Chapter 80: Infiltration
Chapter 80: Infiltration
Night had fallen.
Thick clouds obscured the silver moon in the night sky.
The moonlight was faint, like a delicate ink painting in the darkness, barely visible.
About five or six hundred meters from the southern gate of Firefly City, in a dug-out trench, three scouts lay hidden, keeping a watchful eye on the distant city gate.
"This Firefly City is like a tortoise shell. We've been attacking for so many days and still can't breach it. It's exhausting."
"Ah, it all comes down to the Black Rock Leopards. Those monsters are too tough. I heard they were created by wizards as puppets."
"Tsk, wizards, you say? I heard that because there's a wizard in the Flashlight Fief, the Marquis sent two Earls to join the assault, making it such a grand operation."
"Are wizards really as powerful as the legends say?"
The scout on the left, half-doubting, asked. After a while, he noticed his two companions hadn't responded. He turned his head in confusion and was shocked to find them lying motionless on the ground.
"Oh no!"
His heart tightened as he realized something was wrong. Just as he was about to spring up, he felt a sharp pain in his neck, and his consciousness plunged into eternal darkness.
Su Nan slowly withdrew his hand, his face calm and expressionless.
With his physical attributes now on par with a peak knight, he could easily and silently dispatch three scouts who weren't even knights, without using any magic.
After a careful inspection of the dead scouts' appearances and builds, Su Nan murmured a spell.
Under the moonlight, his form and features rapidly changed, transforming him into an exact replica of one of the dead scouts.
Even his clothes and weapons matched perfectly.
[Magic Disguise]!
This spell changes the caster's appearance, including clothing and equipment.
It is somewhat similar to [Polymorph].
However, [Magic Disguise] only changes the appearance; even if the caster transforms into a creature, they do not gain that creature's abilities.
Additionally, human spellcasters can only transform into humans, humanoid beings, or other bipedal creatures that resemble humans, but not into other races.
After completing the transformation, Su Nan woke the other two scouts and controlled them with [Charm Person].
He then cast [Silent Image], making himself appear injured.
With everything prepared, Su Nan ordered the two scouts to carry him and hurry back to the Storm Army's camp.
The Storm Army's camp was brightly lit.
The light extended for a hundred meters beyond the camp, making it impossible for anyone to approach unnoticed.
"Stop!"
The guard soldiers immediately spotted the approaching trio and ordered them to halt.
"We were attacked by the enemy, and one of our brothers is injured!"
The guard captain signaled his men to be on alert, then approached to inspect the situation. He quickly recognized the three as the scouts sent to monitor the city gate. Seeing the blood-soaked wounds on the injured man, his suspicions were somewhat alleviated.
"Did the enemy leave the city?"
"No, Firefly City didn't open its gates. The attackers were likely just enemy scouts."
The guard captain breathed a sigh of relief as long as the enemy hadn't launched a full assault.
However, to be safe, he instructed one of his men, "Ham, go report this to Lord Thomas."
"Yes, Captain!" The soldier responded and hurried away.
The guard captain turned to the three scouts and waved them forward. "Go on, take your injured comrade to the medical tent."
The two scouts thanked him and hurriedly carried their 'injured companion' toward the medical tent deep within the camp.
Seeing this, the guard captain couldn't help but marvel at the strong bond of camaraderie among the three.
In the center of the camp, the command tent.
Inside the spacious tent, a group of people sat around a table.
Storm Earl sat at the head, his face dark and silent.
The other officers, eyes lowered, remained equally quiet.
After a long moment, Storm Earl finally broke the silence with a hoarse voice.
"It's been five days. With such a significant numerical advantage, why haven't you managed to capture Firefly City yet? Give me a reasonable explanation!"
Several older generals twitched their eyes, unable to hold back their silent curses.
Numerical advantage my ass.
While their forces outnumbered those of Firefly City, the latter had the elite Black Rock Cavalry.
Not to mention, those five hundred Black Rock Leopards were more effective in defending the city than ten thousand soldiers.
If not for their own considerable number of knights, the Flashlight Baron might have already led his forces out to attack them.
The new Storm Earl's military prowess was clearly lacking, far inferior to that of his older brothers.
But then again, if he weren't so mediocre and easy to control, the Golden Rock Marquis wouldn't have supported him.
Realizing he might have overreacted, the Storm Earl took a deep breath to calm his anger and said coldly, "Koy the coward has been hiding in the city, refusing to engage us in open battle. Can we bypass Firefly City and directly attack Flashlight City to force him out?"
The generals' lips twitched even more at his words.
One of them finally couldn't hold back and spoke up, "My Lord, if we don't capture Firefly City first, and it launches a surprise attack from behind while we're assaulting Flashlight City, the consequences would be catastrophic!"
The Storm Earl's expression froze, realizing he had asked a foolish question. Annoyed, he demanded, "If we can't do this or that, what's your plan then?"
The generals exchanged glances.
After a long moment, one of the older generals suggested, "My Lord, we don't need to rush. Time is on our side. If we wait for Winter Frost Earl to capture Chill City and join us, we can combine our forces and easily breach Firefly City."
The Storm Earl's face darkened.
He understood the logic, but if they did that, the credit for capturing Flashlight Fief would largely go to Winter Frost Earl.
He was not about to let Winter Frost Earl take the glory!
With a grim face, he rejected the idea, "No, we must capture Firefly City before Winter Frost Earl arrives!"
The generals exchanged looks, their faces showing a shared sense of helplessness.
Just then, a commotion erupted outside.
The Storm Earl, already in a foul mood, slammed his fist on the table and roared, "Who dares to violate military discipline and cause a disturbance at night? Drag them out and hang them!"
"My Lord, something's wrong!"
The general who had spoken earlier jumped to his feet, not waiting for the Storm Earl's response, and rushed out of the tent with a serious expression.
The others quickly followed suit, rushing outside the tent.
The sounds became clearer as they stepped out.
They could now hear distant, faint screams.
"That direction... it's the infirmary camp!" The general's face changed drastically.
At that moment, a messenger soldier ran in, panic evident on his face. He knelt down and urgently reported, "My Lord, there are monsters in the infirmary camp!"
"Monsters? What kind of monsters?" The Storm Earl was bewildered.
But he didn't have to wonder for long.
With a loud, rumbling sound, a tent a hundred meters away was suddenly flung into the air. The wind scattered the dust, revealing a massive, four- to five-meter-tall humanoid creature made entirely of rock.
With a casual punch, it crushed several soldiers and their armor into a bloody pulp, leaving a large crater in the ground.
The terrifying strength made several generals' scalps tingle.
Further away, numerous identical rock monsters were wreaking havoc, slaughtering the fleeing soldiers.
"What... what is happening?"
The Storm Earl's eyes widened in horror as he stared at the monsters.
This was the core of the camp, guarded by thousands of soldiers. How did these monsters get here?
