Chapter 826: The World According to Feng Ye
Chapter 826: The World According to Feng Ye
"An interesting story, indeed." Feng Ye smiled gently.
Interesting?
Kanae whispered, "But so many people have died. Muzan's existence has brought countless tragedies to this world, and you find it merely interesting?"
She struggled to comprehend Feng Ye's perspective and even harder to accept it. All the efforts she had made, all the lives of the Demon Slayer Corps members sacrificed—to Feng Ye, they were merely interesting, insignificant even.
Feng Ye calmly said, "Tragedies? Muzan has indeed killed many, but... no matter how many he's slain, it pales in comparison to the atrocities humans inflict upon each other. This world is constantly plagued by conflict, even wars, where millions perish in a single battle. The total number of people Muzan has killed so far may not even match the casualties caused by a single order from a ruler of a nation."
Kanae fell silent for a moment before responding, "So this is how you view the world."
Feng Ye's words held truth; from a global perspective, Muzan's actions might seem like a minor blemish. Yet, she still found it difficult to agree with his 'interesting' perspective.
"No, that's not how I view the world." Feng Ye shook his head. His eyes, as he looked at Kanae, were dark and deep, as if reflecting a microcosm of the entire world. "Let me show you something that might help you understand a little."
Feng Ye walked forward and lifted his finger, gently touching Kanae's soul with his fingertip.
In an instant,
Kanae's perspective began to shift, her vision drawing farther and farther away. She saw the entire estate, the small town, the region, until she beheld the entire island nation and then the world.
It wasn't merely a bird's-eye view of Earth from space, but a perspective akin to that of a deity. While she could see the whole world, she could also zoom in on any corner of it simultaneously.
However, the entire world before her was frozen in time.
She saw Butterfly Ninja, running with tears streaming down her face, the tears and pain frozen on her countenance.
She saw the headquarters of the Demon Slayer Corps and the worried figure of Kagaya Ubuyashiki, his head bowed low.
She saw Higekiri Sangomu, still rigorously training in the middle of the night.
She saw demons devouring humans.
She saw Kokushibo, Akaza, and the other Upper Rank demons.
She even saw Kibutsuji Muzan, disguised as a human.
...
"This is the world," Feng Ye whispered in her ear.
Kanae bit her lip. Even though the tragic scenes were frozen, the sight of demons devouring humans and the sad events unfolding before her eyes disturbed her deeply.
However,
The next moment, she froze.
For the entire world in her vision had suddenly undergone a tremendous transformation.
Kibutsuji Muzan, Kokushibo, Doma... all the Upper and Lower Rank demons, as well as ordinary demons, had vanished. The world itself had changed, with many buildings and people undergoing transformations.
The Demon Slayer Corps had also disappeared.
Kanae was stunned. To explain the astonishment she felt, she looked for Kagaya Ubuyashiki.
But the Kagaya Ubuyashiki before her was vastly different from her memories. He wore extravagant robes and resided in a massive estate, with numerous maidens attending to him.
He seemed to have transformed into a powerful lord of a region.
Kanae then turned her gaze to Butterfly Ninja.
Butterfly Ninja was now dressed in a white nurse's uniform, caring for patients in a hospital.
"What is going on...?"
Kanae was at a loss to understand what was unfolding before her.
Feng Ye's voice sounded once more, calm and detached as if relating a trivial matter: "I made a slight alteration to this world's history. By erasing Kibutsuji Muzan from the past, the past has been changed, and the present along with it. This is what you are witnessing now."
Kanae fell silent, her mind reeling.
Altering history?
While it was conceivable to her that someone could possess the power to destroy the moon or even the Earth, the notion of tampering with the timeline, rewriting the past, and altering history was beyond her comprehension.
Whoosh!
It seemed as though Feng Ye had performed another action.
Once more, the world underwent a transformation.
This time, Kanae witnessed Kagaya Ubuyashiki reduced to begging on the streets, while her sister, Butterfly Ninja, appeared to be a noblewoman's daughter, clad in clean and luxurious attire and residing in a bright, spacious mansion.
Whoosh! Whoosh!
The world continued to shift, each alteration resembling the previous one yet resulting in starkly different lives for the people within it.
Finally, with the last shift, everything returned to how it had been originally, as if all that had transpired had been an illusion.
Then,
The perspective of overlooking the world gradually faded, and Kanae's vision returned to normal.
"Do you understand now?"
Feng Ye stood before Kanae, his demeanor tranquil as he spoke: "History, the past—to me, they are but easily modified narratives. With a slight stroke of my pen, I can rewrite history and prevent a nation from ever existing."
"Moreover, I can go back to the very beginning of this world's creation and give it a gentle nudge, ensuring that none of the life forms that exist today ever come to be."
"Life and death, all things in this universe, are but fleeting illusions."
His voice echoed in the void.
Kanae's soul remained suspended, unable to process what she had just experienced for a long moment.
Gradually, her expression became complex, reflecting the turmoil of her thoughts.
Finally, she understood.
Just as authors crafted tragic worlds in their epic tales, could they be blamed for a lack of empathy? To Feng Ye, this world was akin to a work that could be casually modified—a mere thought could alter the past and future... Indeed, as Feng Ye had said, it was merely interesting.
When she read a book, she, too, might describe the world within as interesting.
Interesting, and nothing more.
However, because of this, her persistence, her beliefs, and the sacrifices of the Demon Slayer Corps held significance. What they had done was not a joke; at the very least, it would be remembered and acknowledged as having existed.
Even if, one day, Feng Ye decided on a whim to erase this history, there would still be traces left behind.
"I want to follow you."
Kanae had made her choice.
Had she not witnessed what she had just seen, she might have chosen differently. But now, she knew what she had to do. She wanted to stay by Feng Ye's side and strive to preserve this fragment of their shared history.
Even if, someday, she was unable to prevent this history from crumbling to dust and vanishing, at least she would remember. And in that remembrance, their existence would not be in vain.
"Very well."
Feng Ye smiled gently.
