Chapter 88: The Power of the Heavy Blade
Chapter 88: The Power of the Heavy Blade
Inside the hilltop fort, Fang Dawei and his group of thirteen people were either sitting or lying down. Aside from the doctor, who needed protection, nine of them still had the ability to fight. The remaining three were severely injured, lying there with little consciousness.
Initially, they had sixteen people, but the missing ones were either scattered or killed along the way.
Fang Dawei had fair skin and wore a white shirt with his sleeves rolled up. His hair was parted, and he wore glasses, giving him a clean-cut appearance despite his robust build.
However, his exposed skin was covered in a scaly membrane that extended to his face.
Sitting not far from him was Tong Baotao, a tall and sturdy man. His torn clothing revealed a grayish-black shell armor with bullet graze marks. A bulge on his scapular region suggested something hidden beneath, but it was concealed by his clothing, making it unclear what it was.
In front of them was a small radio, and a short man wearing headphones crouched, listening to the signals. He continuously wrote down codes, and after finishing his record, he quickly removed his headphones and grabbed a booklet. He translated the codes, then finally looked up and said, "It's out."
"What did they say?" Everyone looked concerned.
The short man replied, "They're asking us to hold on a little longer. Mulan Corporation's security team is on its way, and they'll be here in about forty minutes. By then, we'll at least have a chance to survive. Mulan Corporation won't let us die."
"Mulan Corporation, damn it!"
Hatred flashed in Tong Baotao's eyes. Their current situation was closely tied to Mulan Corporation, but he also knew that only Mulan Corporation could save them now.
Fang Dawei remained calm and said, "Actually, we do have a chance. The Resistance Organization provided us with so many things; they didn't do it out of kindness. They must be planning something in the city."
"Once chaos erupts in the city, will those Grayhounds still stay here? That's when we'll have an opportunity. The Mulan Corporation's path is just our last resort. If we can avoid it, we won't take it."
"Big Brother is right!"
The bandits were encouraged by his words, which made perfect sense. The city was where the Patrol Bureau should focus its efforts. If trouble broke out in the city, the Grayhounds outside the city wouldn't have time to worry about this place.
At that moment, a rustling sound came from above, and a person climbed over the wall. He stuck to the wall like a spider, and his limbs moved like those of an arthropod.
Fang Dawei looked up and saw sunlight streaming through a massive hole above, causing him to squint. "Old Seven, I told you not to crawl around on my head," he said.
Old Seven responded with an 'oh' and quickly descended the wall like a spider. He crouched on the ground and said, "Big Brother, I've checked it all. There's a secret passage below, probably dug by the villagers. Should I block it?"
Fang Dawei paused and said, "No, leave it. Let a brother keep an eye on it; we might need it later."
He turned to the doctor examining the injured bandits and said, "Dr. Lin, can they be saved?"
Dr. Lin, a middle-aged man in his forties with white hair, was wearing a stethoscope and checking several bandits lying there. He said, "The medicine provided by the Resistance Organization can keep them alive, but don't expect miracles. Even if we go to a proper hospital, they won't recover anytime soon."
After a pause, he added, "As long as they don't die now, it's fine. The severed parts will be fine too. Once we get to Mulan Corporation, they'll replace them with better ones."
As Dr. Lin mentioned this, Fang Dawei's face twitched, recalling something unpleasant.
Suddenly, his pupils dilated, and blue veins appeared on his face and forehead. Bloodshot eyes and rapid breathing ensued, and he began scratching himself. The scaly layer on his body seemed to harden.
Tong Baotao, seeing his condition, exclaimed, "Not good! The boss is having a seizure! Quick, Dr. Lin, the Clarity Capsule!"
Dr. Lin, swift in his actions, opened a pillbox and took out a capsule, tossing it over.
Tong Baotao caught it and quickly approached Fang Dawei. "Here, boss," he said, holding his body. Fang Dawei grabbed it and quickly stuffed it into his mouth, swallowing it with effort. After a while, his breathing gradually calmed down, and the abnormalities on his body gradually disappeared.
Dr. Lin glanced at him and then looked around. "One capsule can last for three days, but that's without intense physical activity. If you engage in combat using your implants, you might need one every half a day. These pills will only last you three days."
Tong Baotao grumbled, "Damn it, we should've taken the medicine before pressing the detonator."
A younger gang member said, "Brother Tong, the kid isn't with us anymore. We'd be exposed as soon as we meet them. It's better to take out a few more of the Commission Company's men. Those Grayhounds only know how to use guns, so they're less of a threat to us."
Tong Baotao glared at him, "That's true, but how many did you take out in the end?"
"The younger brother seemed a little embarrassed. It wasn't as if he was in a rush to leave, but when he saw that it was almost time, he pressed the button. Besides, those people suddenly retreated, so it's not his fault."
At this moment, Tong Qianjiang, who was sitting in the upper part of the fort, stood up with a start. He looked down, then turned back and said, "Big Brother, Brother Fang, there seems to be some movement below!"
"What are those Grayhounds up to now?"
The group immediately became alert, and one by one, they gathered at the broken opening and the original gap, looking down. They saw that all the patrol officers below were holding their weapons upwards, and among them was a young man in a student uniform holding a longsword. His clear and cold gaze was looking up.
"Big Brother, that seems to be a Wu University cadet."
Tong Qianjiang said, "I've seen him before. Yes, it was that night when I went to trade with Brother Tian Yaozu's younger brother. I felt something was off, so I left early."
Tong Baotao looked and exclaimed in surprise, "Am I seeing this right? Just one person?" He turned to look at everyone and shouted, "Just one person? Huh? Are they all scared off by a single person? They sent a kid?"
The bandits inside the fort all burst into arrogant laughter. It wasn't that they looked down on the Wu University cadet, but there was only one person, and he only had a sword. What could he possibly do to them?
But just then, everyone suddenly felt a flash before their eyes, and the young man disappeared from his original spot. Only Spider Old Seven, with his spider-like reflexes, caught his movement and said, "He's coming up! So fast!"
At that moment, the sound of intense gunfire erupted from below, and a barrage of bullets hit the fort above, forcing them to duck back inside.
They had tried exchanging fire with the Patrol Bureau before, but later realized they were at a disadvantage. From a distance, their aim was off, and there were so many Patrol Bureau officers that even if they took down a few, it was useless. The more they fired, the fewer bullets they had, so they decided to take cover inside the fort, which still had some protective capabilities, and not move unless someone charged up.
The Patrol Bureau also knew they couldn't breach the fort's defenses, so they had been quiet for a while. But now, they suddenly opened fire, clearly coordinating with the young man.
After taking the medication, Fang Dawei sat there, seemingly recovering. He took a few deep breaths, and the scales on his body seemed to relax as well. He lifted his head and said, "Old Four, keep watch."
A burly man drew a pistol and silently stood up, then walked outside.
Wearing a headgear that left only a slit for his eyes, he walked out of the fort onto a relatively spacious platform. He took a few more steps outside, aiming his gun at the figure below.
At this moment, bullets from below also started flying towards him. However, whether they hit his torso or limbs, they all ricocheted away without any effect. One bullet hit his forehead, causing him to tilt his head down, tearing a slit in his headgear and revealing the dark shell underneath.
Chen Chuan fixed his gaze from below, looking up at the fort. There was a straight-line distance of about a hundred meters from below to the top of the fort, but there were three narrower bends along the way.
This meant that even if the person charging up was extremely fast, they would still have to slow down at the bends, exposing their sides to the gunmen guarding the fort for a certain distance.
But as he went around the bends, his speed remained unchanged. In the instant he reached the spot, he stomped his foot heavily, creating a deep footprint in the ground, and then he quickly sidestepped to the other end.
Due to his incredible speed, the burly man couldn't aim accurately at his figure. Despite firing continuously, all the bullets landed behind him.
After Chen Chuan passed the second bend, the burly man drew another pistol from his waist, holding both guns and aiming at the last bend. The two guns were slightly apart, covering both the front and back, ensuring that Chen Chuan couldn't dodge the rain of bullets if he came through from below.
Just before reaching the third bend, Chen Chuan made an unexpected move. Instead of continuing forward, he suddenly twisted his body mid-stride, stomped hard, and leaped into the air, jumping over the wide five to six-meter-deep ravine in one go. He landed on the final straight path, and as he lifted his head, the burly man was right in front of him.
The burly man reacted swiftly, immediately bringing the outward-facing pistol back in, aiming at Chen Chuan and firing. After Chen Chuan landed, he crouched low, then suddenly charged forward. During this process, he even managed to sway his body left and right, causing the bullets to hit the mud behind him, spraying it everywhere.
His speed was astonishing. In the blink of an eye, he covered the nearly ten-meter distance. Then, with a diagonal upward slash of his longsword, a severed arm flew into the air. He took a sidestep to the side, and as he brushed past the burly man, the sword followed through with a horizontal slash!
With a 'clack', a deep footprint appeared beneath his feet, and his body abruptly came to a halt. He lifted his head, and five steps ahead was the entrance to the fort.
He shook his wrist, causing the blade to vibrate, and slowly walked towards the entrance.
Behind him, the burly man stood for a moment, then his upper body, which had been severed, fell to the ground, followed by his lower body, which was dragged down as well.
In that moment, the implanted armor, modified skeleton, and protective vest were all sliced in half by his single strike!
