Chapter 866: Use the Disarming Charm on Me, Severus!
Chapter 866: Use the Disarming Charm on Me, Severus!
"But the Dark Lord's resurrection should have nullified Lily's Protective Charm, shouldn't it?" Snape asked, frowning.
"No! I believe you and he have both seriously underestimated the power of that Magic. Voldemort's decision to use Harry's blood to resurrect himself was a grave mistake!" Dumbledore said slowly.
Snape nodded. If this were true, the chances of Lily's child surviving would greatly increase.
However, after some careful consideration, Snape felt a sense of difficulty, as this quest was truly too challenging.
First, they needed to ensure that Harry would become the master of the Elder Wand and remain undefeated for a long time. Then, they had to bring him to Voldemort and have the Dark Lord cast the Killing Curse on him personally. Finally, they needed to get Harry out of there safely...
There could be no room for error in any of these steps, or else Potter would be doomed.
"What exactly should I do?" Snape was at a loss for ideas and could only look to Dumbledore for guidance.
"You only need to do three things to ensure this plan goes as smoothly as possible!" Dumbledore, clearly not intending to make things difficult for Snape, laid out his well-thought-out strategy.
"First, you need to hand over the Elder Wand to Voldemort and gain his complete trust!"
"This should be quite easy. In a week, I will die in a duel with Ivan Hals. Upon hearing of my death, Voldemort will become anxious and desperately seek new power..."
"Then I can take the opportunity to present The Tales of Beedle the Bard and the Elder Wand to Voldemort?" Snape immediately understood Dumbledore's intention.
"Exactly. Stirring up the conflict between me and Hals is precisely the quest Voldemort has given you, isn't it? This will further earn his trust." Dumbledore smiled.
"So you plan to reveal the Deathly Hallows to the Dark Lord as well?" Snape asked, slightly puzzled.
Wasn't this plan too risky? The Elder Wand alone could significantly boost Voldemort's power. What if Voldemort managed to gather all three Deathly Hallows?
"A mad, irrational Voldemort could cause immeasurable destruction. It's better to use the legend of the Three Hallows to guide him into his own death", Dumbledore explained.
From his understanding of Voldemort, once the Dark Lord realized he could never defeat Ivan Hals, he would likely do something cruel and insane.
But with a new hope, Voldemort would likely continue to endure and focus all his efforts on seeking the Three Hallows—precisely what Dumbledore wanted!
Snape thought for a moment and did not argue further. Instead, he hurriedly asked Dumbledore how he could ensure that Harry would not be defeated by some unexpected event during the time it took to set everything up.
"That's the second point I was about to make!" Dumbledore said. "I need someone to ensure that Harry becomes the true master of the Elder Wand at the right moment!"
"How can we ensure that?" Snape asked.
"Of course..." Dumbledore suddenly became serious. "Use the Disarming Charm on me, Severus!"
"What did you say?" Snape's mind couldn't process it immediately, but Dumbledore had already raised his wand, his hair and beard fluttering. A beam of golden-red light quickly formed at the tip of his wand and shot towards Snape.
Snape felt a tingling sensation at the back of his head, and in the face of life and death, he instinctively followed Dumbledore's instructions and launched a counterattack.
"Expelliarmus~ (Expelliarmus)"
The golden-red beam of light flew right over Snape's head, but the Disarming Charm he cast hit its mark, causing Dumbledore's wand to fly out of his hand, tracing an arc through the air.
Snape reached out and caught the wand, and just as he steadied himself, Dumbledore's voice came again.
"Find the most appropriate moment to do the same thing to Harry."
Snape looked at the wand in his hand, then at Dumbledore, quickly understanding that Dumbledore intended for him to act as a conduit for the inheritance. If he were disarmed by Harry at the right moment, Harry would naturally become the new master of the Elder Wand.
Admittedly, this was an extremely clever method. Most wizards wouldn't have the ability to defeat him, and those who could, like Ivan and Voldemort, relied on him as a spy and would never act against him so easily!
"Besides, I will arrange for you to teach Harry Occlumency... if all goes well, you should be able to easily keep track of Harry's every move. With Voldemort's trust, you should be able to carry out all my instructions", Dumbledore said casually.
Snape smiled bitterly. It sounded easy enough for Dumbledore, but deceiving Harry, keeping Ivan Hals in the dark, and outmaneuvering Voldemort would be a task of hellish difficulty.
But Snape also knew he had no choice. To protect Lily's child, this was almost the best way.
As for why he had to keep it from Ivan?
Dumbledore didn't say, but Snape saw it clearly. The legend of the Deathly Hallows was too astonishing; any wizard would be tempted by it. If he were Ivan, he wouldn't allow such a treasure to fall into Voldemort's hands.
Additionally, there was a faster way to destroy Voldemort's Horcruxes: killing Harry!
If it were a year ago, Snape might have naively believed that Ivan Hals would consider Harry's life out of old feelings. But the Ministry of Magic battle had revealed Ivan's true ambitions. The Minister of Magic was killed on a whim, and it was rumored that dozens of Aurors had died. This was darker than any Dark Lord!
"What is the last thing you want me to do?" Snape asked Dumbledore, his heart heavy. The first two tasks were already troubling him, and he feared the last one might be even harder.
Dumbledore closed his eyes and pondered for a long while. Just as Snape was growing impatient, Dumbledore opened his eyes and spoke slowly, word by word. "After you complete the first two tasks, take Voldemort to Nurmengard and tell him that Grindelwald was the previous master of the Elder Wand, and that he once sought the Three Hallows. He is the most likely to know the whereabouts of the Resurrection Stone."
"Grindelwald?! The Dark Lord you defeated over fifty years ago?" Snape was confused. "You want to lead Voldemort to him? Why?"
"You only need to tell Voldemort these words", Dumbledore said, not offering any further explanation.
"Regarding the Deathly Hallows, Voldemort will not take you with him when he goes to Nurmengard. I doubt he will return anytime soon... so this is a perfect opportunity. You must use Voldemort's trust to find the hiding place of the Serpent. Take advantage of this window to destroy it!"
