Chapter 81: The Passing Typhoon
Chapter 81: The Passing Typhoon
In the evening, Naoki was awakened by the howling wind.
He opened his eyes to see that it was already 5:50.
The TV was broadcasting the weather forecast for the coming days.
A weather reporter, dressed in an OL uniform and wearing black-framed glasses, was diligently presenting the report:
"Typhoon Nu Ying is expected to enter the Padia region at 3 a.m. tonight. Coastal areas are predicted to experience heavy rainfall and occasional strong winds over the next three days due to the influence of Nu Ying. Residents are advised to secure their doors and windows and make the necessary preparations in advance."
A typhoon?
Naoki paused, looking at the affected areas on the screen. Zin Island was right in the path of the storm, which meant his ranch would also be impacted.
The room was filled with an orange glow, and through the window, he could only make out a dark and gloomy sky.
Perhaps tired from playing, the Pokemon that had been outside had all returned indoors.
Frostine had retreated into the cabinet, Mini-Flooft returned to her flower pot, and Bulbasaur yawned, lying on the carpet by the door, even Dragonite had gone back into its Poke Ball.
A rainy day indeed made one feel sleepy.
Naoki gazed out the window for a while, yawned, then turned and looked at the Golurk lying beside him.
The massive Golurk, even in its quadrupedal Sprint Form, loomed over Naoki's rocking chair.
Golurk was fast asleep, its eyes closed with the occasional slight twitch of its eyelids. Its abdomen rose and fell with each breath, and its large head was draped to one side.
It was quite peculiar-looking at first glance, but after spending time with it, Naoki found Golurk rather adorable.
Naoki remained quiet, feeling secure indoors while the wind howled outside and the room glowed with warm light—a stark contrast between the two environments.
He quietly watched Golurk, observing its sleeping posture, then reached out and gently stroked its cheek.
Golurk instantly snapped awake, its golden irises widening, and its face adopting a vigilant expression.
However, upon seeing Naoki beside it, Golurk quickly relaxed and yawned, looking drowsy.
"Ah, Gaah..."
Naoki got up from the rocking chair, picked up Bulbasaur, who had been sleeping on the carpet, and placed it on the bed. Then, he opened the door and took a deep breath, feeling the wind blowing in his face.
"It's going to rain!"
Golurk also stood up, shook its head, and seemed to regain its spirits.
Concerned about strong winds causing damage to the ranch during the night, Naoki didn't immediately start preparing dinner after waking up. Instead, he put on his shoes, took a Poke Ball, and headed to the chicken coop.
Some time had passed since the chicks had hatched, and they now had a good sense of how much to eat.
As a result, there was no need for artificial feeding; the mother hens should be allowed to feed freely.
Naoki took feed from the silo and filled the feeders and waterers with chicken feed and drinking water. Then, he carefully closed the doors and windows of the chicken coop.
Only after making sure nothing was amiss did he leave and head to the Salt House where the Salazzle lived.
The five Salazzle were piled together, looking out the window with worried expressions.
Ordinary Pokemon instinctively felt fear in such oppressive weather.
The forces of nature could be terrifying.
Seeing the Salazzle, Naoki invited, "Why don't you return to your Poke Balls for the night? There will be strong winds early in the morning, and you can come back out once the storm has passed."
"Salazzle!"
The Salazzle agreed without objection, their eyes reflecting their own anxiety about the gloomy, windy, and rainy weather. So, they quickly nodded in assent.
Next, Naoki made his way to the pen where the Ride Sheep were kept.
The three Ride Sheep were lying casually, chewing on the grass, seemingly unaffected by the weather.
Seeing them, Naoki's mind conjured an image of the three sheep facing the storm, blades of grass in their mouths, their combined attack slicing through the typhoon. He even began to wonder if the typhoon stood a chance against the Ride Sheep.
"You don't want your wool to get soaked, do you?" Naoki asked. Seeing the Ride Sheep nod, he continued, "Then spend the night here!"
After recalling the three Ride Sheep, Naoki made his way to the Triple-Honey Bees' hive.
On rainy days, the Triple-Honey Bees wouldn't go out to collect honey, and Naoki had intended to invite them into the house, but they refused.
Naoki pondered for a moment and thought that perhaps staying in their familiar hive gave them a greater sense of security.
With this in mind, Naoki crouched down to inspect the hive for any safety issues.
The hive's four legs were firmly anchored in the soil, so there was no need to worry about it being blown away by the typhoon.
At that moment, the sky opened up and it started to rain.
Seeing this, Naoki left enough honey for the Triple-Honey Bees to eat and then quickly ran back under the roof.
Vespiquen had already arrived and stood at the entrance of its nest, looking down at Naoki, who was getting soaked in the rain.
"Vesp?"
Naoki smiled and said, "It's alright, don't worry. You should go in and get some rest later tonight, too!"
"Ves!"
Vespiquen agreed happily.
With the typhoon preparations complete, Naoki breathed a sigh of relief and prepared to start making dinner.
But before he could even step into the room, he heard Vespiquen's confused voice again: "Vesp?"
Naoki turned and saw Mayor Thomas hurrying toward him, wearing a raincoat.
Naoki was surprised and quickly welcomed him in. "Mayor Thomas, what brings you here?"
Thomas didn't go inside, as his shoes were muddy, and he didn't want to dirty the floor.
He stood under the roof, looking around at the entire ranch, and said between breaths, "I won't come in. I just came to let you know that the typhoon is coming, and you need to prepare! Bring all your Pokemon and animals indoors, lock the doors and windows, and make sure you have enough feed ready!"
He had seen the weather forecast earlier and thought that since Naoki had come from another region, he might not have experience dealing with typhoons. So, he rushed over to notify him.
Hearing Mayor Thomas' words, Naoki felt touched, and he smiled and nodded. "Don't worry, I've already prepared everything!"
"That's good," Mayor Thomas nodded. "I don't have any other business here. Since you've taken care of everything, I won't keep you. I need to get back!"
As he spoke, he released a Motoxike from its Poke Ball and rode off in a hurry, having come and gone in a rush.
Naoki stood under the roof, watching the elderly man depart, and then shook his head slightly with a touch of emotion.
Everyone was so kind!
Whether it was the Pokemon or the humans.
From Mayor Thomas, who had shown him great care, to the generous and open-hearted Zack, the passionate and patient ranch elder, and the diligent and hardworking Keri, they were all good people.
Speaking of Zack, he should have come by to collect the goods today.
The Ride Sheep were in their lactation CD, and they hadn't gathered enough salt from the Saltrock yet. The only thing they had to sell was the pile of mushrooms growing in the cave behind the ranch.
Earlier in the day, Naoki had picked those mushrooms and placed them in the shipping box.
Thinking of this, Naoki checked the shipping box and, as expected, found the money Zack had left behind.
He put the money away and then went inside to start preparing dinner for everyone.
The rain outside the window grew heavier, gradually forming a curtain of water. In contrast to the gloomy and gloomy outdoors, the wooden house was filled with a warm and harmonious atmosphere.
