Chapter 847: Time in Reverse
Chapter 847: Time in Reverse
"Is that child a member of the Demon Slayer Corps?"
Daki walked towards the bathing area. To her, apart from the top-notch Pillars, regular members of the Demon Slayer Corps were no different from ordinary humans, making them hard to distinguish. However, Tanjiro was somewhat special.
Since she could vaguely sense something different about him, he was most likely one.
"We finally found one. I wonder what kind of prey this one will be."
A slight curve formed on Daki's lips.
Together with her brother, over the course of several hundred years, they had killed twenty-two Pillars. She had slain seven, while her brother had taken the lives of fifteen. On average, every few years, a Pillar would investigate this place and subsequently become her meal.
A few days ago, she had captured someone who came to investigate. Although the person remained tight-lipped despite her interrogation, the Demon Slayer Corps must have taken notice of this place. She had already been making preparations.
However...
Before the battle, she needed to properly 'preserve' her 'ingredient' to prevent any damage to it.
Daki lightly walked into the bathing area. In truth, she didn't need to bathe. As a demon, her physical constitution had long since diverged from that of a human. She couldn't even remember the last time she had sweated. Her skin possessed self-healing abilities, naturally keeping it clean and pure.
After a brief walk through the bathing area, she returned to her room, intending to quickly store away Fengye, this 'ingredient', to avoid any unexpected twists.
She walked back with light, brisk steps.
However, to Daki's slight surprise, the room was empty, and there was no sign of Fengye.
"Where did the guest go? Did they bathe?"
Daki turned her head and asked the petite handmaiden beside her.
The handmaiden blankly looked at her, a hint of confusion in her eyes as she asked, "What guest?"
Daki paused, then furrowed her brows slightly. "The guest from earlier. Didn't you lead him to the bedroom?"
The handmaiden looked perplexed. "The guest from earlier? But... there weren't any guests today."
"None?!"
Daki froze, her first reaction being that the handmaiden was lying. A sharp glint flashed in her eyes, and she grabbed the handmaiden by the collar, demanding, "What's going on? Where did the person from earlier go?!"
Terrified by Daki's demeanor, the handmaiden was on the verge of tears. "Th-there wasn't anyone. No one entered your room today."
Daki's eyebrows shot up, and she turned to look at the other handmaidens nearby. They all wore expressions of bewilderment and uncertainty, their anxious gazes fixed on her. This bizarre scenario left her heart filled with doubt and suspicion.
"No guests today? None of you saw him either? The guest with silver hair?!"
She turned to the others and shouted at them.
However, they all looked at each other, their faces reflecting their confusion. It seemed like no one had actually come by.
It was possible for one person to have an issue, but how could all of them be mistaken?!
Daki abruptly turned back to the previous room, only to find it spotless. The sweets and drinks she had prepared were nowhere to be seen, and even the robe she had been wearing earlier was neatly hung up.
This was insane!
A faint sense of unease crept into her heart, and she knocked on the door. "Boss lady?"
Soon, the boss lady arrived, but she, too, wore a confused expression in response to Daki's questions. "There weren't any guests today. Are you mistaken, Daki?"
Could she have been mistaken?
No, that's impossible!
Her memory couldn't possibly be faulty!
At this moment, Daki realized that aside from herself, everyone in the establishment, including the boss lady, seemed to have lost their memories of the man from earlier.
"That guy..."
Her expression turned uncertain.
If it wasn't Muzan, then who else could have such power? Was it the work of the Demon Slayers?
Daki narrowed her eyes and subconsciously glanced out the window.
The sky outside still retained a hint of twilight, not yet fully darkened.
No!
That's not right!
When she had gone to bathe earlier, the night had already fallen!
"What time is it now?!"
A chilling sensation crept up Daki's spine, and she turned to the petite handmaiden beside her, her voice laced with urgency.
The handmaiden, looking perplexed, quickly checked a clock and replied, "It's 6:30 in the afternoon. The sky is about to darken."
Daki's face twitched, and then she suddenly recalled something. "What date is it today?"
The handmaiden was startled by Daki's demeanor and, with a nervous tone, answered, "It's the 15th. Don't you remember, Flower Chief?"
Daki staggered, her face paling.
The 15th?
But today is the 16th!
After repeatedly confirming this bizarre turn of events, she finally realized that time had indeed reversed by a day! Not only had all the events of yesterday been undone, but the person she had eaten yesterday was now alive and well, back in the space where she stored her ingredients!
It wasn't just memory alteration.
Time itself had reversed by a day!
While memory alteration was strange enough, the reversal of time was something she found utterly incomprehensible, something not even Muzan should be capable of!
"Brother! Brother!"
Daki ran into the darkness of the rooftop, her voice filled with trepidation as she roused Gyutaro from his slumber.
Gyutaro, far from being annoyed at being awakened, looked at Daki with concern.
Daki's eyes darted anxiously as she spoke, "Brother, do you know what just happened? Did you see that man?"
Although Gyutaro had been asleep, he could share Daki's vision and even remotely control her actions, so whatever Daki saw, Gyutaro saw as well.
Oddly enough, Gyutaro looked just as perplexed as he asked, "What man?"
"..."
Daki's voice trailed off, her entire body frozen in place.
Seeing his sister immobilized, Gyutaro's brow furrowed. "What's going on?"
"..."
Daki remained rooted to the spot.
It seemed that Gyutaro, like the owner of the establishment and the others, had no memory of the future that day.
Only she retained the memory of that day.
And the one responsible for this turn of events seemed to be that man.
But who was he?
In her over a hundred years of existence, she had encountered countless individuals: the highest-ranking nobles, members of the Demon Slayer Corps, the Pillars, the Upper Moons, and even Muzan Kibutsuji, the Demon King, who had lived for over a millennium.
Yet, upon reflection, she realized that Feng Ye was unlike any of them.
The casual conversations they had shared now seemed to carry hidden meanings.
