Chapter 878: Counterweight of the Scales
Chapter 878: Counterweight of the Scales
"But he must have believed he had a way to resolve this trouble..." Ivan murmured to himself, the only explanation for why Grindelwald chose to escape from prison rather than wait to die in Nurmengard.
A man on the verge of death wouldn't have the leisure to follow Britain and all of Europe’s newspapers every day...
Ivan recalled his previous interactions with Grindelwald, and numerous doubts resurfaced in his mind. What he found most perplexing was the so-called agreement. What exactly had Dumbledore promised him?
Ivan didn’t believe for a moment that the matter was as simple as Grindelwald had initially claimed!
A slightly more comfortable environment was hardly worth the price Grindelwald paid, taking on the Dark Magic damage in Dumbledore’s place.
Such a deal was clearly unbalanced. But what if the other side of the scale held a weight called freedom?
Ivan hadn’t forgotten that during their last meeting, Grindelwald had been almost entirely unrestricted in the tower...
Now, it seemed that there might have been some constraints before, which Dumbledore had deliberately removed to enable Grindelwald to face Voldemort. Grindelwald hadn’t left immediately because he knew Voldemort would eventually bring the Deathly Hallows to him!
With this in mind, Ivan looked at Harry and Snape, hoping to glean some clues from them, but Madam Pomfrey had already appeared beside him, her gaze sharp and piercing.
"Hals, I must remind you that you’ve been talking for ten minutes. I believe Potter and Severus need to rest!" Madam Pomfrey said sternly.
"Alright, Madam, I’ll leave now!" Ivan shrugged, not wanting to argue with her.
Snape and Harry had endured two consecutive battles, their minds and spirits pushed to their limits. They truly needed a good night’s sleep.
...
A few days passed in the blink of an eye, but the shadow of Grindelwald’s attack still loomed over Hogwarts. Young wizards discussed the incident constantly, whether in class or during breaks. Even going to the bathroom at night required a group, for fear of someone emerging from the shadows.
Furthermore, nearly a quarter of the parents had requested their children’s withdrawal or temporary leave, expressing doubts about Hogwarts’ security. According to the students’ reports, there were five professors and more than ten Aurors present, yet they failed to stop the intruder.
Pierce had to send out letters one by one, doing his best to retain the students.
However, Pierce couldn’t understand why, in recent years, similar incidents at Hogwarts had not provoked such strong reactions from parents. But he couldn’t fathom that many young wizards were writing to their parents daily, complaining to avoid the upcoming final exams.
Fortunately, the discussion about Grindelwald was soon overshadowed by another major piece of news. On the third day after the attack, the Daily Prophet published the good news of Voldemort’s defeat.
Any wizard who heard this news felt both relief and endless doubt. After all, the news came too suddenly, and Voldemort’s death was silent and without a trace of a body left behind.
The front page of the newspapers only mentioned that the Ministry of Magic’s elite Aurors had found Voldemort’s hiding place and planned a surprise attack to secretly capture him. Voldemort refused to surrender, injuring several Aurors before being killed by a combined effort, his body reduced to a pile of muck...
"The Ministry of Magic should have come up with a better story..." Ivan tossed the Prophecy journal onto the table and shook his head in exasperation.
This was the story the Aurors had spent three days wracking their brains over?
It was outrageous!
"And they didn't even mention Harry!" Ron complained indignantly.
"No! They did!" Hermione flipped over the Daily Prophet and pointed to a section. "It says here that Professor Snape was an undercover agent sent by the Ministry of Magic to the Dark Lord's side. Thanks to the intelligence he provided, the Aurors were able to discover the Dark Lord's whereabouts. Harry was responsible for luring the Dark Lord out as bait..."
"But they didn't say Harry killed the Dark Lord, did they?" Ron still couldn't let it go.
"Come on, Ron, I didn't even know what was happening that day myself", Harry said, trying to comfort him. He wasn't particularly bothered about the Ministry of Magic taking credit, as the one who truly deserved the most credit for Voldemort's death was Grindelwald.
Ivan nodded in agreement. "This matter is too complex; the Ministry of Magic is right to cover up part of the truth! Wizards in Britain need confidence now. They don't want to know that the Dark Lord was killed by another Dark Lord!"
Moreover, the information about Horcruxes must be kept secret. The idea that killing a person could split one's soul and grant immortality is too tempting for Dark Wizards.
Although the method of creating a Horcrux is not widely known, there are some records in the ancient family libraries.
"But now you can call him Voldemort openly!" Ivan suddenly said with a smile.
Hermione and Ron were taken aback for a moment, then they realized that with the Dark Lord dead, there was no reason to fear him anymore.
"Yeah, the Dark Lord... no, Voldemort isn't that big of a deal!" Ron hesitated for a moment before saying boldly.
The others, including Harry, laughed along with him...
The shadow that had loomed over their hearts began to lift with their laughter, but the good mood didn't last long. Hermione soon pulled out a stack of books and reminded them that it was time to study!
Harry and Ron's faces fell immediately, both looking like they couldn't believe they had to study again after just doing so yesterday...
"Have you memorized the standard wand movements for Transfiguration spells? Do you understand the principles behind Transfiguration spells? Who put down the Goblin Rebellion..." Hermione bombarded them with questions.
Harry and Ron were speechless, unable to answer any of Hermione's questions, but they knew these topics could all appear on the exams. In the end, they could only reluctantly pick up their books and start studying.
Ivan's lips curled into a slight smile. If not for the trouble with Grindelwald, he would have enjoyed this noisy, carefree life.
But this problem wasn't going to be solved anytime soon. Grindelwald was more cautious than he had imagined, and in the entire week, he hadn't made any significant moves. The International Confederation of Wizards had also failed to provide any good news.
To avoid repeating past mistakes, Ivan didn't dare leave Hogwarts to search for Grindelwald. With an Invisibility Cloak, Grindelwald wasn't easy to find.
Only now did Ivan truly understand the situation Dumbledore had been in back then...
