Chapter 807: Grandpa's Cards
Chapter 807: Grandpa's Cards
Since he was a child, You Xuan had always thought that Grandpa Kurogami was an extraordinary person.
From his first appearance, this elderly man seemed harmless, as if he had no real skills, and his greatest role was to be the "Millennium Hostage" to advance the plot.
From the first episode, he was beaten up by the Kaiba CEO and hospitalized. Shortly after returning home, his soul was taken hostage by Bercas, making him a plot NPC throughout the entire series. Grandpa's contribution to the story's longevity, spanning over 200 episodes, cannot be understated and should be credited for at least a third of the show's success.
However, upon closer inspection, one would realize that Grandpa is also quite extraordinary.
Setting aside his Duel King-worthy hairstyle, similar to his grandson's, Grandpa casually gave his grandson a gift that was a super artifact from three thousand years ago, which contained a boss-level ultimate ruler.
Furthermore, there are only four Blue-Eyes White Dragons in the entire world, and Grandpa had one of them, which he acquired from a small card shop owner. This prompted the Kaiba CEO to offer an entire box of cards in exchange for it.
During Yugi's duel with the Kaiba CEO using Grandpa's deck, we also discovered that the deck contained the epic God Card, the five-headed dragon Exodia, the Forbidden One. The Egyptian arc confirmed that this was no coincidence. Grandpa was also a reincarnation of a priest from three thousand years ago, and Exodia was his familiar back then. Grandpa was a prominent figure who could even challenge the Great Evil God Zorc face-to-face.
Of course, as the saying goes, true greatness lies in simplicity. Grandpa Kurogami has long since retired from the dueling world and now runs a small card shop, earning a modest living and enjoying his retirement.
"Oh, it's been a while since we last saw City-Within!" Grandpa enthusiastically served tea.
"How's Mai doing?"
"Ahaha, she's doing fine, as usual."
"How can she be doing fine as usual?" Grandpa asked earnestly. "When are you two planning to get married?"
City-Within nearly choked on his tea and coughed for a while before responding.
"Speaking of which, this young man here is the current Duel King." Grandpa Kurogami smiled and nodded repeatedly, "He's indeed a talented individual."
"I'd say he's more like a model." City-Within muttered from behind.
Grandpa Kurogami turned around in confusion, "What?"
"Ahaha, nothing. I was just saying how good the tea is."
City-Within forced a dry laugh and took a big sip of tea, then changed the subject, "By the way, what's up with that guy Yugi? Any news?"
"Nope." Grandpa Kurogami smiled, "Well, he's still on his journey of self-improvement."
"Huh? You mean Yugi-san?"
Decade was full of curiosity about his idol.
"Does Yugi-san still need to improve?"
"Of course! Everyone can always improve, and that includes Yugi."
Grandpa Kurogami laughed and stroked his beard.
"Yugi still has a long way to go in his journey. He's currently traveling the world, hoping to make further progress."
"Haha, that guy Yugi never stops." City-Within sighed.
"Yes."
Grandpa Kurogami looked out the window, lost in thought for a moment, and muttered to himself.
"After all, that kid once said he had a promise to keep, no matter what. Perhaps he's still struggling to fulfill it even now."
City-Within fell silent.
As a first-time visitor, Decade, being a fan of Yugi, didn't know much about their past, so he didn't fully understand what Grandpa was referring to.
As a close friend and gaming buddy, Jonouchi instantly understood what Sugoroku was referring to.
The promise Sugoroku spoke of was about Yugi and Atem's shared victory and the undefeated legend of the Duelist World.
That year, during their farewell battle, Yugi proved to Atem that he had become a capable Duelist who could stand on his own. From then on, even if he was alone, Yugi vowed to protect this legend.
"That Yugi, he's not bad either," Jonouchi muttered, finishing his tea.
"Wow! Amazing, they're all rare cards!"
Judai, leaning on the counter, exclaimed in awe.
"Hahaha, of course. Grandpa doesn't have much else, but I have plenty of good cards. I can assure you that," Sugoroku boasted.
As soon as he said this, Sugoroku straightened up, like a student praised for his prized toy collection.
"Since you're a friend of Jonouchi, I'll give you a good deal in his name."
Hearing this, Jonouchi immediately puffed out his chest, looking proud.
The flawless version is on 69+Book_Bar! 6=9+Book_Bar First Release.
Then they heard Sugoroku say, "A flat rate, twelve percent off should be good."
Jonouchi almost fell off his chair. "Huh? Why? Do I have to pay extra for my reputation?"
"Hahaha, just kidding," Sugoroku laughed. "Wait a moment. I have more prized cards inside; you can pick whatever you like."
Hearing about the rare cards, Yun also became interested and followed Judai inside to browse.
Logically, a small street-side store like Grandpa's couldn't compare to the resources of International Fantasy Society or Kaiba Corporation, industry leaders. But then, Yun remembered that Grandpa was also a hidden master with a wealth of knowledge.
After all, this seemingly unassuming store had sold Blue-Eyes White Dragon and Exodia, the Forbidden One, and other God Cards. Additionally, there were countless rare cards from Yugi's collection, like the entire Black Magician family, the Chaos Warrior series, Gaia, and Dragon Ruler Knight, to name a few.
So, this place might indeed be a hidden gem with the potential for rare and out-of-print treasures.
However, after browsing, Yun found that while there were some good cards, there weren't many that stood out. After all, he had been to many large company warehouses, and his standards had risen.
There were quite a few rare cards from the limited series Yugi had used, like the Black Magician support cards, such as Thousand Knives and Black Magician.
However, despite having support cards, there was no Black Magician itself. So, while these were rare cards, they only held collection value if purchased.
Yun, however, discovered a plant-themed deck that piqued his interest.
Or rather, it wasn't a deck but a few high-quality individual cards with a plant-type theme.
For example, there was "Lonefire Blossom." Once per turn, by tributing a face-up Plant-type monster, any Plant-type monster could be Special Summoned from the deck.
Needless to say, this was an incredibly powerful effect for a relatively unpopular type like plants. If this effect were on a popular type, like Dragons, it would be undeniably broken.
Additionally, he found another classic card that caught his attention, a Plant-type field spell he remembered being used for various unconventional tricks in the past.
Field Spell - Black Garden.
