Chapter 873: Kyle's Plan, Excited Alastor
Chapter 873: Kyle's Plan, Excited Alastor
It wasn't just wandering wizards like Lainis who possessed an acute intuition for danger; even Moody, the Auror, was no exception.
This intuition had saved him countless times, allowing him to single-handedly fill half of Azkaban.
When he felt something unusual on his leg, Moody's entire body stiffened, and his hand instinctively tightened around his wand.
Out of instinct, the hidden Magic Eye began to rotate subconsciously, but Moody reacted even faster. In that instant, he suddenly thought of something, raised his hand, and directly plucked out the uncontrollable Magic Eye, gripping it tightly in his hand.
The force was so great that even the belt securing the Magic Eye was torn apart.
"What a ruthless person!"
Kyle couldn't help but smack his lips as he witnessed this scene.
Moody must have received some information from Dumbledore, which led to this action.
But, to be honest, it was a decisive move, even though it wasn't entirely necessary.
Kyle slowly raised his head.
There weren't many people surrounding them, including Lainis; there were only about a dozen, far fewer than at Godric's Hollow.
Moreover, in just a short while, more than half of them were already lying on the ground, motionless as if asleep.
A giant snake, approximately fifty feet long, coiled before Kyle, its orange-yellow irises seemed to possess a certain magic that could instantly take the life of any wizard who dared to meet its gaze.
This was also related to the foolishness of these people, who had positioned themselves at different spots, surrounding Moody in the middle.
Consequently, their positions were extremely scattered, and after being exposed to the snake's gaze, there wasn't a single person nearby to share the burden of the curses.
"Monster! Monster!"
"They're dead, all of them..."
"Run for your lives!"
No one knew who started it, but the remaining people began to flee in panic.
"I'll leave it to you..." Kyle said lightly, "Except for the leader, not a single one should be left alive."
The snake remained coiled before Kyle, motionless, but the treetops behind him gently swayed, and two dark shadows flashed by.
"Alright, Professor Moody, we're safe now," Kyle said after an unknown amount of time.
Moody opened his eyes and immediately saw the surrounding wizards lying on the ground.
"Kyle, you..."
"We're so lucky," Kyle smiled and said, "For some reason, they suddenly started killing each other, frantically attacking their own people with the Killing Curse, and in the end, they all perished together."
Moody opened his mouth.
He didn't believe Kyle's words at all.
Self-destruction? How could that be possible!
Moreover... Moody looked down and saw a deep mark on the ground, clearly left by some massive creature.
Combined with the sensation on his leg, the hissing sounds in the surroundings, and the rumors about the Hogwarts Chamber, he could basically confirm what that massive creature was, but he found it hard to believe.
Why would Dumbledore entrust such a dangerous thing to a student who had just graduated?
"Yes, we're indeed very lucky," Moody said after a moment of silence.
Regardless, he had already retired, no longer serving as an Auror or a Hogwarts professor, and even Dumbledore didn't seem to care. Why should he bother?
Moreover, Kyle had just saved him.
"Yes," Kyle smiled, "By the way, Professor, do you know who these people are? They don't seem like Death Eaters."
"Wandering wizards," Moody explained. "There are smugglers, dark wizards, or lunatics who enjoy tormenting Muggles. Most of them are wanted by the Ministry of Magic in their respective countries, and I caught quite a few when I was still an Auror."
"So, the Ministry isn't doing anything about it?"
"It's not that they're not doing anything, but it's difficult," Moody shook his head. "Just look at the location here, and you'll understand. At the slightest disturbance, most people will immediately flee.
"Moreover, this place has already become a self-contained system like Knockturn Alley, and dark wizards can never be completely eradicated. It's better to have them in a fixed location than scattered everywhere."
"That makes sense," Kyle nodded. "How many of them are there?"
"Over a hundred, I'd say."
"That many?"
"This is already considered few." Moody fixed his belt, reinserting his Magic Eye into its socket, "Because Dumbledore had cleaned up several times in the past, many people didn't dare to come back, and other countries wouldn't bother.
"The ones you see now appeared when the Dark Lord gained power years ago. At that time, Dumbledore and the Aurors were too busy to pay attention to them, which gave them the opportunity."
As they chatted, Moody's Magic Eye flew around, constantly rotating.
"Be careful, something's coming again."
"It's fine, no need to worry," Kyle said.
As soon as he finished speaking, a magical creature over fifty feet long walked over from the other side, carrying a half-dead wizard in its mouth.
"Kelpie?" Moody was taken aback and looked at the wizard held by the Kelpie.
Babor Lainis.
There were three long scratches on the wizard's chest and back, which were undoubtedly the Kelpie's handiwork... Unless it was a powerful wizard like Dumbledore or Voldemort, ordinary wizards would usually only get beaten up when encountering a 5X magical creature, and that included him.
Moody believed that while he might not fear a Kelpie in a one-on-one situation, the creature's hypnotic and Legilimency abilities could be challenging if he were in a state of panic, like running for his life.
As it happened, Lainis was indeed in a state of extreme panic while fleeing.
When the Kelpie pulled him, he survived, but barely.
"Well done. I'll treat you to a feast later," Kyle said.
The Kelpie nodded and, with a swift movement, leaped onto a tree, disappearing from sight once more.
Moody's magical eye spun rapidly.
"No need to search, Professor," Kyle said, "they should be gone by now, preventing others from intruding."
"They?" Moody asked sharply, picking up on a key word.
Kyle didn't elaborate on this question but instead asked curiously, "Professor, why would they go through all this trouble to dig a secret passage to Devonshire, intending to loot during the Dark Lord's chaos?"
"I don't think so," Moody replied after a moment's thought, shaking his head.
"According to my information, they started working on this passage over a decade ago, when the Dark Lord had already fallen.
"Even the Death Eaters only recently made contact with Lainis, and the one in charge of communicating with him was Bellatrix."
As he spoke, Moody's tone momentarily faltered.
He suddenly realized that Bellatrix was dead, and the person who had killed her was none other than Kyle, standing before him.
Initially, he hadn't believed that Kyle was responsible for what happened in Godric's Hollow, thinking that Dumbledore was also there, and Kyle had merely assisted.
But...
He glanced down at the indentations on the ground and suddenly doubted his previous thoughts.
Unaware of Moody's thoughts, Kyle stroked his chin, puzzled. "If not for looting, what's the point of them building this passage?"
The Aurors and Hit Wizards of the Ministry of Magic were not to be underestimated. According to Moody, these individuals had managed to coexist peacefully because they had stayed put and hadn't caused trouble elsewhere.
Similar to Knockturn Alley, as long as the Dark Wizards didn't venture out, the Aurors rarely went looking for trouble.
However, if they decided to stir up trouble, the Dementors would be more than happy to intervene.
Even if the Aurors and Hit Wizards couldn't handle the situation, there was still Dumbledore, who, despite focusing on the school and Voldemort in recent years, wouldn't mind lending a hand to the Ministry if it concerned the stability of British magical governance.
Kyle couldn't understand why these individuals would go to such lengths just to become lunch for the Dementors.
It made no sense.
"If I'm not mistaken, their target is probably Nicoleme," Moody said.
"Nicoleme?"
"Of course, this is just my speculation," Moody said as his magical eye spun back around from the back of his head. "These people only recognize Galleons, and the Philosopher's Stone, which can turn anything into gold, is an irresistible temptation for them.
"Over a decade ago, I arrested some individuals and found a wealth of information related to Nicoleme and the Philosopher's Stone among their possessions. At the time, the Death Eaters were our primary concern, so we simply threw them into Azkaban without further investigation."
"I see. Well, that's settled then."
"Moody, what's the matter? Do you want to kill them all?"
"What are you talking about?" Kyle replied righteously, "There are more than a hundred wizards, Professor. You're being a bit extreme."
Moody's scar on his face twitched slightly.
Extreme?
Even if he were extreme, he had only sent those dark wizards to Azkaban, not killed them.
Moody glanced at the people lying stiffly on the ground around them.
He didn't consider himself soft-hearted, and he didn't mind using the Killing Curse at times, but the number of dark wizards who had died by his hand was not necessarily more than Kyle's.
"What are you trying to say?" Moody asked irritably.
If he were still an Auror, he would have to bring Kyle back, no matter what, even if he was one of their own.
Unfortunately, he was no longer an Auror, and now he was just a retired old wizard who was naturally suspicious and disliked by others.
"Oh, is that so?" Kyle blinked, "Professor, do you mind dying for a bit?"
"If it's worth it, I don't mind." Moody said seriously.
He remembered that Sirius Black had regained his innocence with Kyle's help, and even Dumbledore had said that Kyle was resourceful, sometimes making him feel inferior.
Being praised by Dumbledore was enough to prove that Kyle indeed had the substance to back up his reputation.
If Kyle had any ideas that could help defeat Voldemort, he didn't mind cooperating wholeheartedly.
This was also the best outcome for an old Auror.
"No need to be so serious, it doesn't have to be a real death." Kyle waved his hand and looked at the unconscious Lainis, "Professor, if you were to replace this man, could you do it without being discovered?"
"Replace Lainis?" Moody's eyes lit up, "You mean, use a Polyjuice Charm to infiltrate their group?"
"That's the idea." Kyle said softly.
Moody quickly considered this possibility and realized it was indeed feasible.
More than a hundred wizards, all of them experienced veterans, would be a significant force. If utilized well, they could give the Death Eaters a huge surprise.
"No wonder you wanted to kill all those who tried to escape."
"Yeah, only when they're silenced can no one know what happened here." Kyle looked around.
With Kelpies and Nargles watching over them, they were temporarily safe.
"Well, Professor, what do you think of this idea?"
"No problem." Moody agreed almost without thinking, "My Transfiguration skills are quite good."
"No, the Polyjuice Charm is too risky." Kyle shook his head, "Only the Polyjuice Potion can guarantee absolute success, the only problem is that you need to drink it at intervals, which increases the chance of exposure."
"Don't worry, I'll figure it out." Moody said, his gaze falling on the golden flask at Lainis' waist.
"These guys don't trust each other, and I can start from there." As Moody spoke, a hint of excitement crept into his tone.
He finally understood why Dumbledore had called Kyle resourceful.
His initial plan was to kill Lainis and send the news from here back to the Phoenix Society, allowing them to prepare in advance rather than taking his place more boldly.
Even Dumbledore couldn't have come up with this plan. His character and powerful strength meant that he wasn't good at, and didn't need, this kind of conspiratorial stuff.
"There's something I must remind you of, Professor." Kyle spoke seriously, "This plan is extremely dangerous because you'll not only face those wanderer wizards but also possibly encounter the Dark Lord head-on, and it won't be easy to hide from him."
"I can't wait." Moody grinned, his scar twisting into a terrifying, ferocious smile.
The thought of possibly dancing on the edge of a knife excited Moody so much that he trembled all over.
While he didn't enjoy the feeling of being caught between suspicion and being suspected, constantly facing danger, he also couldn't adapt to the boring life after retirement.
The character formed during his Auror career made him stand out among ordinary wizards and also became a synonym for trouble in the mouths of his colleagues.
He was aware of all this, but character wasn't something that could be changed easily, so he blew up trash cans, destroyed street corner mailboxes, and chimneys on rooftops, and on average, he met the Incident Reversal Team once every two days.
"But I don't have the Polyjuice Potion." Moody suddenly thought of a crucial issue, "It seems I can only use the Polyjuice Charm for now, and I'll figure out something later."
"It's okay, I have it." Kyle took out several bottles containing the brown magical potion.
Moody's expression changed for a moment, thinking that Kyle might have planned this in advance... Otherwise, why would he have so much Polyjuice Potion with him?
The few bottles were enough for two days.
But Moody was overthinking it, as Kyle hadn't planned it.
The main reason was that this potion was too useful, so before coming here, he had specifically prepared some, not expecting it to come in handy.
