Chapter 904: Inspection and the Pendant
Chapter 904: Inspection and the Pendant
After dealing with the Muggles who were screaming and shouting, the lead Aurors quickly turned their attention to Ivan, scrutinizing him for a moment before demanding an explanation.
"Tell me your name and your purpose here, Wizard! Not just anyone would come to this remote little town during such a special period... Additionally, your sudden move against them disrupted our plans. We’ve been tracking them all day..."
The Aurors looked quite unhappy. They had finally caught a couple of rats and were hoping to see if they could lure a bigger fish, but Ivan’s arrival had ruined everything.
He even suspected that this young man, who appeared to be no more than seventeen or eighteen, might be an accomplice of the two Wizards.
"I think you’ve misunderstood, sir. This commotion has nothing to do with me. It was just a sudden whim of these two Wizards to play a prank on the Muggles in the inn", Ivan replied calmly, his expression composed. "If you don’t believe me, you can question these people..."
At this point, Ivan hesitated, suddenly remembering that the two Wizards had been very discreet when casting their spells. Questioning the Muggles wouldn’t reveal anything and wouldn’t help clear his name.
Fortunately, the Auror who had just finished casting a spell recognized him and exclaimed, "Ivan? What are you doing here..."
Hearing the familiar voice, Ivan turned to look. The speaker was a Witch with silver hair, her clear and beautiful face exuding a unique charm.
"Fleur?!" Ivan was somewhat surprised. He hadn’t expected to run into an acquaintance so soon after arriving in France, and in such a peculiar situation.
But after the initial surprise, Ivan quickly regained his composure. Noticing the standard Auror robes she was wearing, he smiled and said, "It’s been over a year, and you’ve become an Auror? Congratulations!"
"Just an intern, I haven’t officially started yet", Fleur shrugged, her lips curling into a smile. Out of all the graduates from their year, only she had been selected to join the Auror program.
"Cough, cough..." The lead Auror cleared his throat, interrupting their conversation. He looked at Fleur, clearly displeased that she had started chatting with the suspect, and asked, "You know him, Ms. Delacour? Are you perhaps Beauxbatons alumni?"
"No, Ivan is a student from Hogwarts in Britain. We met during the Triwizard Tournament", Fleur explained, then added in surprise, "Captain Bruno, haven’t you seen Hals’s feats in the newspapers?"
Bruno was taken aback. He had certainly heard about last year’s Triwizard Tournament.
However, Beauxbatons had lost badly, and the event was overshadowed by the two Hogwarts Champions. Even the mainstream media had been vague, hinting that the Hogwarts Champions had cheated, so he hadn’t paid much attention to the tournament.
"Since you’re a student from Hogwarts, what brings you to France? And why did you come to this small town specifically?" Bruno didn’t let his guard down just because the young Wizard had some fame. He pressed on with his questioning, showing no mercy.
"If you’ve read any British newspapers, you would know that I graduated early from Hogwarts this year. As for why I’m here..." Ivan hesitated for a moment, deciding there was no need to hide the truth, and continued, "I came to France to—"
"Let me put it this way, I have a keen interest in the study of Magical Creatures, so I volunteered to be Mr. Scamander's assistant to help research and capture the Thunderbird. Here is my identification. Do you have any other questions, Brunomaster?"
Ivan took out a few booklets that Pierce had given him from his Trunk and placed them on the table. This time, he wasn't sneaking in; he had been officially hired by the International Confederation of Wizards, albeit under the guise of an apprentice.
Bruno gave him a suspicious glance, then picked up the identification and examined it carefully. Once he confirmed it was genuine, he casually asked a few questions about the Thunderbird's habits and habitats. Seeing that Ivan answered fluently, he relaxed his guard a bit.
Ivan also breathed a sigh of relief. Although he wasn't afraid of these Aurors, if they decided to make things difficult, it would be a problem.
He couldn't just beat up these law enforcers over a minor issue, could he? This was France, not Britain, and causing a diplomatic incident would be disastrous.
With his suspicions about Ivan dispelled, Bruno strode over to the two unconscious male wizards, opened one's shirt, and pulled out a silver triangular pendant.
Ivan's eyes narrowed as he watched this. The design of the pendant was very familiar—it was the Deathly Hallows… no, it was the symbol of the Death Eaters!
Over fifty years ago, Grindelwald, obsessed with the power of the Deathly Hallows, often used this symbol to represent himself, and his followers frequently wore similar items.
"Captain Bruno, may I ask if these two are escaped criminals?" Ivan inquired tentatively.
"This isn't your concern, boy!" Bruno looked at Ivan with extreme caution, staring at him for a long moment before speaking. "I'll give you one piece of advice: this town isn't safe these days. Stay away from any unfamiliar wizards and don't go looking for trouble, understand?"
"I will be careful", Ivan replied calmly, immediately abandoning any hope of getting information from Bruno. Using Legilimency was out of the question.
This Auror captain was extremely vigilant, clearly a seasoned professional. A rash attempt at Legilimency might be detected by him.
Bruno could see that the male wizard in front of him wasn't really listening to his words, but he had already done his duty by warning him. He waved his hand, signaling the Aurors to take the captured criminals away.
Before leaving, Fleur gave Ivan an apologetic look. As just an apprentice Auror, she had no say and couldn't do anything to help him.
Once the Aurors had left, the seven Muggles in the inn were released from the Confundus Charm. They continued their meal in a daze, as if the recent disturbance had been nothing more than an illusion. No one noticed that the two people who had been sitting next to them had been taken away.
Seeing this, Ivan gained some insight into why many wizards considered themselves superior. To a certain extent, Muggles were nothing more than playthings in their hands, oblivious even when manipulated.
