Chapter 91: Big Brother and Big Sister
Chapter 91: Big Brother and Big Sister
Today, Deng Yuntao was going to register his marriage with Zhang Xiuping in Songshan. He woke up early, changed into a clean set of clothes, and hurriedly finished his breakfast. Then, he rode the family’s bicycle to Longtan.
Young and full of energy, and with this being their second meeting, Deng Yuntao was eager to see Zhang Xiuping as soon as possible. He pedaled the bicycle as fast as he could, and in less than an hour, he arrived at Longtan Market, astonishingly quick.
Upon reaching Longtan Market, Deng Yuntao waited for Zhang Xiuping at the agreed spot in front of the Supply and Marketing Cooperative.
It didn’t take long, perhaps less than twenty minutes, before Zhang Xiuping appeared in front of him, dressed in a new outfit.
The moment Zhang Xiuping appeared, Deng Yuntao’s heart rate tripled.
Although she wore no makeup, in Deng Yuntao’s eyes, she was perfect from head to toe, and every smile and frown made his heart race.
As Zhang Xiuping approached, Deng Yuntao greeted her first, “Sis Ping, you’re here!”
Zhang Xiuping, a bit embarrassed that he had arrived so early, replied, “Brother Tai, I kept you waiting!”
“Not long at all, I just got here myself.” Deng Yuntao asked, “Have you had breakfast?”
Zhang Xiuping nodded, “I’ve already eaten. What about you? Have you eaten?”
“I’ve eaten too. Shall we go?”
“Sure, let’s go!”
Deng Yuntao got on the bicycle, placed one foot on a nearby stone, and turned to Zhang Xiuping with a smile, “Hop on!”
Zhang Xiuping responded and sat sideways on the bicycle’s rear seat.
Deng Yuntao said, “We’re ready to go. Hold on tight!”
Thinking about how this man would soon be her husband, Zhang Xiuping reached out and grabbed the sides of his shirt.
Feeling her hands around his waist, Deng Yuntao felt a surge of energy and pedaled even harder, and the bicycle shot forward.
Although the road from Longtan to Songshan was a county-level highway, it was far from the smooth roads of the future. It had many turns, frequent uphill and downhill sections, and an uneven surface, causing the bicycle to jolt and bounce.
With Deng Yuntao riding at a fast pace, the jolts became more intense. At first, Zhang Xiuping only held onto his shirt, but as the jolts continued, she gradually shifted to holding his waist.
This change excited Deng Yuntao even more, and he pedaled even faster!
Within ten minutes, feeling increasingly insecure from the jolts, Zhang Xiuping bit her lip and wrapped her arms around Deng Yuntao’s waist, not letting go until they reached Songshan Market.
Riding for nearly forty to fifty minutes with a passenger, Deng Yuntao didn’t feel tired at all. If anything, he was disappointed that the journey was too short.
No wonder they say, “When men and women work together, the work is never tiring.”
They arrived at the Songshan Commune just after ten o’clock. After a brief rest, they went to complete the marriage registration procedures.
The process was straightforward, and in less than half an hour, they had their marriage certificate in hand.
Although in this era, rural areas considered the wedding day as the true beginning of marriage, having the marriage certificate meant they were legally recognized as a married couple. This made a significant difference psychologically.
Deng Yuntao could clearly see that from the moment they received the certificate, Zhang Xiuping’s attitude towards him became much warmer.
“Sis Ping, are you hungry? What would you like to eat?”
“I’m fine with anything. What do you want to eat?”
This display of harmony made Deng Yuntao grin so wide it could fit a goose egg. He said, “Let’s go to the state-owned restaurant and see how the chefs here cook!”
Zhang Xiuping replied, “Brother Tai, the food at the state-owned restaurant is too expensive. We can just find a street stall and eat something simple.”
Deng Yuntao said, “This is our first meal after getting the certificate. We can’t be too casual. Don’t worry, my income from the big vat is good. We can’t eat there every day, but we can afford it every now and then.”
Zhang Xiuping, considering her husband’s substantial financial resources, decided not to say anything more.
So, the two of them made their way to the state-owned restaurant in Songshan Market.
...
It was noon.
Songshan High School.
After school, Deng Yunheng and Zhu Chenglong headed to the cafeteria to have lunch.
On the way, Zhu Chenglong asked, "Brother Yunheng, do you want some pickled vegetables?"
Last week, Deng Yunheng didn’t go home, but Zhu Chenglong did, and he brought back a jar of delicious braised pork belly with pickled vegetables. There were only two pieces of pork belly, but the rest was pickled vegetables. This was already a rare treat for Zhu Chenglong.
The two of them were good friends, and Deng Yunheng had shared a lot of his leftover food with Zhu Chenglong. So now, every day at mealtime, Zhu Chenglong would ask if Yunheng wanted some pickled vegetables and would scoop some out for him if he did.
The braised pork belly with pickled vegetables was quite rich and flavorful. The local pickled vegetables were perfect for enhancing the taste of rice or porridge.
Deng Yunheng nodded and said, "Sure, scoop some out for me. I’ll go to the cafeteria to buy some meat and vegetables to go with it."
Zhu Chenglong hesitated and said, "Brother Yunheng, you should keep the meat and vegetables for yourself. I’ve already had my fair share of meat thanks to you. This jar of pickled vegetables has plenty of oil and flavor. Once it’s finished, you can help me out again!"
As Deng Yunheng was about to respond, he heard his brother’s voice, "Yunheng!"
Deng Yunheng looked in the direction of the voice and saw his brother and his soon-to-be sister-in-law coming to visit him. He was pleasantly surprised and said, "Brother, Sister-in-law, what are you doing here?"
Deng Yuntao smiled and said, "We happened to be in the commune on some business, so we decided to stop by and see you. Is this your classmate?"
Without waiting for an introduction, Zhu Chenglong greeted them, "Hello, Brother. I’m Zhu Chenglong, and I’m Yunheng’s classmate."
"Hello, Zhu classmate!" Deng Yuntao greeted him warmly.
Zhang Xiuping had already registered her marriage with Deng Yuntao, so she wasn’t as shy as before when Yunheng called her Sister-in-law.
After greeting Zhu Chenglong, Zhang Xiuping handed the packed lunch to Deng Yunheng and said, "Yunheng, we brought you some food."
Deng Yunheng took the meal wrapped in oil paper and said with delight, "That’s great! I’ve been getting tired of the cafeteria food and was planning to go home this week for a change. I wonder what Dad cooked?"
Deng Yuntao laughed and said, "It’s not something your dad cooked. We got this from the state-owned restaurant. The chef there is quite skilled, and the food tastes pretty good. It’s still warm, so you should take it and share it with your classmate. We have to head back now."
