Chapter 899: The Creation and Improvement of Wands
Chapter 899: The Creation and Improvement of Wands
A week later, in the Alchemy Room of Grand Manor, Ivan tossed aside a severely damaged wand wood and said, "Hermione, could you bring me an ebony rod? ... And the potion over there should be done by now ..."
Hermione, who had been sitting nearby reading a book, nodded and immediately got up to fetch the materials, handing them to Ivan with practiced efficiency.
Ivan focused intently as he held the carving knife, carefully engraving and grooving the wand wood. He then placed it into the prepared active solution for soaking before moving on to the next batch of materials.
Half an hour later, Ivan took out the treated wand wood and casually plucked a strand of hair, carefully inserting it into the wand. He then cut his finger and used his blood to fill the grooves, finally using a Transfiguration Spell to close the gap.
After completing all these steps, Ivan couldn't help but let out a sigh of relief. Making a wand was a highly complex process, especially the fusion of the wand wood and the wand core. Any mistake could lead to a complete failure.
Unlike ordinary items, once a Magic Item was damaged, it couldn't be fixed with a simple Reparo spell. Unless one possessed a Deathly Hallow like the Elder Wand, which could amplify magical power, the only option was to start over and make a new wand.
Perhaps due to his lack of experience and the complexity of his powers, Ivan had failed over ten times in the past week.
Some of the failures were due to mistakes during the creation process, while others were because the selected wand wood and wand core were incompatible, rendering the wands unusable.
Fortunately, the wand in front of him seemed to be free of those issues.
Ivan picked it up and pointed it at a distant Practice Dummy, giving it a vigorous wave.
"Diffindo!"
A blinding spell beam shot out from the tip of the wand, striking the Wooden Dummy and instantly reducing it to pieces.
The impressive power left Ivan quite satisfied. He had almost achieved the effects of a typical Explosion Charm with Diffindo, and this enhancement surpassed his original Unicorn Horn Wand. However, when he glanced at the item list in the System, his brow furrowed again.
[Magic Item: Unstable Wand (Ebony, Wizard's Hair, 12.25 inches long)
Magic: Strong
Runic Circuit: Power Amplification (Enhances the power of spells to a certain extent)
Compatibility: 100%
Description: This is an experimental creation by Alchemical Master Ivan Hals. While it grants significant power, it also drastically reduces the wand's stability. No one knows when it might decide to malfunction, perhaps during the next casting?]
Unfortunately... Ivan shook his head in disappointment as he read the System description. No matter how powerful an unstable wand might be, it was unusable in high-intensity battles where even the slightest mistake could turn the tide.
However, this at least proved that his approach was correct. His body tissues could indeed replace magical materials to enhance the power of a wand. The issue was that the hair, after being treated with blood, was too strong, and almost no wood could perfectly contain its power.
Before using ebony, Ivan had already tried over a dozen different types of wood... even the most mysterious elder wood became unstable when combined with blood and hair as the wand core.
Another point that Ivan found strange was that this newly crafted wand was clearly much more powerful than the previous Unicorn Wand, yet the System's Magic evaluation had not changed at all, remaining at "powerful" without advancing to the next level.
Where exactly was the boundary between these two evaluations?
Ivan stroked his chin, deep in thought. Over the past few years, he had personally crafted a significant number of magic items, but only one had been rated as "extremely powerful" by the System—the Philosopher's Stone!
However, the Philosopher's Stone was definitely not a suitable point of comparison. After all, its creation had utilized the magic accumulated over a thousand years at Hogwarts, and its core material was an incredibly valuable Mana Stone. Such favorable conditions were no longer available.
As Ivan was lost in thought, Hermione, who was standing nearby, curiously asked, "Did the wand-making succeed, Ivan?"
"Not really, I just gained some experience", Ivan replied, snapping back to reality. He placed the wand aside and smiled. Crafting a wand that could rival the Deathly Hallows was indeed not an easy task. Ivan was even considering whether he should find some time to consult with Wandmaker Ollivander.
After a busy morning, Ivan finally managed to produce a finished product. He had no intention of continuing immediately, as balancing work and rest was crucial.
"By the way, Hermione, have you finished the books I gave you?" Ivan's gaze swept over the few Alchemy Books on the table, and he suddenly remembered this.
"Not yet, it's not that quick..." the young witch sighed, looking a bit dejected. Alchemy was far more profound than she had imagined. Although Ivan would explain things to her in his spare time, there were simply too many difficult concepts.
Ivan frowned, feeling guilty. He then slapped his forehead, turned around, and started rummaging through a drawer. "My fault, I forgot to give you something."
Hermione was puzzled, but then she saw Ivan pull out a beautiful crown and walk over to her.
"Is this Ravenclaw's Diadem?" Hermione asked in surprise.
"Of course, haven't you seen it before?" Ivan teased, placing the crown directly on Hermione's head, flattening her fluffy brown hair.
The cold metal touching her forehead made the young witch feel a bit uncomfortable at first, but then she suddenly felt her mind become incredibly clear, and many problems that had puzzled her before were now easily solved.
"Wow, I feel like I've gotten smarter..." Hermione covered the crown on her head, her voice tinged with a mix of surprise and cuteness.
"You haven't forgotten the legend of Ravenclaw's Diadem, have you?" Ivan said with a smile.
"Enhance Wisdom?!" Hermione paused, immediately realizing the significance, but then quickly asked, "But Ron wore it a few days ago, didn't he?"
"Ron's luck wasn't very good that day. I hadn't found the spell to activate it yet", Ivan shrugged, answering casually.
Ravenclaw's Diadem was not bound to him and could be used by anyone. He didn't need it for his experiments, so it would have been a waste to just let it sit around. It was perfect for Hermione to use while learning Alchemy.
