Chapter 805: Fudge: What? The Dark Lord is Attacking?
Chapter 805: Fudge: What? The Dark Lord is Attacking?
The sudden appearance of the black Giant Serpent caught the Aurors completely off guard. However, after a brief moment of shock, dozens of Wizards quickly joined forces, launching a barrage of spells that struck the Giant Serpent's tough scales.
The black Giant Serpent immediately let out a series of hisses, its skin pockmarked from the magical attacks. Half of its head was blown to pieces by the Explosion Charm.
However, what they didn't expect was that, even after sustaining what should have been a fatal injury, the black Giant Serpent did not disappear. Instead, plumes of black smoke quickly emerged from the exposed flesh, rapidly repairing the damaged body.
This was a purely magical summon, and the black Giant Serpent would remain almost indestructible until its magic was completely depleted.
While the black Giant Serpent wreaked havoc among the crowd, Ivan was not idle.
After felling a few Aurors who had tried to gang up on him, Ivan swung his wand with all his might. The golden statues in the center of the hall exploded, sending countless metal chunks, each the size of a human head, flying like flaming cannonballs through the Magic Hall.
Several supporting pillars, used as cover, crumbled under the intense bombardment. The massive overhead bulletin board soon wobbled and crashed to the ground. The protective rings, which the Aurors and Beaters relied on for their safety, were easily shattered by the flaming debris.
After the initial assault, nearly half of the resistance in the Magic Hall lay unconscious or buried under the rubble.
The remaining Aurors were all injured. The line that had barely managed to hold back the Death Eaters was now completely shattered!
In the almost despairing atmosphere, more and more people chose to drop their wands and kneel in surrender.
In contrast, the Death Eaters were emboldened. Dark Magic spells rained down, forcing the Aurors to retreat. Under Ivan's leadership, they had breached the core of the Ministry of Magic in just three minutes.
...
Meanwhile, in the meeting hall on the second underground floor, Fudge, who had temporarily interrupted the meeting, grabbed the Auror who had come to report and angrily shouted.
"What did you say? The Dark Lord is leading the Death Eaters here? Nonsense! That's impossible! You're lying!"
"All the Death Eaters are locked up in Azkaban, guarded by two hundred Dementors. The Dark Lord has been dead for over a decade; he won't come back, never!" Fudge's eyes were red, and he snarled.
"But it's the truth, Minister of Magic!" Kingsley Shacklebolt forcefully broke free from Fudge's grasp and coldly continued. "Clearly, the Dementors at Azkaban have betrayed us and released all the Death Eaters!"
"Furthermore, I must inform you, Minister of Magic Fudge, that according to reports, the Dark Lord has already broken through the Courtyard's defenses and is heading this way..."
"In other words, they'll be here soon!"
Kingsley Shacklebolt's words dripped with sarcasm as he watched Fudge, who was still trying to deny the reality, with growing frustration.
He had warned Fudge that the Dementors were unreliable, but the Minister had stubbornly ignored the signs of their abnormal behavior. As a result, Voldemort had led the Azkaban prisoners to attack, and they were completely unprepared.
Upon hearing that the Dark Lord was on his way, Fudge was stunned. The high-ranking officials of the Ministry of Magic were also thrown into a panic, shouting in anger or fear.
"What kind of joke is this?! There are over a hundred Aurors in the Ministry of Magic. Where are they? Why didn't they stop those Death Eaters?"
"What about the Protective Arrays? Why haven't they been activated yet?"
"Right, Dumbledore... where's Dumbledore? There might still be time. Quickly, find someone to inform him to come here!" the Head of the Department of International Magical Cooperation shouted loudly.
The entire Meeting Hall immediately turned into a chaotic mess, with everyone discussing the response plan in a cacophony of voices. In the end, they all agreed to retreat temporarily, aiming to preserve as much of their fighting force as possible.
After all, it was better to lose territory but preserve lives; as long as they were alive, the Wizarding World still had hope!
"But we have no way out, Masters. All the fireplaces are sealed, and the Anti-Apparition Array covers the entire Ministry of Magic. We're probably trapped and won't receive any support!" Kingsley Shacklebolt cruelly shattered Fudge's and others' hopes of escape.
Now everyone was trapped inside the Ministry of Magic. In Kingsley Shacklebolt's view, the only way to survive was to fight to the death, storm the ninth underground level to the Department of Mysteries, eliminate the traitors there, activate the Protective Arrays, and rally all the remaining resistance forces. Only then could they hope to drive the Dark Lord out of the Ministry of Magic...
"Damn it, it must be Ernie who betrayed us. That explains why she didn't attend the meeting today!" Rufus Scrimgeour said angrily.
"And Pierce, I didn't see him today either!" Fudge added, his anger raging.
"Enough, this isn't the time to discuss that. We must act quickly!" Arthur Weasley hurriedly interrupted, his expression filled with worry.
Voldemort's attack on the Ministry of Magic was too sudden, giving him a very bad feeling.
The Order of the Phoenix had an undercover agent within the Dark Lord's circle, yet Snape hadn't given them any warning about such a significant operation. This was clearly very unreasonable.
Could it be that Snape's cover had been blown?
Or had Snape betrayed them, and that was why he hadn't reported Voldemort's major offensive?
The more Arthur Weasley thought about it, the more alarmed he became.
They hadn't been able to contact Dumbledore for months. If Snape was a traitor, Sirius Black's suspicions might be true: Dumbledore might have already been assassinated by Snape. If that were the case, they would have no hope of a final counterattack.
After venting his frustration, Fudge regained some composure and said calmly, "No, we don't need to go to the Department of Mysteries. We can go directly to my office as the Minister of Magic. The fireplace there is connected to the outside world independently and can't be sealed. We can use it to reach London... and then gather our forces for a counterattack!"
While reclaiming the Department of Mysteries would lift the Anti-Apparition Ward over the Ministry of Magic, it was on the ninth underground level, which was too far away.
If they went there directly, they would likely run into Death Eaters or even the Dark Lord. It was safer to go to the Minister of Magic's office, which was only one floor away.
The high-ranking officials of the Ministry of Magic breathed a sigh of relief. Knowing they had a way out put them at ease.
Kingsley Shacklebolt was nearly driven to the brink of fury. He couldn't believe that in such a critical moment, Fudge, the Minister of Magic, was first thinking about how to escape.
If they ran, what about the Aurors who were still fighting to the death?
There were over three hundred Wizards in the Ministry of Magic. Were they all to be abandoned?
