Chapter 80: Hiberrian's Great Crisis
Chapter 80: Hiberrian's Great Crisis
A buzzing echoed in Hiberrian's ears, as if distorting her sense of space and vision.
She witnessed the silver liquid anomaly hurtling through the classroom like a cannonball, crashing and colliding, each impact creating a splash of silver and crimson, like steel ravaging through cake.
The fifth-rank demon teacher, who had been standing at the classroom door, was now partially devoured by the silver anomaly, his body torn open with a gaping wound. Blood gushed from the wound, soaking the grass below as the remaining half of his body lay still, trembling slightly like a discarded puppet.
All traces of life faded from him, leaving only a pair of hollow eyes that gazed helplessly at the dome of the greenhouse.
The once peaceful greenhouse had, in an instant, transformed into a chaotic and toxic nightmare. The tranquility was devoured by scorching black mist, and the air was filled with the rising and falling cries of the demon students.
The omen of death gripped Hiberrian's heart like an invisible claw, and a chill ran up her spine, crawling from the base of her neck to her throat. Each breath became labored and heavy.
Her heart pounded in her chest, threatening to leap out.
"Miss Hiberrian, I finally found you."
Accompanying the hoarse voice, a dark figure emerged from the distant doorway, its silhouette growing clearer with each step. Malice radiated from the figure, causing Hiberrian to shudder.
Her body stiffened, immobilized as if bound by an unseen magic.
Beside her, the fragile first-rank Great Lover Poet seemed unable to withstand the corrosive toxic mist and soon dissipated into orange fluorescent light.
This rare, time-limited paradise had, in an instant, become a bloody greenhouse of chaos and fear.
The screams of the demon students gradually weakened as the silver anomaly ravaged them, devouring them one by one like a reaper mowing down grass.
And with each consumption, the silver anomaly grew larger and more formidable.
For the moment, Hiberrian put aside her concerns for the Great Lover Poet.
When a summoned creature was defeated, it would automatically return to its card form and back to its owner, requiring a longer cooldown period before it could be summoned again.
Now, she had to worry about herself!
Dense black mist filled the lush greenhouse, a byproduct of the toxic magic. Amidst the splattered crimson on tree trunks, a black-clad figure advanced toward Hiberrian, their gaze locked onto their prey.
The figure's cloak fluttered in the gentle breeze that stirred within the greenhouse, and with steady, cold steps, they approached, each footfall heavy with murderous intent.
At that moment, Hiberrian finally saw the intruder's true face.
It was a woman with a hideous scar on her cheek, followed by a shadowy figure that resembled a servant—a mist sorcerer.
Despite the woman's potential beauty, unmarred by the scars, her eyes betrayed her—chaotic and filled with countless unspoken murders.
A fifth-rank challenger?
The overwhelming pressure of a strong opponent threatened to consume Hiberrian.
Without hesitation, she cast Purification Magic to break free from the control and entered an invisible state, creating distance between them.
Even though Hiberrian had temporarily hidden herself, the exit of the classroom was blocked by the silver anomaly, as if her last glimmer of hope had been snuffed out, leaving her with no escape route.
"You were supposed to die naturally within this shadow world according to the mechanism.
The woman seemed reluctant to deal with Hiberrian personally, and it was uncertain if the collision with the young duchess had been successful. However, after interrogating several demon students along the way, she finally obtained information about Hiberrian's possible whereabouts.
"There was indeed a tall girl with silver hair and amber eyes seen within the school grounds."
The woman controlling the silver anomaly seemed well aware that Hiberrian had concealed herself, leaving behind an illusion that bore the brunt of her attack.
"This time, the Shadow World seems to have matched two formidable opponents, triggering the protection mechanism set by the Demon Academy's principal and fulfilling the task objective." The woman spoke slowly, "But for you, such luck won't strike twice."
Although the whereabouts of Hiberrian's teammates remained unknown, they were most likely spending their time in some corridor or room within the school grounds.
According to the intelligence received from their informant in Hedin's Kingdom, just before participating in the match to assassinate Hiberrian:
"Accompanying Hiberrian through the Void Gate into the building was the chief newcomer of the Sage Court of the Ikelite Academy."
"Iron-ranked registered challenger."
"Second-rank auxiliary."
"Practical information from the entrance examination was hidden by Lorren, the dean of the Sage Court."
"Has potential but currently poses a low threat."
"... "
Maintaining her invisible state, Hiberrian held her breath and focused her senses. If not for the blessing of the limited-edition meal from the Demon King's restaurant, which boosted her to a fourth-rank state, she wouldn't have had the confidence to even stall this fifth-rank opponent. Even so, she wasn't sure how long she could hold out!
"Duchess, come out on your own, and I can make your corpse look a little less ugly." The black-shadowed woman's words were filled with killing intent as she addressed the surrounding air with certainty, "No one can save you now."
...
In the Ikelite Academy, it was 4:30 in the morning. The outdoor giant screen in Gera Memorial Square remained lit, projecting the live feed from the Shadow World under the moonlight.
The surrounding buildings stood quietly and majestically in the night, with only a few windows emitting light.
On the steps, students began to stir, stretching lazily and chatting sleepily. Despite the likelihood of feeling tired during the day's classes, staying up all night to witness such a thrilling Shadow World challenge was well worth it.
After Cardinal Lanchi completed his challenge and cut off the feed, students started to leave the steps, much like how audiences would exit a movie theater.
The crowd in the square gradually thinned out, leaving only a handful of students watching the healing time of the Great Lover Poet in the botanical garden, akin to an ending credits scene, or slowly packing up to leave.
"I want to watch Cardinal Lanchi's Shadow World next time as well."
"But for a fourth-rank Shadow World, the cooldown period is two months. By the time he can challenge the Shadow World again, half the semester will be over."
Suddenly, the brightness of the warm and peaceful outdoor giant screen intensified once more, as if something significant had occurred within the projection.
However, it brought not delight but a bone-chilling scream that sent shivers down one's spine.
The abrupt change in the screen caught the attention of the students who were busy tidying up their trash, causing them to shudder and look up instinctively.
"An attacker in the Shadow World?"
The students on the steps exclaimed in surprise, their eyes glued to the screen as they were drawn into the thrilling scene!
