Chapter 85: The Deal
Chapter 85: The Deal
As soon as Chen Chuan and the others stepped off the armed transport vehicle, they were escorted to Guan Yuming's temporary command post.
Guan Yuming briefed them on the situation through his deputy, then added, "Ladies and gentlemen, Mrs. Fang has already prepared the medicine. Now, I need you to act according to the situation. If the conditions are right during the transaction, you must find a way to rescue the hostages. Once they're safe, it'll be easier for us to take action."
Despite his words, the Wu Yi students could choose to refuse, as they were currently under the commission of the client and not subordinates, making this task non-compulsory for them.
Han Guo, responsible for providing information and assessments, remained silent. It was up to the students to decide, and she wouldn't interfere.
One of the senior students, Liu, pondered for a moment before asking, "What's the situation with the villagers of Caijiashai?"
"We're not entirely sure," Guan Yuming replied. "Caijiashai was likely occupied by the resistance organization beforehand, and these bandits seem to have connections with Fang Dawei's gang. All we can say is that the situation within the village is concerning."
The students discussed among themselves and leaned towards accepting the task, considering they had the autonomy to act according to the situation. If the opportunity didn't present itself, they could choose not to take action.
Chen Chuan didn't voice any objections, as the senior students had more experience. Their discussion revealed a reasonable plan.
At this point, Senior Liu made a request, "Commissioner Guan, we can agree, but given that the enemies have implants and firearms, we need the Patrol Bureau to provide us with protective armor and grant us temporary authorization to wear it."
Guan Yuming readily agreed, "Of course." If these individuals could resolve the issue, it would save him a lot of trouble.
Hearing his approval, the senior students relaxed a bit. With the protective armor, they could afford to be bolder in their actions.
The armor was promptly delivered, and although it was standard issue, it was sufficient for their needs.
Everyone quickly changed into the armor, including Chen Chuan. The armor was form-fitting and had some thickness, but it wasn't overly heavy, allowing for unhindered movement.
Just then, Mrs. Fang's medicine arrived, and Guan Yuming sent a message into the village via the messenger. After receiving a definitive response, the group set off towards the village with the medicine.
Along the way, the senior student, Wu, suddenly asked Chen Chuan, "Junior Chen, are you nervous?"
"Not really," Chen Chuan replied.
Senior Wu glanced at him and with a snort, he said, "Well, you're quite something. I don't feel entirely at ease myself."
"Alright, let's not say more."
At this moment, Senior Liu turned back towards Chen Chuan and spoke solemnly, "Chen, I know you're capable, but you might lack experience in handling situations like this. I'll handle the negotiations with the bandits. If the opportunity doesn't arise, we'll let it go. Just remember, under no circumstances should you act impulsively, as we're not individuals but a team. A mistake could endanger everyone. But if we must take action, don't hold back."
He then looked at the others, "The same goes for you all."
Senior Wu nodded, "Alright, Senior Liu."
Chen Chuan agreed, understanding the logic behind the advice. He recognized the importance of prioritizing personal safety above all else, regardless of the task at hand.
As the group approached the village, Senior Liu peered inside and, seeing the village was eerily quiet, turned back to Chen Chuan and Wu, "Junior Chen, you two wait at the village entrance and provide support. Remember to stay apart and not stand together."
Senior Wu seemed slightly dissatisfied with being left behind but muttered something under his breath.
Chen Chuan nodded in agreement.
The arrangement made sense, as having someone outside was indeed a safer option, ensuring they wouldn't be cut off from retreat. Chen Chuan had no objections to the plan, regardless of who stayed outside.
After Senior Liu's instructions, he and the other three students entered the village, splitting into pairs for safety, maintaining a distance of over ten meters between each pair.
Once inside, the village remained eerily quiet, as if deserted. Looking around, they spotted a three-story brick and wood building in the center, likely the village's main structure. Cautiously, they made their way towards it.
At the sentry command post, Guan Yuming was using a telescope to keep an eye on their movements while also observing the village. However, he didn't notice any activity, as if everyone had hidden themselves.
Just as some members of Wu Yi's group had ventured deep into the village, almost out of sight, the phone rang again.
The deputy answered and turned back, saying, "Guan Bureau, the Commissioner is calling."
Guan Yuming immediately turned and answered, "Hello, this is Guan Yuming." A voice came through instantly, and as soon as he heard the first sentence, his expression tightened, and he couldn't help but look towards the village. He immediately instructed the messenger patrol officer, "Send a message, tell them to come back immediately!"
The messenger patrol officer reacted swiftly and dashed out.
Chen Chuan waited below the gentle slope and suddenly heard a distant shout from behind.
He turned and saw a patrol officer running out from a distant hill, shouting at him. At that moment, the Wu surname trainee in front moved his ears slightly, as if he had also heard the words. He immediately rushed into the village and shouted inside, "Everyone, the child is not in the village! Commissioner Guan wants us to return!"
Liu Xuelang and the others heard this from a distance and immediately ran back without hesitation. But just then, Liu Xuelang's group faintly heard a child's crying from within the village.
They paused in their tracks.
The female trainee quickly spoke up, "The child is not here."
"But there's a child inside!"
Liu Xuelang replied in a deep voice. He snatched the protective umbrella from the female trainee's hand and gave her a gentle push, saying, "You go back first!" Then, he turned back and rushed towards the direction of the sound.
The female trainee looked at him, clenched her teeth, and started running back.
But just then, a loud explosion suddenly echoed from behind her on the road. One after another, the houses in the center of the village collapsed, and the flying debris and stones fell from the village, even reaching the spot where Chen Chuan and the others were standing, covering them in a shower of dust and gravel.
At the sentry command post, Fang Furen was anxiously awaiting, her face turning pale at the sound of the explosion. Her hands and feet began to tremble.
She stumbled over to Guan Yuming, grabbed his arm, and said with utmost fear, "Commissioner Guan, weren't you going to send someone else? I gave them the medicine too. Did you force those people? Why would you do that? My son is only seven, he hasn't done anything wrong."
Guan Yuming said, "Mrs. Fang, please calm down. Your son is not in the village."
Mrs. Fang almost doubted her own hearing, but then a glimmer of hope rose within her. She clutched Guan Yuming's arm tightly, her nails digging into his flesh, and stared at him, her voice hoarse, "He's not in the village? Where is he? Where is he?!"
Guan Yuming seemed unaffected and spoke in a soothing tone, "I just received a call. Your son, Fang Xunli, snuck out of the door at 8:30 am and went to his classmate's house. I don't know how he managed it, but he's currently with his classmate."
He looked at the stunned Mrs. Fang and said, "So the kidnappers didn't manage to abduct your son."
Mrs. Fang seemed to lose all her strength and started to slide down. Guan Yuming quickly supported her and instructed his deputy, "Take Mrs. Fang back."
The deputy hurried over to assist.
"Reporting!"
The messenger patrol officer saluted and reported, "Captain Yu, I have news. Fang Dawei and his group withdrew from the north during the transaction. Should we pursue?"
Guan Yuming replied sternly, "Send a message, tell them to follow immediately and not let those people escape!"
"Yes, sir!"
At that moment, Han Guo was also observing the village with a telescope when the driver of the armored transport vehicle approached her and handed her a telegram, saying, "Commissioner Han, there's a telegram for you."
She took it and quickly translated it in her mind, understanding its content. She replied, "Reply, I acknowledge. I will inform the assigned trainees of the situation truthfully."
