Chapter 877: Man and Parrot
Chapter 877: Man and Parrot
"Realm of Law..."
"It's been decades, and this war still hasn't ended. Even in the history of this world, it's a significant event."
In the northern region of the Realm of Law, on the White Earth Plain.
A solitary figure walked on the ground, standing out in the wilderness with a blue-green outfit and a coarse cloth bag slung over his left shoulder. On his right shoulder stood a small and adorable Crimson Phoenix Parrot.
In the current Realm of Law, it was rare for someone to travel alone.
This was an extremely dangerous thing to do.
Even highly skilled Awakened individuals would consider their ability to protect themselves against armies of Awakened or true powerhouses.
But this man didn't seem to care about his dangerous situation.
As he walked, he occasionally took out a few pine nuts from his pocket and tossed them lightly with one hand. The parrot on his shoulder would catch them and quickly crack open the shells, eating the kernels inside.
The man glanced at the parrot on his shoulder:
"Hey, don't just focus on eating."
"How should we proceed from here? Before we left, didn't I ask you to memorize the map? How far is it to the next village now?"
"Goo—"
The little parrot on the man's shoulder swallowed the pine nut in its mouth.
It shook its head and wagged its tail, brushing against the man's face, before answering:
"Oh, I seem to have forgotten."
"..."
The man stopped in his tracks.
He looked at the little bird on his shoulder, still shaking its head, and then at the remaining pine nuts in his pocket:
"Stupid white feather, let's play a guessing game."
The parrot on his shoulder spread its wings, brimming with confidence:
"Bring it on! No riddle is too difficult for me!"
So, the man began:
"Guess if I remembered the map for the journey ahead."
"..."
"I'm just a parrot; asking me such a question is a bit too challenging, isn't it?"
As the words fell, the parrot flapped its wings and tried to rush out.
But the man had anticipated this.
As the little parrot took off, he quickly grabbed it with one hand, pulling it back in front of him.
"Gaa—gaa—gaa—"
The small Crimson Phoenix began to struggle.
Unfortunately, its small size made it easy for the man to catch it with one hand, grasping its wings and body, leaving only its head poking out, swaying left and right like a worm in an apple.
"I protest! I protest!"
"You messengers don't remember the maps yourselves, but you expect us pets to do it. That's so unreasonable!"
The man's eyebrows twitched.
"What are you squawking about?"
"Think about whether you're a crow or a parrot now!"
"And you, white feather, listen up. In recent years, just memorizing names and places has almost driven me crazy."
"In the Realm of Law now, only a few of us messengers are still working. You lazy bird, you should help me share the workload!"
The little parrot was stunned for a moment.
It looked down at the hand holding it, then up at the azure sky above.
Then, as if making a decision, it started to struggle fiercely:
"I protest! I protest!"
"When you invited me to travel with you, you didn't mention taking on such responsibilities."
"Waaah—"
The man tightened his grip, and the parrot's protest turned into a wail.
Suddenly, it had an idea and said:
"Don't use force! I have a solution!"
"Anyway, let's follow the sun. We can't go wrong with the general direction. Realm of Law..."
"Right in the heart of the world, we're definitely going there first!"
The man's grip loosened slightly, but his tone remained stern, "I have a few letters to deliver to specific villages along the way. It's not as simple as following the sun to find our direction."
The little parrot, quick-witted as ever, chimed in:
"Then let's search for it as we go."
"We're fast enough—if something goes wrong, I can grab you and fly for a bit. We should be able to escape, right?"
The man's anger was almost palpable:
"Do you think this is hunting in the mountains?"
"What if we run into the wrong people? If I can't escape, you'll end up as a roast bird!"
The parrot offered a practical suggestion:
"Then let's go full speed ahead and get a map when we reach the City of Law. Problem solved, right?"
The man sighed:
"My dear sister, you're so carefree."
"The City of Law is safe, but I doubt we'll find the latest and most detailed map there."
"In the current City of Law, the terrain can change drastically at any time. If we don't get an up-to-date map from the surroundings and rely on an old version, we're basically risking our lives!"
At this point, both the man and the parrot fell silent.
After a few seconds of waiting, the little parrot, still in the man's grasp, spoke up:
"I was thinking—why do you think the City of Law hasn't crowned a new ruler yet?"
The man's anger subsided as he was asked this question.
He released his grip, and after the parrot flew back to his shoulder, he sighed and said, "What else could it be?"
The parrot's eyes lit up:
"The Royal Artifacts of the City of Law! I was thinking, what if we..."
The man cut off the parrot's words:
"No 'what if'!"
The parrot was a bit disappointed:
"But this is such a rare opportunity..."
The man interrupted more firmly:
"No 'but'!"
The parrot pouted:
"I was just thinking..."
The man scoffed:
"Don't even think about it!"
"..."
For a moment, the duo fell silent once again.
Finally, the parrot spoke up first:
"Can I have two more pine nuts?"
"You want more?" The man raised an eyebrow. "If we don't find a suitable village for supplies soon, these pine nuts in my pouch are all the food you'll have on the way to the City of Law!"
The parrot on the man's shoulder was shocked to the core and soared upward like an arrow.
Just a few minutes later, it rushed back down, excitedly telling the man beside him:
"Look! Luck always favors kind birds and humans."
"Guess what—I found a human party up ahead."
The man immediately asked:
"Humans? Safe or dangerous?"
The parrot explained, its voice filled with confidence:
"It's a party sending young Awakened to the City of Law for Law training. It's safe!"
"Alright, stop overthinking. Let's go over there."
"If we're lucky, we might find some other nuts to try!"
