Chapter 901: Lizzy
Chapter 901: Lizzy
"Alright, you can come in now."
With a deep-toned command, the black house before Lindsey revealed a creaking, grating sound as its front door opened.
The aged and rusty hinges wailed in protest.
The door appeared sturdy, but its hinges seemed ready to snap at any moment.
As the door slowly opened, revealing just enough space for a person to pass through, Lindsey saw two figures, one tall and one short, staring at him.
The shorter one was, of course, the child who had questioned him from above.
The taller one seemed to be his older brother, his thin frame accentuated by his height, giving him an overall unhealthy appearance.
"Thank you so much."
Lindsey nodded in gratitude and hurried inside, the door creaking shut behind him.
"Hmm?"
Lindsey's gaze swept the surroundings.
This cluster of black buildings surprisingly maintained a high level of cleanliness, with no trace of the musty or foul odors typically found in ordinary homes.
"Follow me, and you stay up there, Ah Fang. Don't fall asleep again in the middle of the night." The tall, thin man turned to lead the way while speaking to the child.
"Hey!"
"Don't worry, I noticed right away when someone came by just now, didn't I?"
The child nodded.
He climbed the dry wooden ladder beside him to the second floor and continued to keep watch from his peephole.
Lindsey followed the tall, thin man through the interior of the house.
Soon enough, he heard the man's inquiry:
"Friend, who told you about us that you managed to find this place?"
Lindsey had already used his Atmospheric Sense to perceive the man's words, and now he honed in on his target, launching into a special forces-style response:
"I... I just heard that this place is filled with people like me..."
Lindsey's words were hesitant and weak.
As expected, this statement struck a chord with the tall, thin man leading the way, causing him to slow down.
"Then, where is your family?"
Lindsey told the truth:
"All my blood relatives... I haven't seen them in over ten years."
"..."
"My condolences."
Lindsey's honesty stirred up more melancholy thoughts in the tall, thin man.
Most of the refugees who arrived in the City of Law had lost their loved ones during their escape, and not all of them had died.
Those who had lost everything in their hometowns often lost the will to make it to the City of Law.
Some who made it to the City of Law were like walking corpses.
Lindsey's situation was even more exaggerated.
Ten years.
He found it hard to imagine how someone could survive alone for a decade in this war-torn land, let alone make it all the way to the outskirts of the City of Law with no one to rely on.
"Friend, what's your name?"
Lindsey casually gave a fake name:
"I'm Robinson."
The tall, thin man replied:
"I'm Danny. You're safe here. If you have any questions, just ask me. Tonight, you should get some rest..."
As Lindsey was about to be led to a place of rest, he became reluctant.
After all, he had come to gather information, not to infiltrate and establish a long-term spy identity.
Lindsey quickly thought of a plan.
His tone remained weak, as before:
"I... I heard that there are very powerful Awakened individuals here."
"Actually, I'm cursed, and if no one deals with it, not only will I suffer, but others might be harmed as well. What exactly is going on here..."
Lindsey's voice trailed off.
And so, the tall and thin man, whose thoughts and sorrows were stirred by the other, spoke with genuine concern.
"Curse... If that's the case, then come with me."
"We do have an Awakened One here, and he's an incredibly powerful believer! Trust me, you can receive a baptism from him..."
Before their conversation could conclude, an old man, who had been dozing nearby, was roused.
Wrapped in a blanket, he rolled over on the ground, looking at Lindsey with a gaze that was both sad and comical.
"Curse... to lift a curse?"
"If you ask me, living in this world is a curse in itself. If you truly want to escape suffering, you might as well give yourself a clean cut and end it all."
The tall and thin man immediately addressed the old man.
"Old Man Gao, don't say that!"
"We're all unfortunate souls stranded here; there's no need to speak like that."
"..."
"Hmph!"
The old man turned away, hugging the blanket around himself, no longer paying attention to anyone, and continued to sleep right there.
Lindsey was about to continue forward with Danny.
But their conversation hadn't resumed yet.
What Lindsey wanted arrived even faster than anticipated.
Because not long after the old man turned away, a young girl's voice suddenly rang out from the upper left of Lindsey and Danny.
"If it's about lifting curses, let me take a look."
"Whether it's harming the flesh or oppressing the soul, I can help lift it."
Lindsey looked up.
A girl of seventeen or eighteen was poking her head out of the loft door above.
Her long red hair flowed down the door frame, and although her face was a bit thin, the power of Essence as an Awakened One nourished her appearance, preventing her from appearing emaciated. Amidst her beautiful features, a pair of golden, clear irises stood out, even in the darkness of the moonless house, drawing particular attention.
"Miss Lizzy!"
Danny, who was leading the way, was overjoyed.
He had originally intended to show Lindsey a regular believer, but the person before them couldn't be further from the word 'regular'! Danny immediately turned and said to Lindsey:
"Robinson, come over here quickly."
"This is Miss Lizzy, one of the strongest Awakened Ones here!"
"If you want to lift your curse, there's no one better suited for the task than her."
Danny held Miss Lizzy in high regard, even hesitating to go upstairs.
Lindsey climbed up the ladder next to the loft door, following the girl inside. During this, he activated his Detection Skill, and the displayed prompt confirmed that she wasn't deceiving him.
[Human Awakened One - A powerful faith power surrounds the girl, possessing the characteristics of Will Essence.]
"..."
"Miss Lizzy..."
Lindsey called out her name, climbing the ladder and entering the room.
He looked around.
The room was spotlessly clean, containing a bed, a counter, a chair, and a small prayer altar—the entirety of this modest abode.
"Robinson, right? Come, sit over here."
Lizzy's attitude was warm, and her tone was gentle.
She moved her chair to the center and sat down, instead gesturing for Lindsey to sit on the more comfortable bed.
"Come, let me take a look at the curse on your body."
The girl's fair face smiled, and the map displayed a green, friendly attitude.
"..."
Lindsey thought for a moment before extending his hand.
