Chapter 881: The First Day's Pay
Chapter 881: The First Day's Pay
Seeing the astonished looks on Figeus and Brandon's faces, the two Skrulls couldn't help but flash a slight, derisive smile.
What a bunch of hicks, they thought. They've never seen anything like this!
However, the smile vanished as quickly as it appeared, hidden away.
The small spacecraft belonged to the mining company's CEO, so it didn't have to queue up like regular shuttles at the public entry gates.
The ship bypassed the public route and entered a private channel, taking just over ten minutes to reach the base's interior and park in a small hangar.
As they disembarked, a neatly dressed middle-aged male Skrull greeted them. He was the CEO's secretary.
Seeing Brandon, he hurried over. "You've finally arrived, Lord Brandon! The boss is waiting for you in the reception room!"
The secretary knew Brandon's identity.
Brandon was now a favorite of Emperor Plaunt, and they couldn't afford to be lax.
"Uh, well..." Brandon hesitated for a moment.
To be honest, he wanted to get straight to filming the promotional video and didn't feel like dealing with these formalities.
But the boss was the local snake, and it would be hard to refuse his hospitality.
"Very well, I'll go see President Kohnar," Brandon nodded.
However, he quickly added, "My assistant won't be joining me. Please arrange a suitable place for him to wait. We have important matters to attend to later."
"Understood!" the secretary immediately replied, instructing his staff to treat Figeus well.
...
Brandon followed the secretary away.
Figeus was led by the secretary's staff to a small reception room within the base, where he was treated warmly.
However, Figeus didn't understand Skrull, and the food brought by the staff didn't suit his taste, making the atmosphere quite awkward.
An hour later, the reception room's door opened once more.
"Are you Figeus? Lord Brandon has asked us to bring you to him," two Skrulls in white uniforms showed their IDs to the staff and spoke to Figeus.
Figeus didn't understand what they were saying.
But he could clearly hear the word "Brandon" in their language and figured out the situation from that.
Figeus nodded and followed them out of the reception room.
...
The two Skrulls led Figeus through the main base, turning and twisting through various corridors and changing several modes of transportation.
Finally, they arrived at a very spacious and bright control room.
The control room was enormous, almost as large as a standard soccer field.
Rows of control panels filled the room.
Skrulls in earthy brown uniforms sat at the panels, fully focused, their fingers deftly navigating the interfaces.
"Figeus, over here!"
Before Figeus could take in the entire control room, he heard Brandon's voice from the side.
He didn't dare delay and quickly made his way to Brandon's location.
As Brandon greeted Figeus, he stood at a control panel, his fingers moving with interest over the interface.
When Figeus reached his side, before he could even speak, Brandon patted his shoulder reassuringly. "Figeus, this is what I've arranged for you. This will be your workstation for the next three years!"
"???" Figeus was taken aback.
This was his workstation?
He was to work here?
This was completely unexpected.
Last night, he had listened to many of his companions talk about the profession of "Planetary Miner." These miners had to delve deep into the underground caverns of Bonar, wearing cumbersome mechs, which was incredibly exhausting.
But now, his job was actually just sitting in the headquarters and moving his fingers around the control panel? What a dream job!
Figeus hadn't fully come to terms with this when Brandon already had his arm around his shoulders, enthusiastically dragging him to the front of the control console.
"Look, this is the 'Mining Control Console.' It's used to operate fully automated heavy machinery to dig deep underground."
"The red blocks on the screen are valuable ores, the yellow blocks are worthless common rocks, and the black, slowly moving parts are the detection devices of the mining equipment..."
Brandon gave a quick rundown of what he knew, then called in a specialized Skrull instructor to teach Figeus how to use the console in translated English.
Brandon stood aside, filming the entire teaching process.
...
Figeus learned with great dedication.
He knew this was his only chance.
There were no other Blue Star apprentices around him; he was the only one.
If he learned well and mastered the skills, he might be kept at the headquarters by the Skrulls.
But if he didn't learn well, he feared he would be sent to the front lines to dig in the mines after Brandon finished filming him!
Clearly, working at headquarters was a hundred times better than being sent to the front lines, so he had to be extra diligent!
...
With Figeus's serious and focused learning, the whole day flew by quickly.
Through his studies, he found that the control console was quite easy to get the hang of.
With just half a day of instruction from his teacher, Figeus was already able to operate it smoothly, even earning continuous praise from his instructor.
As for Brandon:
Brandon left the main control room at 11 a.m., apparently to attend to some business.
However, the camera he had set up remained on, continuously recording Figeus's every move.
At 5 p.m., Brandon returned to the main control room.
Hearing the instructor's praise, Brandon patted Figeus's shoulder with a satisfied smile. "Good job, buddy!
"Now you can clock out. Go to the logistics department to report in. They will arrange your accommodation."
"Huh? That's it for the day?" Figeus was a bit reluctant to leave.
To be honest, operating the control console was quite addictive, like playing a game, and he hadn't had enough yet.
However, just as he was about to say goodbye to Brandon and head to the "logistics department," Brandon suddenly called him back. "Wait, Figeus."
"Sir Brandon, is there anything else?"
"Here's the thing: your pay for today. Since you haven't set up a bank account yet, I'll give you cash."
Brandon counted out a few bills and placed them in Figeus's palm. "This is 1000 Solar Coins, your pay for the first day. By the way, everyone here is paid daily."
"Thank you, Sir Brandon!" Figeus said happily.
His instructor added from the side, "Sir Brandon is right. As a new recruit, your pay is low. After a year or two, once you get more experienced, your pay will increase by about a third. Judging by your performance today, that won't be a problem. Keep up the good work!"
"Thank you, Master! I will definitely work hard!" Figeus promised immediately.
