Chapter 870: Voldemort: This Is Impossible, Snape's Loyalty to Me Is as Hard as Steel!
Chapter 870: Voldemort: This Is Impossible, Snape's Loyalty to Me Is as Hard as Steel!
Snape's attack, though ineffective, had enraged Nagini. The twelve-foot-long Serpent hissed and coiled its body, lashing out furiously at Snape.
The terrifying venom had been eroding Snape's body, making his mind hazy and his reactions slow. He could only roll to the ground to narrowly avoid Nagini's bite.
Harry watched anxiously from the side. Without a wand, he scanned the surroundings, hoping to find something useful to help. However, the enclosed basement contained nothing but a few dusty pieces of furniture.
Meanwhile, Snape's condition was deteriorating. More frustratingly, none of the spells he cast had any effect on Nagini; they could only momentarily impede her movements.
Seeing the situation worsen, Harry didn't hesitate. He grabbed a chair and charged forward, aiming to catch Nagini off guard with a surprise attack. However, as if she had eyes in the back of her head, Nagini simply flicked her tail, shattering the chair Harry had thrown.
Perhaps annoyed by Harry's attempts, or simply looking for an easier target, Nagini abandoned Snape and slithered towards Harry. Her long tail whipped out, hooking Harry's ankle and dragging him to the ground. She opened her massive jaws and lunged.
Harry struggled to move backward, his right hand frantically searching the ground for something to use as a shield, eventually finding a heavy iron object.
Nagini's gaping maw was inches away, and Harry instinctively swung the object in his hand.
Clang!
The sound of metal striking metal echoed, and Harry felt a sharp pain in his right hand, almost losing his grip on the hilt. Fortunately, Nagini didn't fare much better, as she was thrown back by the blow.
Harry glanced at his right hand and was surprised to find he was holding a magnificent longsword, inscribed with Goblin runes. Clearly, this was Gryffindor's Sword.
Why did it suddenly appear here?
Harry was initially puzzled, but then he remembered Ron's words: those who truly possess the qualities of Gryffindor can summon this sword when needed.
Harry quickly looked back at Nagini, but to his disappointment, Gryffindor's Sword seemed to have no effect on the Serpent. After being knocked back, Nagini staggered to her feet again.
Just as Harry hesitated, Snape's weak voice reached him.
"Keep striking her with the sword, I'll create an opportunity for you..."
Harry held the sword, still uncertain. If his strikes were ineffective, repeating them would be futile.
Before Harry could voice his concerns, Snape took action. He rapidly waved his wand, and a cloud of smoke emerged from the tip, forming a black iron chain that tightly bound the Serpent.
"Quick! I can't hold her for long..." Snape shouted at the stunned Harry.
Harry's heart raced, and he immediately put aside his doubts, charging straight at the Serpent with the sword raised.
Nagini sensed the impending danger and writhed violently, but she couldn't break free from Snape's spell. She could only glare at Harry with venomous eyes.
Meeting her eerie gaze, Harry felt a bone-chilling coldness wash over him, as if he were facing Voldemort himself. However, this didn't scare him; instead, it fueled his defiance. With a roar, he summoned all his strength and swung the sword down!
"Die, monster!"
A faint Lumos began to glow on the magnificent sword, as if some mysterious power was being channeled through Harry's hands into the blade. This time, Nagini's nearly invincible defense failed to protect her. The sharp blade sliced into the serpent's body, leaving a deep, bone-deep wound.
Nagini let out agonized hisses and thrashed her body, successfully breaking free from Snape's bindings.
Harry, driven by a surge of courage, not only didn't retreat but stepped forward, placing his foot on the massive serpent. With his last ounce of strength, he thrust the sword into its head!
The silver blade pierced through the snake's brain, pinning Nagini to the ground!
The serpent struggled with its remaining strength, and with a violent thrash, it flung Harry away. But the final burst of energy didn't last long. Soon, Nagini collapsed, motionless, her body slowly disintegrating into a pile of gray ash.
It was finally over...
Harry struggled to his feet, letting out a slow breath. The fatigue and pain coursing through his body made him long to lie down and rest.
"Now isn't the time to celebrate, Potter. Voldemort has likely been alerted. We need to return to Hogwarts as quickly as possible!" Snape leaned against the wall, his brow furrowed, reminding Harry.
Completing the quest didn't mean safety. On the contrary, this was their most dangerous moment. An enraged Voldemort could return at any moment and finish them off.
What puzzled Snape, however, was that given how long they had been entangled with Nagini, Voldemort should have sensed it by now.
Or perhaps Voldemort's connection to the serpent wasn't as deep as he thought?
...
Three minutes earlier, inside Nurmengard Prison, the towering tower had become a battlefield for two powerful Dark Wizards. The walls had crumbled, and the ground was scarred by the effects of magic...
"It's time to end this, Grindelwald... I'll give you one last chance to live. Either leave now, or tell me where the Resurrection Stone is!" Voldemort glared at the figure of Grindelwald, faintly visible in the Azure Flame, his impatience evident. His mood was growing increasingly urgent.
Ever since their negotiations had broken down and the battle began, Voldemort had felt a nagging sensation that his base was being infiltrated!
Someone had entered the basement of Riddle House, likely after Nagini.
However, being in the midst of battle, Voldemort couldn't afford to be distracted. He could only roughly guess that it might be Snape's betrayal or a rebellion by the Death Eaters who had received the news.
Comparing the two, Voldemort was more inclined to believe the latter, as Snape had proven his loyalty countless times over the past two years, a loyalty as solid as steel!
It was beyond doubt!
Regardless of the truth, he needed to get there as quickly as possible, even at the cost of abandoning the Resurrection Stone.
But Grindelwald, for some inexplicable reason, held him back with a relentless grip. Additionally, Apparition was impossible within Nurmengard, leaving Voldemort in a difficult position.
(PS: In the original story, both Harry and Neville drew the sword from the Sorting Hat, but according to the legend provided, it seems the hat isn't strictly necessary. For now, this is how it's set. Also, Gryffindor's Sword has not absorbed the Basilisk venom, which is why it couldn't harm the Horcrux initially.)
