Chapter 898: The Idea for a New Wand
Chapter 898: The Idea for a New Wand
The next morning, Ivan washed up and headed straight to the living room as usual. As he entered, he saw the Grangers already seated at the dining table.
Winky and Dobby were carrying trays, placing bowls of sausages, toast, and grilled tomatoes on the table. However, everyone's plates were still empty, with cutlery neatly laid out beside them, waiting for him.
"Are you settling in well?" Ivan pulled out a chair and sat down, then looked at the group and asked.
"Of course, thanks to you, it's my first time staying in such a large house..." Will Granger joked.
Mrs. Granger also nodded. Although they had only spent one night there, the opulence of the mansion far exceeded her expectations. On her way downstairs, she even saw a private swimming pool...
"Alright, you can chat later. Let's eat first..." Hermione picked up her cutlery and urged them.
"You don't have to wait for me. Help yourselves." Ivan smiled and took a sandwich, starting to eat.
Will Granger didn't immediately start eating. Instead, he observed Ivan for a moment, ensuring there were no noble dining etiquette rules, before relaxing and digging in.
While eating, Will Granger, like a curious child, asked about the animated stone statues from last night and how the House-Elves could appear with a "pop"...
Ivan initially answered each question patiently, but as the questions kept coming, most of them being basic, he eventually resorted to a vague response, attributing it all to the magic.
Hermione felt embarrassed by her father's lack of knowledge and quickly took over, answering his numerous questions for Ivan.
After finishing breakfast, Winky and Dobby promptly appeared to clear the table. Mrs. Granger, seeing this, stood up and tried to help, as she would at home. However, as soon as she picked up a fork, the two House-Elves let out loud screams. Winky dropped the dishes she was holding, shattering them into several pieces.
Mrs. Granger was startled by the House-Elves' reaction, feeling unsure and wondering if she had done something wrong.
"Enough!" Ivan sighed and stopped Winky and Dobby's cries. He then waved his wand, using Reparo to repair the broken dishes. He then turned to the bewildered Mrs. Granger and explained, "House-Elves consider household chores their most important duty. They find it shameful for others to interfere..."
"Wizards use this mindset to turn House-Elves into slaves..." Hermione huffed, her tone tinged with dissatisfaction.
Ivan pretended not to hear and silently urged Winky and Dobby to leave quickly, fearing that the young witch might bring up the House-Elf Liberation Front again...
Will and his wife were surprised by the House-Elves' pathological servitude but didn't say much. After all, it was Ivan's household matter, and they weren't familiar with the laws of the wizarding world.
"Is there anything we can help with, Hals?" Will Granger paused and asked.
They would likely be staying in this large estate for several months. If they didn't do something, he felt uneasy.
"No, thank you. If anything, it's me who has involved you all in this. Consider your stay here as my apology." Ivan shook his head. Dobby and Winky would handle all the household chores, and what he had to do was beyond the help of two Muggles.
The Granger family had probably come to terms with this, accepting their identity as freeloaders with a mix of frustration and resignation.
Hermione, on the other hand, volunteered to serve as Ivan’s assistant during this period.
Considering that this would help the three of them settle in more comfortably, Ivan readily agreed and led the young witches to the Alchemy Room on the fourth floor.
Although the entire manor had not yet been completely renovated due to time constraints, the Alchemy Room and the Training Ground were exceptions, having been prioritized for construction.
In recent days, Ivan had also taken the time to move all the books from Knockturn Alley to the manor.
"Are you planning to study wands, Ivan?" Hermione asked as she entered the Alchemy Room, eyeing the Compendium of Wand Materials on the table.
"Something like that, I intend to craft a new wand!" Ivan replied with ease.
"What about your old one? Did it break?" Hermione asked in surprise.
Ivan shook his head and drew out his perfectly intact Unicorn Wand from the sleeve of his wizard robes, explaining, "It’s not damaged, just too weak. You see, Grindelwald has the most powerful wand in the entire wizarding world. If I want to stand a chance against him, I need a wand that can match it!"
Ivan gently stroked the wand that had been his companion for five years, feeling a bit nostalgic.
Back when he was a first-year, he had always wanted to swap for a more compatible wand due to issues with compatibility. Little did he know that he would later fuse with a Unicorn bloodline, resolving the compatibility problem and allowing him to keep and even enhance this wand.
However, due to limitations in materials, the wand had already been pushed to its limits. When casting powerful spells, it would sometimes heat up and tremble, clearly struggling to handle the immense magical power. It was time for it to step down to a secondary role.
The process of making a wand, however, proved to be far more complex than Ivan had imagined. There were hundreds, if not thousands, of combinations of wand cores and wand woods, each requiring careful consideration of material compatibility with the wandmaker.
On top of that, creating a wand that could rival the Deathly Hallows was nothing short of a pipe dream!
Don’t be fooled by the Elder Wand, which is made from elder wood and Thestral tail hair. Ivan was certain that even if he used these materials, he couldn’t come close to matching the Elder Wand’s power. Many wandmakers had tried and failed, producing wands that offered only a slight boost in the potency of dark magic.
Fortunately, Fleur’s wand from the Triwizard Cup last year had given Ivan significant insight. If a strand of Veela hair could serve as a wand core, what about his own unique properties?
While he wasn’t a pure magical creature, the power in his blood and bones, after multiple bloodline fusion rituals, was far stronger than the likes of dragon heartstrings or phoenix feathers.
