Chapter 9: Fear Curse
Hermione's mouth hung open in disbelief. She still remembered how, just yesterday in the Transfiguration class, Ivan had struggled to even stabilize a Transfiguration Spell. How could he have become so powerful today?
After completing the Transfiguration, Ivan didn't linger. He left Hermione standing there in shock and returned to the Gryffindor common room on his own.
With a book in hand, Ivan was walking back to his dormitory when he ran into Harry and Ron, who were playing Wizard Flag. Both of them looked as if they had seen a ghost.
Ron's eyes nearly popped out of his head as he saw the book Detailed Principles of Basic Spells in Ivan's hand. The Knight he was holding in his right hand dropped onto the table with a thud.
The Knight, whose armor was shattered from the fall, grumbled and brandished a sword as thick as a toothpick, chopping down on Ron's left thumbnail.
"Ouch!" Ron's left hand jerked, sending the Knight flying to the side. He then looked at the crack in his thumbnail, angrily picked up a cup, and smashed the Knight to pieces, tossing the remains into a box to await automatic repair.
Ron then clutched his thumb, looking worried as he said to Harry, "Harry, do you think Ivan will end up just like Hermione?"
"Probably not", Harry replied, though he sounded uncertain.
The thought of two Hermiones lecturing them made both of them shudder.
Back in the dormitory, Ivan was unaware that Harry and Ron were discussing him in the common room.
Ivan's attention was already focused on the changes in his System stats.

Just one hour of the academic genius experience had made a significant difference. Most of the Spells Ivan knew had been upgraded to Level 1.
With the other roommates not around, Ivan used the box, stool, and pillow to test the power of the Levitation Charm and Disarming Charm.
"Wingardium Leviosa~"
"Expelliarmus~"
After a few minutes of playful experimentation, Ivan looked at the pillow that had been blasted from the head of the bed to the foot by the Disarming Charm, and the box and stool that were slowly descending from the air, feeling a great sense of accomplishment.
This was the power of magic!
Few could resist the allure of such mysterious and supernatural abilities, especially Ivan, who had loved reading various magical and fantasy books while lying in his hospital bed, terminally ill in his previous life.
Unfortunately, during the first few days after his arrival, Ivan had been unable to cast even the most basic Spells due to various limitations. Now, after casting several Spells in quick succession, he was naturally very excited.
He wanted to cast a Transfiguration Spell and Levitation Charm on everything he saw.
After about ten minutes of experimentation, Ivan's mind began to feel foggy, a clear sign of Magical Exhaustion.
Through frequent Spellcasting, Ivan had a rough understanding of his limits.
First, the Levitation Charm. Ivan could keep an empty box suspended about a meter in the air for nearly forty seconds, or levitate his bed for five seconds, though the height was only about thirty centimeters.
Second, the Transfiguration Spell. He could change the form and even the nature of an object into something else for a period of time.
This was the Spell Ivan was most interested in. Practicing it deeply, he could even transform inanimate objects into living animals, just like Professor Mcgonagall.
However, he wondered if this Transfiguration Spell could be used on Wizards. For example, during a battle, could he cast a Transfiguration Spell to turn an enemy into a tree, a brick, or an animal like a pig, cow, or sheep?
Or, could he transform the obstacles in front of or behind an enemy into fierce beasts or traps, achieving the effect of defeating the enemy in one strike?
But Ivan frowned as he thought about it. Recalling the original story, he realized that few people seemed to do this.
Even Professor Mcgonagall, who was proficient in Transfiguration Spells, did not use them on enemy Wizards during the final battle.
Was it because ordinary Transfiguration Spells could not be used on living beings? But Transfiguration Spells were powerful enough to transform non-living things into living beings, so there was no reason they couldn't reverse the process.
Hagrid used a Spell to give Dudley, the fat bully who bullied Harry, a pig's tail. Draco also had a dark history of being transformed into a Weasel, indicating that Transfiguration Spells could directly affect the human body.
Was it due to the influence of magic? Did Wizards have a certain resistance to Transfiguration Spells, with stronger Wizards having more resistance?
What, then, was magic? Why could Wizards perform such incredible feats?
Ivan thought of the only transformation that could affect powerful Wizards: the Animagus transformation. Even this incredibly difficult and powerful magic could only transform a Wizard into a specific animal, not any form they desired.
This transformation seemed more like a fixed Transfiguration Spell, allowing Wizards to switch between two forms without flaws or time limits.
"Forget it, why am I thinking about this now?" Ivan lightly rubbed his forehead. He was just a first-year Wizard, and his Spells were only at the level where he could cast them.
Thinking too much about it was pointless.
After experimenting with the Levitation Charm, Transfiguration Spell, Lumos, and Disarming Charm, Ivan had a rough estimate of his own strength.
He was probably at the level of a relatively strong first-year Wizard.
After testing the effects of ordinary Spells, Ivan turned his attention to the Fear Curse, a Dark Magic Spell that had appeared in his System after he was transported to Hogwarts. He had never used it before.
"Fear be upon you!" Ivan recalled the sequence of casting a Spell, waving his Wand and pointing it at Maka's head.
"Cluck~" A faint purple light flashed, and Maka tilted her head, looking at Ivan with an innocent expression.
"It didn't work?" Ivan looked at Maka, who showed no reaction, and felt a bit puzzled.
"Fear be upon you~ Fear be upon you~"
Ivan cast the Spell again, and the purple light enveloped Maka. But Maka thought Ivan was playing with her and began to peck at the tip of his Wand with her curved beak, tugging at it.
Ivan reluctantly put his Wand away, or Maka would have chewed it to pieces. He then looked at the Fear Curse in his System's magic section, feeling frustrated.
In theory, he should have been able to cast it normally after reaching level one.
Or was it...
Ivan suddenly remembered the memories that surged into his mind when the Sorting Hat invaded his brain.
"Fear" Ivan closed his eyes for a moment, then opened them to see the grayish-black rat dozing on Ron's table. After a brief thought, Ivan decided to leave Maka, his messenger owl, alone and walked over with his Wand.
At this moment, Scabbers was sleeping soundly, with bits of Bertie Bott's Every-Flavour Beans still in the corner of his mouth. His small paws, divided into four fingers, occasionally scratched the table unconsciously, as if he was having a pleasant dream.
