Chapter 82: Cold Lord: Orochimaru!
Chapter 82: Cold Lord: Orochimaru!
Caw!
Flying high in the sky, Taiyi reminded the person on its back.
Sitting cross-legged on Taiyi’s back, Douhei remained perfectly still, even as the fierce wind whipped around him. He slowly opened his eyes after hearing the call.
He had to seize every opportunity to train his ‘Sensing Natural Energy’ ability to quickly shed dependence on hot springs to enter Sage Mode. This technique could only be used with the help of his own summoned creature.
If he tried to use another summon from the three great sanctuaries, they would likely refuse, or even turn hostile. The relationship between the sanctuaries and their summoners is one of cooperation, not servitude.
He had summoned Taiyi only when he reached the border between the two countries, using it to bypass the Sand Ninja Clan defenses and return to the Land of Fire. He hadn’t ridden it the entire journey.
“Release!”
Douhei jumped down from the sky, releasing the summoning jutsu mid-air, sending Taiyi back to the Hot Spring Valley. Thanks to his abundant chakra and Taiyi’s ability to bear the bulk of the consumption, he could maintain such a long summoning duration without draining himself.
Falling from a few hundred meters high!
If not for a special ninjutsu, he would have turned into a splattered mess.
Next, he headed to the southwestern camp to rendezvous.
He landed early to avoid exposing Taiyi’s capabilities.
Note:
Just because a summon can fly, it doesn’t mean you can use it as a personal transport. Besides the continuous chakra drain, these summons don’t like being used that way.
After landing, Douhei put on his Forehead Protector.
This was near the camp, and he didn’t want to be ‘accidentally’ injured by his own side.
Sure enough, he hadn’t gone a few kilometers before encountering a Konoha Patrol Team.
“Halt! Password!”
The patrol team looked at Douhei warily.
Even seeing his Forehead Protector didn’t ease their suspicion.
“I am Douhei Uchiha, a Chunin from Konoha. I’ve completed my mission and am here to report!”
Douhei identified himself.
If he didn’t, they would have attacked without hesitation.
Better safe than sorry.
That’s how ninjas operate.
Bleeding hearts don’t make good ninjas, except for the protagonist.
“Follow me!”
The patrol team led the way.
The password was known only to the patrol teams, and a newcomer wouldn’t know it. Even recognizing his face wouldn’t help, given the existence of the Transformation Jutsu.
The patrol team escorted Douhei to the camp, a clearing in the forest near a water source. The area was surrounded by tall wooden walls, with watchtowers at each corner.
After handing Douhei over to the camp’s personnel, the patrol team left. Douhei followed the camp personnel to verify his identity.
A while later:
“You can move freely now, but some areas are off-limits…”
Douhei passed the verification smoothly.
Next, he needed to report.
All ninjas in the southwestern war zone were under the command of Orochimaru, the Ninja Army’s ‘commander’. Douhei was no exception and needed to report and be ready for orders.
As he left the tent, he found a ninja waiting for him.
“Douhei Uchiha, Lord Orochimaru wants to see you!”
The ninja stated his purpose.
Ninjas are straightforward like that.
Without hesitation, Douhei followed the ninja to the main tent.
The camp wasn’t large, with tents packed closely together, capable of accommodating around a few thousand people. There were training dummies and throwing targets scattered around, with ninjas practicing their skills.
This is the daily life of a ninja.
Even in the midst of war, every second counts in improving oneself to survive.
Of course, if they were practicing jutsu, they would leave the camp to find a suitable place outside.
Soon, the two arrived at the main tent.
The large red tent was backed by a warehouse, guarded by ninjas. From time to time, ninjas would enter and exit a nearby tent with Mission Scrolls.
Mission Center!
This is where missions like patrols and raids are assigned, and the management of the ninja forces is also handled here.
Thanks to his guide, Tamura didn't need to announce himself. He was led past two gatekeeping ninjas and into the main tent.
Huge!
Inside the main tent, a massive map hung on a wooden frame on one side, while a few prominent wooden tables stood at the front.
The guide gave a slight bow and left the tent.
Now, Tamura was alone with the three people behind the tables piled high with documents.
On the left was a young man with short purple hair, who winked at him as a greeting.
On the right was a pineapple-head, clearly a member of the Nara clan.
This clan was undoubtedly the best support, known for their clear-headedness and high intelligence. Their only flaw was their lazy nature.
The man in the middle, wearing a dark black casual outfit and reading a letter, was none other than the one who had summoned him—Orochimaru.
Orochimaru!
The name alone carried immense weight.
One of the Three Great Shinobi of Konoha, the 'Calm Noble.'
He was also the beloved disciple of the Third Hokage and a Kage-level powerhouse.
While ordinary villagers feared him, the ninjas who had worked with him mostly revered him.
"Lord Orochimaru!"
Tamura spoke up.
Orochimaru put down his letter and lifted his head.
Pale and sinister!
That was the first impression he gave.
Long, black hair cascaded over his shoulders, and his cold, dark eyes seemed as dangerous as a venomous snake.
"I called you here because I have some questions to ask."
Orochimaru's voice was magnetic and charming.
"Yes, Lord Orochimaru!"
Tamura already had a hunch about what was coming.
"Why did the Anbu squad you were with go missing on this mission?"
Orochimaru looked at the young man in front of him.
His first impression was of a reserved and calm boy, with a fearless gaze.
Not bad, kid!
However, he still had to respect the request of his collaborator.
Of course, respect was all he was offering; he made no guarantees about the outcome.
"The mission encountered an ambush by Sand shinobi. We scattered to escape, and I guess I was just lucky!"
Tamura didn't mention that he had wiped out the entire ambush squad.
He wasn't afraid of the Root organization causing trouble.
He had burned their bones to ash. If they could still come back to accuse him, he would accept his fate.
"Is that so!"
Orochimaru didn't comment further, but he had to ask for the record.
"Lord Orochimaru, I suspect that the Anbu squad's disappearance was due to a leak within the village. Here is the evidence!"
Tamura knew that Orochimaru and Danzo were 'friends on the surface,' so he handed over the intelligence scroll to stir up trouble.
If they were going to step on him, he wasn't going to let them off easily.
If he could make them suffer and get some benefits in the process, it would be a win.
Orochimaru took the scroll, read it, and then passed it to the other two in the tent before speaking.
"I will investigate this matter. As for your reward for this mission, you can choose an A-rank jutsu or equivalent resources. What do you need?"
It was a blatant attempt to buy his loyalty.
After seeing the intelligence, Orochimaru knew immediately that this was Danzo's doing, and he had been caught in a vulnerable spot. So, he had to 'pay the price.'
Whatever he paid, he could always get more from Danzo, so he was very generous with his offer.
Orochimaru also began to see Tamura in a different light.
If he had previously viewed him as a 'promising kid,' now he saw him as a 'capable subordinate' who could outmaneuver Danzo's schemes.
Recognizing this as a rare opportunity, Tamura didn't hesitate to make his request.
