Chapter 809: Let Them Retreat
Chapter 809: Let Them Retreat
On the Grand Line, the Pirate Ship continued its navigation.
A full day had passed since their journey began when Kuro received a Wanted Poster from a passing news bird. He now lay on a lounge chair on the deck, one hand holding the freshly printed Wanted Poster while the other cradled his head. He stared at the bold image of himself standing atop a stone pillar, arms crossed defiantly, face tilted upward in arrogant pride, surrounded by a barrage of weapons aimed directly at his chest.
The caption read: [Heavenly King] Gilgamesh, Bounty: Three Hundred Million Belly—Dead or Alive.
"Tch, impressive."
Kuro flicked the poster dismissively before tossing it aside. Headquarters had wasted no time issuing this. As for the name, he’d randomly borrowed it from one of his fallen allies. After all, standing on a pillar surrounded by weapons demanded a title that matched the spectacle.
"I’ve finally got my own Wanted Poster", Lida sighed as she examined hers. "Back in the day, I did everything to avoid getting one."
She’d once navigated the Grand Line alone, moving cautiously. Back then, even glimpsing her features was rare. Yet her elusive reputation had birthed a legend—a whispered tale of hidden treasure. She’d leaned into the myth, using it to lure pirates into traps, turning their greed against them for resources. Few ever spotted her, especially in the East Blue, where only the Red Nose and Kuro had managed to corner her.
The Red Nose had fled after she’d pummeled him, leaving behind supplies. But meeting Kuro had been her true reckoning—her pirating days ended the moment he recruited her.
Now, bounty or not, she was Navy through and through. Yet nostalgia lingered. Pirates without bounties were nobodies. Two hundred million Belly once marked her as a titan in the East Blue, a feared sovereign.
Her epithet: ‘Gourmet King’ Lolita—a name her brother once used, now resurrected.
Nearby, Klah grimaced at his own poster. It was outdated, a portrait from five or six years ago. The only change? His bounty had jumped from over ten million to one hundred million. ‘Black Cat King’ Klah—the title added a “King,” but little else.
Wanted Posters rarely noted affiliations. Pirates were chaotic—today a crewmate, tomorrow a captain. The Navy’s intelligence teams refused to label such transient roles. Even the Four Emperors’ epithets, like Kaido’s ‘Beast King’, remained unchanged regardless of allegiance. Smoker’s poster showed half his face obscured by smoke, sunglasses and jutte in hand—a Vice Admiral’s grimace. Tashigi’s disguise as Navigator of the Flying Rudder Pirate Crew kept her anonymity.
"Hey, Kuro, trouble ahead", Smoker announced, descending from the mast in a swirl of smoke. He’d replaced the Navy’s scout earlier, using his ability to shift into smoke for aerial surveillance. "Looks like a fight. One of our Warships is trapped, surrounded by two ships."
Kuro sat up abruptly. "Two ships? You sure it’s an attack and not a chase?"
Warships and Pirate Ships were incomparable. Most pirates relied on small, fast vessels to evade Navy pursuit. Even patrol Warships dwarfed them in size. Pirates generally prioritized escape over combat—attacking Navy officers only inflated bounties. Only fools sought unnecessary battles, especially in the New World.
"Definitely an encirclement", Smoker confirmed.
Kuro barked an order. The ship veered course, steaming toward the distant cannon fire. Explosions echoed as they neared—a Warship circled by two Pirate Ships, their identical flags snapping in the wind.
"Telescope."
Kuro snatched the device, focusing on the chaos. The Warship’s cannons roared, but the agile Pirate Ships danced out of range. When shells struck home, two pirates deflected them effortlessly—powerful enough to challenge a Warship.
"Tch, which Branch?" Kuro handed the telescope to Smoker.
Tashigi answered, "Probably G-2 Branch. They’re not far from here."
"Signal them. Tell them to retreat", Kuro ordered.
