Chapter 90: Lanchi Was So Close to Heaven
Chapter 90: Lanchi Was So Close to Heaven
In the early morning of the royal capital, Yicolit, a faint blue hue permeated the sky, and the air was especially fresh throughout the city during this cool autumn season.
East of Yicolit Academy, after crossing two streets, you'd find yourself on a street lined with shops.
A quaint little diner emanated a homely smoke, along with the enticing aroma of oatmeal and cheese for breakfast.
Lanchi stood at the entrance, a hint of confusion on his face, gazing up at the typical two-story wooden building. A sign hung above the door, bearing the name "Cat Boss Restaurant."
While the structure was constructed from slightly rustic, tea-colored wood, its design and decor exuded an old Victorian charm. The expansive roof curved elegantly, and the eaves extended far beyond the walls, giving a sense of spaciousness. The area beneath the eaves formed a relaxing balcony where patrons could converse, dine, or simply unwind. Hanging from the deep eaves was a set of wind chimes that tinkled pleasantly whenever a gentle breeze blew.
This was the new address Talia had given to Lanchi.
Although it was primarily a restaurant, the second floor seemed to double as a lodging house for travelers.
The rent for an extended stay here probably wouldn't be too exorbitant, but more importantly, Lanchi was confident that the food served here must be exceptionally delicious and unique to have caught the attention of the culinary connoisseur, Talia.
As Lanchi pushed open the door, a gentle tinkling sound accompanied the revelation of the restaurant's intricate interior. The first floor was simply laid out, with tables and chairs arranged in several distinct sections, leaving ample space for a counter near the entrance and pathways to the kitchen and the second floor.
It seemed that breakfast wasn't their main offering, as there were only a handful of customers at this hour, and even the staff member behind the counter was multitasking as a waiter.
"Hello, I'm looking for Miss Tata, who resides here." Lanchi said casually as he waited patiently at the counter.
"Miss Tata... I'm sorry, I also just started working here recently and am not very familiar with the guests staying here," the staff member apologized with a puzzled expression.
She looked quite young, probably a peer, working a part-time job.
"If you could describe her features, I can't reveal which room she's staying in, but I'd be happy to go upstairs and help you look for her." She offered kindly.
She didn't sense any ill intentions from Lanchi; he exuded an air of warmth and friendliness.
"Well, she's extremely beautiful, with a height of 168 centimeters. She looks to be around 20 to 25 years old, with gray hair and golden eyes. Her figure is the ideal healthy physique, and she hasn't given birth before. She's also very laconic and never smiles." Lanchi painted a vivid picture of Talia's attributes.
Ever since he failed to adequately describe Talia to the butler back in his hometown of South Ventina, he had been pondering how to perfectly capture her essence through words.
Before Lanchi could finish his description, he felt a sudden chill run down his spine for no apparent reason.
Soon, a cold hand rested on his shoulder, and he felt the weight of a domineering gaze fixed upon him—a pair of cold, golden eyes belonging to an unquestionable superior, exuding a terrifying aura that oppressed his entire being.
The staff member shivered, feeling as if the temperature in the restaurant had dropped by a couple of degrees. She rubbed her arms, trying to ward off the sudden chill.
"Are you referring to the lady standing behind you?" She asked cautiously, her voice laced with confusion as she lifted her hand and pointed slightly to Lanchi's side.
"Probably," Lanchi replied, maintaining his unwavering smile as he slowly turned his head.
His body felt pinned down by a mountain, allowing only his head to move.
Lanchi saw Talia standing right behind him.
Her slender hand, which could crush his shoulder with ease, held a paper box of Ikelite sea salt cheese cookies, a delicacy that often sold out early in the morning, prompting the people of the royal capital to line up for it at the crack of dawn.
"Good morning, Miss Tata," Lanchi greeted, relieved to see that Talia's appetite remained as hearty as ever.
It seemed that she had been enjoying herself during the two days he was away, which put his mind at ease.
He just hoped she wouldn't put on weight; it would be difficult enough to find her a husband with her age and temperament, and added weight would only make it harder.
"Follow me," Talia said, slowly releasing her grip on his shoulder.
Her tone was unreadable, but each word carried a hint of murderous intent.
Lanchi promptly thanked the staff member and followed Talia obediently, his mouth shut tight, as they made their way upstairs, the wooden stairs creaking under their feet.
Talia led him to the very end of the hallway, where she took out a key from her pocket and unlocked the door to her new residence.
"Get in," she said coldly.
Lanchi wasted no time in stepping into the room.
"Not bad, Tata, you've got quite an eye for places," he commented, taking in the cozy space.
The ceiling was crafted from wooden boards and slanted beams, featuring a glass skylight that created a terrace-like ambiance, inviting stargazing on clear nights.
The walls were painted in a soft blend of cream, light orange, and beige, exuding warmth and brightness, while the wooden furniture had been carefully polished by the restaurant owner, showcasing its natural beauty.
Talia ignored Lanchi's remark and took a seat in the room's lone wooden armchair.
Lanchi eyed the small tea table next to the chair, adorned with a few newspapers and magazines, imagining Talia spending her days here in retirement.
As he pondered, Talia's gaze fixed on him once more.
Though she lacked concrete evidence, Talia's intuition grew stronger by the day, leading her to suspect that Lanchi's mind was constantly occupied with despicable thoughts.
The stimulation of her curiosity, day after day, caused her innate magic to react more intensely. At the very least, she was now certain that Lanchi's mind was abuzz with activity whenever they were together.
Aside from restoring her nation, Talia's sole desire at the moment was to develop her innate magic from lie detection to full-fledged mind-reading, so she could uncover the thoughts lurking within Lanchi's mind.
"What are you doing here?" Talia asked, her voice as cold as ice.
She had been contemplating approaching Lanchi to gather information about the incident in the Demon Shadow World a couple of days ago.
However, the thought of him potentially thinking vile thoughts about her every day made her blood boil.
As a result, she had put off contacting him, choosing instead to wait for him to make the first move.
She hadn't expected him to take the initiative so soon.
It seemed that this human was even more dependent on her than she had imagined.
And yet, as expected, seeing him only made her mood sour.
