Chapter 84: Lanchi's Affinity for the Demon Tribe
Chapter 84: Lanchi's Affinity for the Demon Tribe
As the clock in the Demon Academy struck five in the morning, time seemed to slow to a crawl, awaiting some sort of transformation. A hint of dawn's light, delicate and quiet, crept in through the windowsills of the botanical garden, casting a soft glow through the leaves.
The misty luminescence filled the air, and the entire Demon Shadow World began to rise and dissipate like bubbles.
Finally, Lanchi closed the book in his hands.
The next second, this ancient tome of the Demon Tribe, as if washed by the tides of time, slowly dissolved along with the scene of the Demon World Botanical Experimental Garden.
In the blink of an eye, Lanchi and Shubelian found themselves standing in a transparent room enveloped by the eternal night sky, with only sparse starlight shimmering around them, providing just enough brightness to see their surroundings clearly.
This was the liminal space between the real world and the Shadow World.
Lanchi could see a narrow crack in the transparent barrier not far away, from which emanated a few strands of tranquil purple radiance—it was a small Void Gate.
Passing through it should allow them to return to the present world.
However, the settlement of the Shadow World seemed to be delayed.
Although the true Shadow World wouldn't fail to produce results like the artificial one, Lanchi had heard that if there were too many abnormal situations that deviated from the mechanisms during the challenge in the real Shadow World, it would prolong the settlement process.
He had no idea how much longer this one would take.
Lanchi smiled and looked up at Shuberian, ready to chat with her.
He remembered that Shuberian had been talking to him just now, but he had been too focused on the last bit of the book.
Then, a hint of confusion crept into Lanchi's expression.
"Shuberian, what's wrong?"
Lanchi asked, puzzled by Shuberian's expression as he murmured,
"Oh right, is it because that guy said you're a half-demon?"
Lanchi realized that Shuberian had been fine until the criminal who was devoured by the demon called her a "half-demon" in his dying moments, after which her demeanor changed slightly.
"Mhm."
Meeting Lanchi's gaze, as gentle as ever, Shuberian felt her tense heart finally ease a little.
Up until this moment, she had become certain that she didn't want to lose Lanchi as a friend, no matter what.
But then...
She never expected what came next.
"My goodness, do you have demon blood?"
Lanchi couldn't hide the admiration in his eyes as he stared at her and asked.
This completely flustered Shuberian.
She had never met anyone who, upon learning of her half-demon heritage, expressed not disgust but genuine... admiration?
"You really don't hate demons? You've been with one all day," Shuberian said in disbelief.
She had never encountered anyone in this world with such a friendly attitude towards demons! Even her father initially held disdain for demons until he met her mother and gradually changed his views.
"Er..."
Lanchi hesitated, stroking his chin in thought for a moment, his eyes seemingly reminiscing about the leadership group he had formed at the Inferno Corridor Academy.
"..."
Shuberian was also at a loss for words.
Forget it, this guy was a demon through and through, so it wasn't surprising if he got along with other demons.
Shuberian recalled Lanchi's actions in the Demon Academy.
In the end, she let out a sigh of understanding.
"My mother was a great demon from the north who drifted here, fell in love with my father, Duke Migaya Alan Sal, while disguised as a commoner girl, and eventually gave birth to me."
Shuberian lowered her eyes, her gaze filled with a myriad of thoughts, as she confessed to Lanchi.
Shuberian didn't know if her father, Duke Alan Sal, had discovered her mother's true identity as a demon, or if he had known all along and simply pretended otherwise.
The truth could no longer be hidden when she, a half-demon infant, was born. Soon after, her mother quietly left the Kingdom of Herton...
Shuberian still remembered the sorrowful expressions her father used to wear. Even after learning of her mother's true nature, his greatest wish remained to win her back.
Duke Alan was the only person Shuberian believed would genuinely accept demons in the Kingdom of Herton.
Of course, there might be another kind soul like him.
Lanchi scratched his head upon hearing this.
It all sounded so familiar.
Yet another demon from the north, and a great one at that. Could they be related to Talia?
"I feel like all the demons I meet are pretty nice. Why does everyone else dislike them so much...?"
Lanchi said, perplexed.
He found the world's animosity towards demons too heavy, as they posed no harm.
"...Is it possible that you're just too kind-hearted?"
Shuberian didn't know how to respond to Lanchi.
If anyone else in the human realm had made such a bold statement, they might have been attacked or labeled as a hypocrite. But when Lanchi said it, the nature of the comment changed because, indeed, demons seemed like harmless little bunnies in front of him.
"Sigh, that's also why, as a duke's daughter, I'm despised by everyone in the royal capital of Yike Litet. After the war decades ago, everyone firmly believed that demons and humans couldn't coexist, even if I only have half-demon blood."
Shuberian spoke as if she had finally found someone to confide in, sharing her long-held thoughts with Lanchi.
Lanchi had only recently arrived in this northern kingdom, once ravaged by war, from the southern border territory, and it was now just past five o'clock on the second day of school. He was still unfamiliar with the area and its people.
In fact, if he spent a few more days at the academy and interacted with his peers, he would likely learn about Shuberian's half-demon heritage.
Then he would naturally understand the hostility the people of this kingdom held towards demons.
"So, you're saying that even though the people of this kingdom know about your demon blood, they still respect you as a duke's daughter?"
Lanchi asked, a slight smile playing on his lips.
Shuberian was taken aback by his words and found herself gazing into his warm, emerald green eyes.
For a moment, she didn't know how to respond.
She didn't understand.
Why did the statement, "As a duke's daughter, I'm shunned by everyone because of my demon blood,"
sound like a fortunate turn of events when Lanchi repeated it?
"You're something else..."
Shuberian looked at Lanchi with a resigned expression, as if to say, "You've got me there."
"You did the same thing last time with Vivian. I can't keep up with your way of speaking."
Although she sounded like she was complaining,
there was a sense of relief in her true, heartfelt smile—not a fake smile or an act learned in this fourth-tier demon shadow world, but the sincere smile of a person.
