Chapter 84: Heifeng Sanren Was Stunned Beyond Belief
Chapter 84: Heifeng Sanren Was Stunned Beyond Belief
Having just completed an investigation mission, Xiao Chen used the next few days as a rest period, staying atop Azurewater Peak instead of taking more sect assignments. While waiting for the Foundation Building trial, he focused on cultivating the Truth-Seeing Spirit Eye.
Thankfully, although spirit herbs were currently scarce, other resources remained relatively accessible. At the Treasure Pavilion, he spent 333 spirit stones to purchase the corresponding wood-element spirit liquid. Extracting a single drop, he applied it to his eye and used his unique Heart Sutra to refine it. Repeating this process 3,333 times would grant minor mastery.
Ordinary cultivators could refine at most twice daily, but Xiao Chen’s Hex allowed him to process ten drops a day, accelerating his progress. Of course, this meant consuming one spirit stone daily—a costly cultivation pace.
On the sixth day of early August, Xiao Chen learned early that morning about renewed trouble on the plains. The bandit cultivators had returned. The sect dispatched five groups to the area before noon.
At midday, a junior from the Merit Hall knocked on his door: “Senior Brother Xiao, we need someone to deliver these pills to the plains.”
Pingyuan County lay only 300 miles from Lihuo Sect. At a decent speed, the round trip would take three days. Xiao Chen accepted without hesitation, packed his storage bag, and departed.
The moment he left sect grounds, a Jiang family messenger reported his departure to Jiang Changhua, who relayed the news to Heifeng Sanren via a thousand-mile sound transmission talisman.
After delaying so long, Heifeng Sanren wasted no time. He rushed to intercept Xiao Chen on the main route.
At nightfall, as Heifeng Sanren meditated, his spiritual sense suddenly flared. Detecting a lone traveler, he mounted his Flying Sword and gave chase.
Xiao Chen, mid-journey, heard a thunderous shout: “Halt!” He turned to see a cultivator soaring on a Flying Sword, exuding an unmistakable Foundation Building aura.
“I am Xiao Chen of Lihuo Sect. Who are you, Senior?”
In their territory, simply stating his sect affiliation usually deterred trouble.
Heifeng Sanren sneered, “A pretty boy indeed.”
Xiao Chen studied him, certain he’d never met this Foundation Building cultivator.
Heifeng Sanren cackled, “Boy, your luck ran out today. Someone wants you dead—and a message: In your next life, watch who you offend.”
Nine fireballs erupted behind him. With a flick, all ten hurtled toward Xiao Chen. “Remember—Heifeng Sanren killed you!”
Xiao Chen’s spine chilled. He activated Golden Armor and flung a low-grade Magic Robe from his bag. The first fireball reduced it to ash, its power rivaling toxic raven black flame, slightly weaker than xuanyang bing fire. But nine remained.
The explosion engulfed him.
Heifeng Sanren nodded, satisfied. Killing a Foundation-Builder was child’s play—until the flames cleared.
Xiao Chen emerged, unharmed in his Golden Armor. Heifeng Sanren’s scattered attack had struck different armor plates, dispersing the force.
“Take this!” Xiao Chen roared, feigning a sword strike with Evergreen Sword while secretly activating Golden Light Technique to flee.
Heifeng Sanren, stunned, reflexively conjured a water barrier as defense. The Evergreen Sword clanged weakly against it before dissolving in the water.
Looking up, he saw Xiao Chen had abandoned his sword entirely, already dozens of feet away.
“Cunning brat—where do you think you’re going?!” Heifeng Sanren pursued, but his heart sank.
Xiao Chen accelerated, his golden light flashing fifty feet per blink—faster than Heifeng Sanren’s Flying Sword.
“This is impossible!” Heifeng Sanren gasped. Even the famed Wind Release Technique at grand mastery only reached a tenth of this speed.
Xiao Chen’s escape defied all logic. Heifeng Sanren now understood why the Jiang family had insisted on eliminating him.
As the distance widened, Heifeng Sanren chanted a spell. A mass of water materialized, solidifying into a colossal ice blade.
“Die!” He slashed.
The ice blade struck Xiao Chen’s back, but a talisman erupted from his chest—“Fire talisman, detonate!”—obliterating the blade mid-strike.
Heifeng Sanren gaped. The explosion’s power rivaled a seasoned Foundation-Builder’s. For the first time, he felt like hunting a peer, not a Foundation-Builder.
Drawing a heart-piercing nail—a demonic weapon—he launched it. It tore through Xiao Chen’s Plains Shield, shattered his Golden Armor, and sliced his Magic Robe. Only a thin layer of Golden Light Technique deflected it at the last moment.
The nail clattered away, spent. Heifeng Sanren retrieved it, but Xiao Chen vanished into the horizon—a golden speck blinking out of sight.
“He… survived my heart-piercing nail?” Heifeng Sanren whispered, staring at his weapon as if it had betrayed him.
The truth defied belief.
“He actually… survived?” His voice cracked, echoing into the night.
