Chapter 91: The Quidditch Match
Chapter 91: The Quidditch Match
The morning of the Quidditch match, Kyle met Cedric by the Hufflepuff changing room before the game.
Compared to a week ago, Cedric looked a size thinner and more haggard, but his eyes shone with determination.
"We're going to win!" Cedric declared, holding his Nimbus 1700 tightly as he turned and strode into the changing room.
Kyle could tell that he was still a bit nervous, as Cedric's walk was not as steady as usual.
By the time Kyle made his way up to the stands, it was already packed with students. As one of the most popular activities at Hogwarts, the Quidditch stadium was always bustling with spectators.
Especially for a crucial match like today.
Kyle squeezed through the crowd and made his way to the front row, where Mick and Ryan had already saved him a great spot.
Conner handed him a banner embroidered with a badger and the words "Hufflepuff for the Win!" The little witch had made it herself, even using Revealing Charms, so the badger on it was waving its front paws non-stop.
Kyle took it and immediately used a Floating Charm to display it in the most prominent position nearby.
"We're going to win! I have a feeling Hufflepuff will bring home the Quidditch Cup this year!" Mick exclaimed excitedly.
"Of course," Kyle agreed. "Mick, I'm sure you have the gift of prophecy."
"Haha, I think so too," Mick grinned.
Just then, the players entered the field.
"Look, they're here!"
A seventh-year student with golden long hair took the microphone and shouted, "First up is the Slytherin Quidditch team. Although they lost many points due to accidents in the previous matches, they did not give up. Under the leadership of Captain Rozier, they caught up and successively defeated Ravenclaw and the top-ranked Gryffindor."
"In today's match, will they be able to create a miracle and achieve a triple championship? Let's wait and see!"
"Oh! The Hufflepuff team is here too!"
The commentator raised his voice again, "First up is Captain Harris, an excellent Chaser whose goal-scoring record remains unbroken. Hufflepuff's success today is thanks to Harris's contribution.
"Following him is the Beater..."
"And finally, the Seeker, Cedric Diggory, who has filled the only gap in the Hufflepuff team!"
"Both teams are evenly matched, and this is definitely a game that everyone is looking forward to."
The commentator grew more and more excited, leaning forward in his seat.
Led by his enthusiasm, the crowd in the stands cheered non-stop, and the yellow and green flags waved like a sea of color.
However, there were slightly more people supporting Hufflepuff, accounting for about three-quarters of the total number of students.
Gryffindor definitely wouldn't be cheering for Slytherin.
Although Ravenclaw's stance was not as firm, due to the badgers' good relationships, and the fact that Harris would occasionally let Ravenclaw score to avoid a complete blowout, half of the eagles were also cheering for Hufflepuff this time.
"Both sides have taken their positions, and the match is about to begin!"
Madame Hooch, the referee, flew into the middle of the field on her broomstick.
Once everyone was mounted on their brooms, Madam Hooch blew her silver whistle sharply.
Fifteen brooms soared into the air, ascending high into the sky.
The game had begun.
"The Quaffle has been seized first by Hufflepuff's Harris, maintaining his consistent performance...
Marcus Flint has been knocked off his broom! He tried to block Harris's advance... What a feint! Harris dodges and now faces the Slytherin goal posts.
Keeper Bletchley dives... Can he make the save...? He missed, and the Quaffle soars through, scored by Harris!
Hufflepuff takes the lead, 10 to 0!"
"Ooooooh~~"
The chilly air reverberated with the cheers of Hufflepuff supporters, interspersed with angry roars and groans from the Slytherins.
Excited, Conner grabbed Kyle's arm and shook it vigorously.
Normally, this wouldn't be a problem, but the little witch had an absurd amount of strength.
Kyle felt like his arm was trapped in a pair of tiger jaws, the pain causing him to grimace.
He couldn't understand how Conner, who looked so frail and ate so little, could have such strength.
Fortunately, her attention soon returned to the game.
Kyle rubbed his arm, discreetly edging slightly to the side.
In that brief moment of distraction, the situation on the field changed once more. Marcus had seized the Quaffle, and Slytherin, with their superior brooms, rushed towards the Hufflepuff goal posts ahead of Harris and his teammates.
"Marcus is making a pass... No, it's a shot!
What a feint! He deceived everyone, including the Hufflepuff Keeper. Rozier scores, and Slytherin equalizes.
It's 10-10!"
Now it was Slytherin's turn to cheer.
"Two goals in under a minute, both with impeccable feints."
The commentator's face flushed with excitement. "This is incredible! What a thrilling match!"
The game continued, with both sides trading goals and the score remaining close.
Especially in the first twenty minutes, Hufflepuff pulled ahead by a mere ten points, despite their best efforts.
The Slytherin players were performing exceptionally, almost suspiciously so. Marcus Flint even went as far as to block an incoming Quaffle with his face when the Keeper missed, earning him cheers not just from his own house but also from Hufflepuff players like Harris, and Gryffindor's Charlie, among others.
Regardless of Marcus's questionable tactics in previous matches, his actions at this moment were admirable.
However, things changed again after thirty minutes.
Slytherin's speed visibly slowed, and their offense and defense lacked the previous fervor.
In just about ten minutes, Hufflepuff scored three more goals, extending their lead to 90-50.
