Chapter 878: Everyone Wins
Chapter 878: Everyone Wins
"Mother!!"
Edward Weibull, surrounded and beaten, saw Miss Bakin’s death and let out a pained roar. His eyes turned completely crimson. With a full-body shudder, he released the nitoryu, fists slamming into the ground. The tremendous strength unleashed a shockwave, momentarily halting the Navy’s assault.
But quickly, a wispy afterimage descended from the sky. Dalmatian’s feet struck like spears, piercing Edward Weibull’s lumbar spine.
"Dalmatian!"
"Lost his senses, so lost his Observation Haki too. Don’t fear him—keep attacking!" Dalmatian ordered.
"Mother..."
Blood dripped from Edward Weibull’s mouth. Already injured, his rage had left his Armament Haki unguarded, allowing Dalmatian’s strike to damage his spine. Normally, he could fight on—this wound was minor for his physical prowess, not crippling his combat power.
But now, he’d lost his will to battle.
Miss Bakin was his mother, real or not. In Edward Weibull’s heart, she was family. With a loved one dead, what battle intent remained?
It mirrored Zeff’s past—family dead, trainees he’d cherished dead, all at pirates’ hands. Decades in the Navy, yet pirates still thrived, leaving only helplessness. Their situations weren’t so different.
Kuro, though not intentionally killing Miss Bakin, had prioritized targets by threat level. Yet Edward Weibull’s despair mirrored Zeff’s old pain.
Kuro bit his cigar, exhaling a sigh-like puff of smoke. Gripping Autumn Water’s wrist, he twisted. A phantom image rippled as he appeared before Edward Weibull.
"Shinmeiryu Style—Ultimate Mystic Art!"
Kuro’s two fingers traced the blade. The sky darkened, and a golden lightning bolt—like a dragon—encased the sword in radiant light, cleaving downward.
"Ultimate Mystic Art!"
The full version far surpassed Kuro’s instant cast. His movements weren’t physical—they were aura and swordsmanship concentrated, prepared through chanting before erupting as a complete technique. The instant cast, his recent innovation, prioritized speed at the cost of power.
Hiss!
Golden light flashed. Kuro sheathed his sword without glancing at Edward Weibull, darting toward the port.
Edward Weibull’s body stiffened. A golden thread split his forehead, extending to his chin. The line widened, revealing red. No gash, no blood—just his head tilting sideways, lifeless.
This halted the nearby Navy.
All here had trained under Zeff. They knew death when they saw it.
No corpse meant no fight.
"Why?! Vice Admiral!"
Ai En rushed over, shouting, "He deserved more suffering!"
She hadn’t used her ability yet. Alone, she couldn’t overpower Edward Weibull—his Haki would block her, his body resist her strength. But in a group battle, she could exploit openings to erase him.
Yet she wanted Edward Weibull to suffer as Zeff once had. That’s why she’d used the pistol.
"Enough."
Kuro shook his head. "He was just a fool—a misguided one. This is enough. We’re not pirates; we don’t descend to their cruelty. But we’re human too—we take revenge. Yet revenge doesn’t mean becoming despicable. We’re Navy. We have our pride."
He turned to Ai En. "If Zeff-teacher were alive, he wouldn’t want you like this, Ai En."
Mention of Zeff unraveled Ai En’s composure. She revered Zeff like a father.
Her lips trembled before she lowered her head.
"Carrying the past won’t bring happiness. You stayed silent in G-3 for too long. Clinging to past shackles won’t move you forward—it’ll drag you back." Kuro added.
He’d wanted to say this long ago but lacked the right words. After all, on the surface, she thrived—Commandership had its perks, especially in G-3’s comforts.
He couldn’t just tell her to come to his office for an "inner exploration talk." She’d assume harassment.
Kuro patted her shoulder, gazing at the Grand Line. "Think well. Remember, stagnation isn’t the Grand Line’s nature. If you don’t ride the wave before it swells, you’ll drown first."
"I understand", Ai En whispered, voice breaking. "We’ve avenged Zeff-teacher. His death is avenged!"
"Yes. It is."
Kuro walked past her to the port, watching the waves. "Bring some sherry. I know you’ve got it."
He spoke to the Navy avengers behind him.
The commanding officers smiled, nodding. Orders flew to subordinates, and soon, Navy soldiers carried wines. Each Zeff disciple took a bottle, joining Kuro in staring at the Grand Line.
Togeko murmured, "Kuro, thanks for this. We’ve exhaled our grief."
Kuro shook his head. "No thanks needed. I’m Navy too—Zeff’s teachings shaped me, even if briefly. Your words make me feel like I’m not a true disciple."
Togeko chuckled, silent. Though not a ‘traditional’ Smoker-like recruit, Kuro’s actions earned their respect. To them, he was as pure a Navy as any.
Kuro popped the sherry’s cork, tilting it toward the Grand Line.
The Navy behind mirrored him. They didn’t understand the tradition, but now, it felt right.
Half-drained, Kuro raised the bottle toward the endless sea. "Seafarers aren’t pirates’ sole title. We’re Navy too. Our fate lies in the Grand Line. So—to Zeff, and all who fell fighting pirates!"
Whoosh!
A collective gust. The Navy raised bottles, clinking with Kuro, downing the rest.
"Zeff-teacher!!"
Ai En couldn’t hold back tears. She’d restrained herself until now, but vengeance loosened her grief, and she wept.
Her sorrow cracked others too.
Memories of Zeff’s mentorship stirred—faces fell into sorrow.
Crash!
Waves surged, slamming the shore with a thunderous roar.
"The Grand Line watches", someone began. The unison rose, gripping every Navy’s soul:
"The world’s beginning!"
"The Grand Line knows!"
"The world’s end!"
Voices crescendoed as standby Navy soldiers joined, the anthem echoing across the island.
"So it invites us forward", Kuro continued.
"So it guides us to the right world!"
Kuro roared the last line, locking eyes with the Grand Line. "The Whitebeard Pirates claim to be the ‘strongest pirate crew’—they’ll chase enemies to extinction over lost comrades. But if pirates can do this... why not us Navy?"
"We’ll make the Grand Line understand—Navy isn’t to be trifled with. Kill one Navy? We’ll slaughter ten pirates! Kill a ship of Navy? We’ll turn that sea upside down!"
Bang!
Kuro shattered the bottle, teeth gritting his final warning. "Let pirates remember—wherever Navy stands, that place must be safe!"
Only when Navy stood safe, would he be safe.
Using this chance to flex power, establishing Navy’s rules—ensured none would dare threaten him.
Everyone wins.
