Chapter 808: Reporting
Chapter 808: Reporting
"Recently, avoid eating beef."
Albert frowned slightly as he watched the evening news on TV and said to his grandfather, Luke, who was reading the newspaper and playing with the cat.
"We haven't eaten beef in a long time, and no one dares to eat it now," Luke replied.
Sansa placed a plate of cut fruit on the table and looked at the news broadcast, where the announcer was struggling to report on mad cow disease.
"Ever since the outbreak of mad cow disease in Britain in May, the government still hasn't found the cause, and there's a trend of the symptoms spreading to other countries," the announcer said.
"They must have found the cause, but they're just not telling the truth," Albert said as he popped a piece of pineapple into his mouth. It tasted pretty good.
Pineapples used to be expensive in Europe, affordable only to the wealthy. As a result, many rich Europeans enjoyed eating pineapples or candied pineapple.
Of course, they liked to cook pineapples as a dish.
At Albert's strong suggestion, the Anderson family had changed the way they ate pineapples. Instead of cooking them, they now soaked the pineapple chunks in saltwater for half an hour or more before eating them as fruit, eliminating the sour and bitter taste.
"Feed?" Luke was surprised and didn't understand why Albert would say that. Could he know something? But... what could Albert possibly know? He spent most of his time in the wizarding world.
"Cannibalism," Albert said, recalling the cause of mad cow disease. "I remember reading somewhere that certain indigenous people on an island had a custom of consuming the internal organs of the deceased, and they exhibited very similar and severe symptoms."
"Must you say it so terrifyingly?" Nia, her hair still damp from her shower, walked out of the bathroom wearing a light pink sleep dress. She dried her hair with a towel and picked up a piece of pineapple from the plate, asking, "Do you have any more of that beauty potion from last time?"
"Have you used up all of them already?" Albert was surprised. He remembered preparing quite a lot of those potions for the family.
"Mom took them all. She told me to ask you for more," Nia said as she sat down next to Albert, toweling her hair. Her face, a mix of white and pink, showed a hint of helplessness. Her beauty potions were running out, and girls were always particularly concerned about their appearance.
"I still have some left. You can take them for now, and I'll make more for you next time I have the chance," Albert said, sensing a faint rose fragrance wafting from Nia's shampoo and shower gel.
Isabelle's shampoo had a hint of lilac in it, which she had grown fond of during her last trip to France, prompting Albert to buy a whole case for her.
Nia leaned forward, her face close to Albert's as she examined him up and down.
"What is it?" Albert asked, gently pushing Nia's small face away with his hand.
"I'm just curious that you would use this kind of thing," Nia said, reaching out to tug at Albert's cheeks, as if checking if someone was disguising themselves as him.
"Of course, I care about my appearance too. Now that I can be a handsome guy, why would I want to be an ugly monster?" Albert said.
He did use beauty potions too, applying a little while washing his face. The effects were quite good. At the very least, he didn't have to worry about acne anymore, a common problem for young men and women of seventeen or eighteen. No one liked having their face covered in pimples.
In a sense, Albert resembled a pretty boy more than Diggory, though no one dared to call him that.
Changing the subject, Albert asked, "Aren't you going to use a hairdryer? Drying your hair with that will make it easier, especially since you're about to go to sleep."
"Aren't you going to take a shower?" Nia asked in return.
"Yeah."
Albert headed for the bathroom, intending to take a quick rinse to combat the mugginess of the summer night. As he soaked in the bathtub, he could hear Nia and Sansa talking outside, discussing the news on TV and how the school had also banned beef from meals.
"This era is truly frightening," Albert sighed softly, recalling that mad cow disease could be transmitted to humans.
Although milk didn't seem to be affected, the whole situation had ruined his appetite for drinking milk in the mornings.
When Albert finished his bath and stepped out of the bathroom, the TV was still reporting on mad cow disease, with an expert enthusiastically discussing the topic with the broadcaster.
To be honest, Albert instinctively disliked the term "expert."
In his previous life, there was a saying that "experts are dogs," and those who appeared on television screens were often of that sort.
"Mad Cow Disease can be transmitted to humans." Albert moved Tom aside and said to the other three, who were watching TV, "Just listen to the next expert interview program. These guys are probably nine out of nine who are paid, or the government is throwing them out to calm the situation."
"Really?" Nia shuddered involuntarily, "What about us before..."
"Don't worry, it's generally not that easy to get infected. Just don't touch it in the future." Albert reached out and patted Nia's head, comforting her softly.
"What's the reason?" Luke put down the newspaper and frowned, "Why is there a large-scale outbreak of this symptom in the country?"
"It is said that feed merchants mixed some crushed bits of cow internal organs and body parts in the feed to provide protein for vegetable cows." Albert picked up a kitten from under his feet, playing with its ears as he said, "This is probably what led to the source of this disaster."
"Those people would do anything for money." Luke looked angry. Nowadays, ordinary folks are very anxious when they talk about this, and no one dares to eat beef anymore.
"It's no use getting angry here. Obviously, the government doesn't want ordinary people to know about this, so they sent out experts to calm the storm." Shana said to the two, "You should go to bed early, too."
"Yeah."
After the two elders returned to the master bedroom, Albert turned off the TV and said to Nia beside him, "Okay, you go to bed too. Staying up late is not good for your skin."
"Don't think I don't know what you're up to." Nia pouted, "Someone always sneaks out for dates at night."
"I lock the door at night." Albert said.
"The last time I was looking for the cat, you weren't in the bedroom." Nia's eyes sparkled with triumph, "Actually, you can just bring her to live here for a few days. Grandpa Luke and Grandma Shansa would probably be very happy for you to bring your girlfriend back."
"Isabelle plans to publish a book, and I occasionally go over to give her some advice." Albert coughed lightly, "After all, I have a share in that book."
"I thought you would bite your tongue and not admit it, thinking that your cute little sister was tricking you."
"You forget, I can easily see through other people's thoughts." Albert reached out and ruffled Nia's hair, smiling, "If you have something to say, just say it."
"I saw a dress in a magazine that I want to be my birthday present." Nia somehow got her hands on a magazine and pointed to the beautiful dress on it, asking Albert.
"Your birthday is still a few months away." Albert reminded her.
"Just consider it an advance." Nia said.
"Overspending is not good." Albert reached for the Prophet's Daily on the table and looked at Nia, asking, "Hebe didn't give you an allowance of ten thousand, did she? You've spent it all?"
"I used it to try out some funds and stocks. Uncle Charlie helped me set up an account." Nia pouted, "So, I'm out of money now, and I can only ask you for an advance on my birthday gift."
"You're going to spend all your money." Albert was speechless, because Nia wasn't lying. She had indeed been studying economics, finance, and how to make money lately, although most of the time she was losing a little.
"You have to spend money to learn from your mistakes. Not everyone can predict the future like you." Nia said righteously, "I need to gain experience and understand the situation."
"That's true, but if you want to try and make mistakes, you can go East with Heber. It's cheaper to make mistakes over there, and it's relatively easier to make money, especially with startup capital. If you find the right direction, it's easy to make money, even if you don't understand anything later, you can still make money lying down."
"No wonder Mom ran over there." Nia suddenly understood why Daisy had gone East, if it was really as Albert said.
"Okay, birthday present." Albert looked at the price of the dress in the magazine and said to Nia, "It's been a long time since we went shopping together."
"Oh, I knew Albert was the best!" Nia exclaimed excitedly, and even hugged Albert and kissed his cheek, "Tomorrow I'll tell Grandpa Luke about going shopping."
"You're really taking advantage of me." Albert shook his head.
After returning to his bedroom, Albert tried to contact Isabelle through the two-way mirror. As he waited for a response from the other side, he picked up today's copy of the Prophet's Daily and flipped through it, but his attention was suddenly caught by an article in the paper, so much so that he momentarily ignored Isabelle's voice.
This is impossible! Little Dwarf Star Peter is actually dead?
