Chapter 800: A Strand of Silvery Hair
Chapter 800: A Strand of Silvery Hair
"Who are you?!"
Butterfly Ninja, Konan, spun around abruptly, her eyes fixed on Feng Ye with utmost vigilance. Her hand rested on the hilt of her sword, ready to draw it at a moment's notice!
Although she couldn't sense any demonic aura from Feng Ye, there was no doubt that he was an extremely dangerous individual who could potentially threaten her and her sister, Nagato's, safety.
Nagato's eyes flickered, and her smile gradually faded as she regarded Feng Ye with a calm gaze. After scrutinizing him for a few seconds, she asked in a measured tone, "May I ask what you intend to do with that child?"
Feng Ye turned his gaze to the little girl, Yahiko, at his side and gently ran his hand through her hair as he replied, "Observation and experimentation."
Yahiko's situation was unique.
Perhaps she was the only truly meaningful existence to Feng Ye in this world.
The reason lay in her state of being. After enduring an incredibly painful childhood, Yahiko entered a peculiar state where she lacked any human emotions and ceased to react to her surroundings, yet she still retained her self-awareness.
It was a strange condition.
Even when hungry, she wouldn't initiate the action of eating unless instructed to do so by someone else, much like a lifeless puppet.
This state of hers resonated with a challenge Feng Ye had been facing due to his growing power and the passage of time—the slow erosion of his human emotions.
If he continued on this path, he feared he might eventually become like Yahiko.
However, unlike the fragile Yahiko, Feng Ye possessed god-like power. Should he reach that state, he would become an emotionless deity, akin to an embodiment of rules, observing the world he possessed without any sense of self or initiative.
That was why Yahiko held significance to him. Observing her and conducting experiments could help Feng Ye find a way to stabilize his emotions and personality.
"Experimentation?"
Nagato's eyes flickered, and she asked in a steady voice, "May I inquire as to the nature of these experiments?"
Feng Ye was clearly no ordinary person, and if he truly intended to adopt the little girl, Nagato wouldn't hesitate to entrust Yahiko to his care.
However, the word 'experiment' was never a positive term in any context, and the reason she patiently inquired about the specifics of his experiments was purely due to her gentle nature and the enigmatic action Feng Ye had displayed earlier.
"I will nurture her and bestow upon her great power," Feng Ye replied with a smile. "As you can see, she barely possesses a sense of self at the moment, like a puppet. I want to know if she can reclaim her inner self once she acquires immense power."
Nagato's eyes widened slightly in surprise at Feng Ye's words.
Even Konan, standing beside her, paused for a moment.
Feng Ye's idea of an 'experiment' was somewhat unexpected. They had anticipated something more along the lines of cruel acts like human experimentation or poison testing, not this.
Nagato's gaze lowered slightly as she fell into thought, while Konan maintained her vigilant stare, her eyes scrutinizing Feng Ye.
After a moment, Nagato lifted her eyes to meet Feng Ye's gaze once more and said seriously, "I can see that you don't intend to harm the child, but... I'm sorry, I still can't entrust her to you."
His words earlier were likely not a lie, as Feng Ye had no reason to deceive them. He could have easily fabricated a more plausible story if he wanted to.
Even so, whether it was to raise the child or guide her growth, he ultimately viewed Yahiko as an experiment.
Feng Ye remained calm and smiled, "In that case, let's make a bet. If you win, I'll leave and let you take the child. But if you lose, you'll accept my proposal."
Butterfly Ninja, Konan, took a deep breath and gripped the hilt of her sword tightly. "Sister has already said that no matter what, we can't let you take that child away!"
Feng Ye maintained his smile as he glanced at Konan and then turned to Kanao.
Kanao softly exhaled and regained her gentle smile, "What kind of bet is it?"
"Sister..."
Konan turned to look at Kanao.
Clearly, Kanao's compromise took her by surprise.
"What harm is there in listening? Don't be so hasty, Konan. Stay calm at all times," Kanao replied with a smile.
"It's simple," Feng Ye said as he raised a hand and plucked a strand of his silvery hair. He held one end of the hair between his fingers and let it dangle in front of his face. With a smile, he said, "All you need to do is cut this single strand of hair with your sword, and you win."
Both Kanao and Konan were stunned.
Konan quickly recovered and glared at Feng Ye with anger flashing in her eyes. "What kind of bet is this? Are you toying with us?!"
"No," Feng Ye said seriously. "I'm being sincere. This is my proposal. If you can do it, I'll leave immediately and won't bother you again."
The sincerity in Feng Ye's eyes caused Konan to pause, her gaze shifting between the silvery strand of hair and Feng Ye himself.
Winning by cutting a single strand of hair...
This wasn't a fair bet; it was absurd.
But...
Feng Ye was serious!
His eyes and expression conveyed his genuine intent.
That's why Konan and Kanao were momentarily taken aback, their gazes fixing on the strand of hair between Feng Ye's fingers.
If Feng Ye wasn't joking or trying to deceive them, then this strand of hair must be more than just a simple hair. It likely contained some sort of strange power!
But...
Regardless, they were pillars of the Demon Slayer Corps!
Although Konan lacked physical strength due to her small stature and didn't have much confidence in her cutting ability, her Nichirin Blade didn't even have a blade, only a sharp tip, which was not suitable for cutting.
Kanao, on the other hand, was different. She was taller, had a more perfect physique, and possessed greater strength. She could cut through the necks of demons, and among the Twelve Kizuki, only the Upper Moons could surpass her.
She had even slain a Lower Moon of the Twelve Kizuki.
"If that's the bet, then... let me give it a try."
After a moment of surprise, Kanao smiled gently.
If Feng Ye were a demon, she wouldn't compromise, no matter what. She would reject any bet or attempt at reconciliation. It would be a battle to the death.
But Feng Ye wasn't a demon.
So she maintained her gentleness.
She could accept a bet, at least for a little while.
Although she suspected that Feng Ye's hair held something unusual, as a pillar of the Demon Slayer Corps, she knew she couldn't possibly fail to cut a single strand of hair.
"Alright."
Feng Ye smiled and released the hair, gently blowing it toward Kanao with a soft breath.
The silvery strand of hair drifted gracefully through the air, floating toward Kanao.
