Chapter 82: I Never Expected You to Be Such a Professor...
Chapter 82: I Never Expected You to Be Such a Professor...
"Philosopher's Stone is my good friend Nicolas Flamel's possession. He received word that Voldemort might be after it, so he asked me to protect it on his behalf.
That’s why I brought the Philosopher's Stone to the school and placed it inside the Mirror of Erised."
Dumbledore had to explain the origin of the Philosopher's Stone to Ivan to prevent him from still harboring any thoughts of claiming it.
At the same time, Dumbledore also mentioned that he had obtained Nicolas Flamel's consent to destroy the Philosopher's Stone, in an attempt to quash Ivan's unrealistic ideas.
Although Ivan had known this outcome long before, he still felt a bit of regret.
In his previous life, when he read about the Philosopher's Stone, it didn't seem particularly impressive. But now, facing it in reality, Ivan realized just how great the temptation of infinite wealth and eternal life was for a person.
It was the ultimate dream for the vast majority of people!
Dumbledore noticed the disappointment in Ivan's eyes and felt compelled to remind him.
"Perhaps a young Wizard like you might find it hard to understand, but there are many things in the world more precious than wealth and longevity. For example, the courage to take risks for friends, or the wisdom shown in times of crisis. These are the true treasures.
In comparison, while the power of the Philosopher's Stone is indeed formidable, it is not without its limits. Just like we cannot create things out of thin air."
Dumbledore's blue eyes, framed by his half-moon glasses, stared directly at Ivan. From Ivan's recent actions, he saw many rare qualities.
He had seen too many talented Wizards who became obsessed with power, wealth, authority, and immortality—Grindelwald and Tom Riddle being prime examples.
Even his younger self was not immune to these temptations.
If not for Ariana's death, which brought him to his senses, the Wizarding world might have already been at war with the Muggles under his and Grindelwald's joint control.
Ivan nodded noncommittally. While he wasn’t as fanatically pursuing immortality and power as Voldemort, he also didn’t share Dumbledore's disregard for these things.
Even if the Philosopher's Stone had limitations or side effects, these flaws did not outweigh its virtues. After all, Nicolas Flamel had lived for over six hundred years!
Fortunately, he now had the method to create the Philosopher's Stone. Perhaps in a few years, with the improvement of his alchemy skills, he could have his own Philosopher's Stone.
Because of this, Ivan quickly composed himself, a fact that Dumbledore noticed and found very satisfying. So, he decided to bring up something more uplifting.
"You and Harry defeating Quirrell in the Chamber of Secrets has somehow been leaked. In a few days, the entire school will know about it.
Moreover, your actions have earned Gryffindor the highest house points in the history of the school—860 points, nearly double that of the second-place Slytherin House! Unfortunately, you were unconscious at the time, so you missed seeing how surprised the other young Wizards were."
Ivan rolled his eyes. Apart from the house points, could he get something more substantial?
And who else could have spread the news besides you?
Ivan was well aware that Dumbledore was boosting Harry's reputation, casually adding dozens of points without batting an eye. This time, he had simply been included as an afterthought.
"Alright, now that we've had our moment of happiness, let's talk about something else", Dumbledore said with a smile, shifting the topic.
"Two days ago, when Miss Granger and Mr. Weasley suddenly ran up to me, panting and out of breath, asking me to hurry to the trapdoor to rescue you and Harry, I was almost terrified."
"Fortunately, when I arrived, you were all safe, and you had even defeated Voldemort, who was possessing Quirrell."
"That was Harry's doing, Professor! After touching Voldemort, his body just collapsed." Ivan had no intention of taking credit and tried to downplay his role as much as possible.
"Of course, I know. It was the protective magic in Harry's body, the power of love!" Dumbledore nodded, having seen the scene himself and understanding what had happened. What he wanted to know was something else.
"However, I am more curious about how you managed to hold Voldemort off for so long on your own. I've learned some information from Harry, but it's not thorough enough." Dumbledore said.
Voldemort, though weakened to just a soul, controlling a broken body, was far from an opponent that a first-year young wizard could match.
Additionally, he was very interested in the sudden change that had occurred in Ivan two days ago.
Ivan wanted to ask Dumbledore how Harry had described the events to him, so he could think about how to spin the story next.
But from the look of it, Ivan knew that the wily old man would not tell him. He had to confess some of the information on his own.
Ivan sighed, thinking about what he could say, and then organized his words.
"Professor, have you ever experienced the feeling of suddenly being all-powerful, as if within the range of your magic, you can cast spells without a wand or incantation?"
"Do you mean something like this?" Dumbledore thought for a moment, then lightly placed his empty left hand above a white porcelain cup.
Without any visible movement, the cup suddenly twisted and stretched. A few seconds later, a snowy white Owl appeared before Ivan's eyes.
The Owl's eyes were very lively. Upon finding itself in an unfamiliar place, it tried to fly out of the hospital wing, only to crash into the glass and fall to the ground, occasionally fluttering its wings.
Ivan was amazed. He could tell that this was not a simple Transfiguration spell; otherwise, the Owl would have reverted to a cup and shattered into pieces when it hit the glass.
Dumbledore's display, while different from the long-distance Transfiguration spell Ivan had performed during his magic surge, was based on the same principle.
Without waving a wand or uttering a spell, he had completed a high-level animal transformation using only magic.
Ivan had once thought about challenging Dumbledore in such a miraculous state, but now he realized how overconfident he had been, knowing that Dumbledore could do the same.
"This is just a minor trick and has little practical use in combat." Dumbledore saw Ivan's astonished expression and explained casually.
Is this called a minor trick?
Ivan didn't expect that Professor Dumbledore, who usually appeared humble and conservative, had a penchant for showing off.
In fact, Ivan didn't know that Dumbledore wasn't lying.
While the feeling of casting spells at will with magic was indeed exhilarating, the power of magic was far less potent without a wand.
Especially when he held the Elder wand, one of the Deathly Hallows!
