most powerful offensive magic Kyle possessed, and with the combination of Runic magic and the enhancement of raging flames, even Voldemort couldn't have escaped unscathed.
Additionally, back in Godric's Hollow, he seemed to have been struck by the lightning summoned by Dumbledore's magic.
With old and new injuries, Voldemort, being the cautious person he was, would definitely not show himself so easily.
Dumbledore's previous actions were intended to lower Voldemort's guard, hoping to lure him out.
But judging from the current situation, Voldemort was even more patient than they had imagined. He hadn't emerged to savor the fruits of victory, even after Dumbledore's supposed 'death'.
Kyle had been contemplating other strategies lately.
This Death Eater before him provided a potential solution.
If they could capture all the Death Eaters at the Ministry, Voldemort wouldn't be able to hold back any longer.
It was a risky move, though, as it could easily affect Amelia Bones and her team.
"Since you're the one who stopped him from casting the Dark Mark, why did you do it?" Professor McGonagall suddenly asked, interrupting Kyle's thoughts.
"The situation was urgent, and I didn't know what spell he was going to use," Kyle explained, spreading his hands. "I thought he would use the Killing Curse, but he ended up summoning reinforcements. What a coward, and he calls himself a Death Eater... Embarrassing."
Professor McGonagall's eyes flickered, feigning ignorance of Kyle's sarcasm.
"Then why did you control him?"
"I don't know," Kyle continued. "I overheard some of your conversation at the door, and I learned that he's the Head of the Department of Magical Games and Sports. At the time, I wasn't clear about what was happening at the Ministry, but I felt that if I could control him, it might be useful.
"At the very least, he can return and act as a spy within the Ministry, keeping an eye on those Death Eaters."
Professor McGonagall frowned, pondering Kyle's words seriously. She glanced at the small, hunched Death Eater and shook her head after a long while.
"It won't work."
"What?"
"Your Imperius Curse is a bit... weak," Professor McGonagall chose her words carefully, trying to make her tone less harsh.
"To be honest, your Imperius Curse is effective mostly because of his fear of you. I doubt it will be long before he breaks free from your control."
As she spoke, the Death Eater's body twitched, and his fingers were trembling and curling uncontrollably.
These were signs that he was about to break free from the Imperius Curse.
"Alright," Kyle said with a hint of helplessness.
There was nothing he could do; his magic was too pure, and when using the Imperius Curse, which required negative emotions, it naturally wouldn't have a significant effect.
But that was just the way it was; there were always trade-offs.
"Let me take him," Professor McGonagall said, waving her wand. A silvery net fell onto the Death Eater, enveloping him and lifting him into the air.
"If Hogwarts and the Death Eaters are destined for battle, I want to ensure we have the initiative."
"And the students' evacuation will take time. Before everything is ready, I want their attention diverted from Hogwarts temporarily."
"Of course, no problem," Kyle agreed, as Professor McGonagall had already given her consent.
"But Professor McGonagall, he might not be so cooperative. Do I need to help find a suitable replacement?"
"I recommend Cedric. He has experience impersonating Death Eaters, and he's meticulous. As long as he studies the Pensieve a few more times to understand their personalities, he won't be exposed."
"Experience impersonating Death Eaters?" Professor McGonagall glanced at Kyle. "I remember seeing Mr. Diggory in the castle before. Could it be..."
Kyle realized he had let something slip, but he maintained his composure.
"Ah, he came to see me that time. I was talking about an earlier incident when we were hunting Dementors together."
"Oh," Professor McGonagall nodded, unconcerned.
"There's no need to bother Mr. Diggory with this." She continued.
The Death Eater, suspended in the net, had already broken free and was struggling vigorously. However, Kyle had already thrown his wand aside, rendering his struggles somewhat futile.
It was just a bit noisy.
"Although I detest the Imperius Curse, it doesn't mean I don't know how to cast it," Professor McGonagall said with a conflicted expression. But after a moment, she made a decision and slowly extended her wand.
"Soul Departure!"
The Headmaster's office fell silent.
"Oh!" Dumbledore's portrait exclaimed, turning to the person beside him with an incredulous tone. "Armando, did you see that? Minerva used an Unforgivable Curse in the Headmaster's office!"
"I saw it, Albus."
Armando Dippet rubbed his eyes. "Merlin's beard, I must be dreaming!"
