Chapter 885: The Aggressive International Confederation of Wizards
Chapter 885: The Aggressive International Confederation of Wizards
"This is Director Cornell from the North American Magic Congress!" Pierce pointed to a lean and efficient-looking male wizard and introduced him.
"Hello, Headsir!" Ivan extended his hand and lightly shook Cornell's.
"I've heard of you, Hals!" A smile appeared on Cornell's face, but his gaze was filled with scrutiny as he looked at Ivan. "The newspapers say you're the most talented wizard in Britain and Dumbledore's star pupil?"
"Headmaster Dumbledore is always willing to help students who seek his assistance... I was merely fortunate enough to receive some guidance from him", Ivan responded ambiguously. He wasn't about to reveal too much about his relationship with Dumbledore until he knew Cornell's true intentions.
"Director Cornell, may I ask what brings you to me in such a hurry?" Ivan added.
"Hals, can you tell me where you were on the day Grindelwald escaped from prison?" Cornell's smile vanished as he looked at Ivan and asked.
"Of course, I was at Hogwarts..." Ivan replied without hesitation.
"Don't try to lie to me!" Cornell cut him off before Ivan could finish, his face darkening. "According to our information, Grindelwald attacked Hogwarts when you weren't in the castle. Someone saw you arrive half an hour after the incident."
"Furthermore, after receiving Minister Pierce's letter, the International Confederation of Wizards immediately dispatched Aurors to investigate. According to their report, three casting traces were found near Nurmengard", Cornell said, emphasizing each word.
This doesn't prove anything... Ivan instinctively wanted to refute the claim, but he stopped himself after using Legilimency to glimpse some of Cornell's memories.
The Aurors sent by the International Confederation of Wizards to Nurmengard possessed a unique magic that could reconstruct magic images from the residual traces left on the battlefield.
However, due to the delay in Pierce's notification, many of the magic traces at Nurmengard had already dissipated. As a result, the International Confederation of Wizards only had partial evidence, confirming that Ivan had been there.
Realizing this, Ivan changed his tone and admitted directly, "Alright, Director Cornell, as you said, I wasn't at Hogwarts at the time. I was at Nurmengard..."
Cornell was somewhat surprised by Ivan's sudden cooperation but didn't dwell on it. "What were you doing at Nurmengard at that time?"
"I received a report from the house-elf Winky. It told me that Voldemort had gone there and was fighting Grindelwald", Ivan explained patiently.
"House-elf? Why would it know that?" Cornell pressed on relentlessly.
"Nurmengard has been abandoned for many years, and Grindelwald was the only prisoner there. Without the care of a house-elf, he would have died long ago. Surely Director Cornell understands this?" Ivan was growing increasingly irritated by the continuous questioning and responded with a touch of sarcasm.
Cornell paid no mind to Ivan's barbed words and spoke slowly. "I'm just curious, why did that House-Elf specifically choose to tell you this news? Also, since you knew Grindelwald was facing off against Voldemort, why did you dare to go to Nurmengard?"
"Cut to the chase, Director Cornell, what exactly do you want to ask?" Ivan's face turned cold.
"Did you release Grindelwald?" Cornell pressed.
"Why would I do that? There's no benefit for me in letting him out!" Ivan sneered.
"That's not necessarily true. Over fifty years ago, many talented Wizards like you were swayed by Grindelwald's words... especially when you needed something from him... I heard that Grindelwald killed the Dark Lord Voldemort, who was infamous in Britain. Did you make some sort of deal with him?" Cornell stared intently at Ivan, trying to read his reaction.
In Cornell's mind, Grindelwald had been imprisoned for decades and could not have escaped Nurmengard's tower on his own. Therefore, someone must have helped him, and the young Wizard standing before him was their prime suspect, given his presence at Nurmengard that day.
However, to Cornell's surprise, Ivan did not show any signs of panic or fear under his relentless questioning. Instead, his calmness was almost unsettling.
Cornell felt a chill, but he quickly suppressed it. There was no reason for him to fear a sixteen or seventeen-year-old young Wizard.
With that thought, Cornell resumed his threats. "Considering your age, I can be lenient. If you cooperate with our investigation, the International Confederation of Wizards won't make things difficult for you!
But if you don't plan to tell the truth... the newly renovated Nurmengard might just gain another prisoner!"
Cornell's threatening words made Pierce's heart race. He quietly moved away from the group, not wanting to be caught in the crossfire of any sudden Cruciatus Curses or Killing Curses—they couldn't dare to speak to this demon like that...
"Grindelwald's escape has nothing to do with me, and I can answer your questions!" Ivan's tone grew heavier, his patience reaching its limit.
"That's because I'm the only one in all of Hogwarts who could walk away unscathed from a confrontation with both Grindelwald and Voldemort. Those House-Elves know this, so they wouldn't go to anyone else..."
Cornell found Ivan's words amusing, and the Aurors from the North American Congress couldn't help but laugh.
"I read yesterday's newspaper and admit you have talent, Hals, but Grindelwald's power is far beyond what you can imagine..." Cornell's laughter quickly turned to a serious expression.
He had become the Head of the North American Magic Investigation Bureau at the age of thirty, a testament to his own genius. Although he hadn't received the same early recognition and achievements as Ivan, such as graduating early with the favor of important figures and outshining several lenient Aurors in exams, he had still earned the highest honors with all O (Outstanding) grades.
So Cornell knew that, despite any talent, age, energy, and combat experience would limit one to the level of an elite Auror at best. The exaggerated claims in the Daily Prophet were likely to be taken with a grain of salt...
