Chapter 790: A Dim Future
Chapter 790: A Dim Future
Perhaps touched by Director Lyon's sense of integrity, after he vowed to uphold justice, Prince Joshua generously abandoned his plan to report him. With tears in his eyes, he decided to become a Purifier, dedicating his life to the great cause of protecting humanity.
As he took out a bonding contract and gently held Prince Freckles' wrist, helping him press his handprint onto it, Lyon immediately felt a surge of anger. He raised his hand and struck the prince, intending to test the observation effect of the Face Strike Omens. However,
"Ah!"
With a cry of pain, Prince Freckles quickly covered his face, his left cheek turning red. He looked at Lyon with confusion, while Lyon stared at his hand, equally perplexed.
"But you have Impact Immunity... How can you still feel pain? Could it be... No, that can't be right!"
Suddenly realizing the issue, Lyon opened his badge panel and noticed the Materialism skill slowly flashing in the slot.
"..."
"Sorry, I didn't mean to hit you. But it seems like your Impact Immunity effect was partially blocked by Materialism, so you still felt the pain."
Apologetically, Lyon nodded at Prince Freckles and offered an apology. As Joshua looked on in horror, Lyon once again raised his guilty right hand...
"You? Ah!!!"
...
"Lyon?"
Veronica, who was adjusting her sleepwear in front of a dressing mirror, was startled by Lyon's sudden appearance in the mirror.
Stepping aside to make room for Lyon to exit the mirror, Queen Veronica covered her heart, slightly annoyed. "Why do you always appear through windows or mirrors? Can't you just use the door like a normal person once in a while?"
"I promise, next time!"
After making a somewhat unreliable promise, Lyon shook his numb right hand and eagerly asked, "Veronica, have you seen my belt?"
"It's hanging on the screen."
Veronica extended her arm from beneath her robe and pointed towards the screen. Her expression remained calm, but her eyes held a hint of loneliness. "Lyon, you've only been back for a day, and now you have something else to attend to?"
"I..."
Noticing her slightly downcast mood, Lyon hesitated as he was about to fasten his belt. "It's not that urgent. We can do it a little later..."
"No, I'm fine."
Sensing Lyon's hesitation, Veronica stood up and walked over to help him adjust the tie at his chest. She tilted her head slightly, her eyes softening as she looked up at him. "Just as you don't want to disrupt my plans when I'm busy, I don't want you to delay the things you truly need to do because you're considering my feelings. Lyon, I want to be your support and strength, not a burden or..."
As she spoke, Veronica's nose wrinkled slightly, as if she had smelled something. Then, her eyebrows lifted in a subtle smile. "I smell perfume... So, you visited another woman while I was still asleep?"
"Huh?" Lyon was taken aback by her words. He sniffed, but couldn't detect any scent.
Wow, I only had physical contact with Leila in the mirror world for a brief moment, and you can even smell that? Is your nose also an anomaly?
After resisting the urge to test his theory, Lyon began his story, starting with the unique abilities of Miss Collision and ending with his recent experience of testing the Face Strike Omens.
Upon hearing Lyon's account of his overly enthusiastic efforts to find Joshua a job, Veronica, despite her best efforts to contain her laughter, couldn't hold it in any longer.
"You really are something else..."
Managing to stifle her laughter, Veronica wiped away the tears of mirth from the corners of her eyes. "Joshua has been spoiled for over a decade. No one has ever laid a finger on him, but now that you've become his uncle, he's going to get a taste of his own medicine, and then some!"
"Should I go easier on him next time?" Lyon asked.
"No, you should go harder!" Veronica winked at Lyon. "When Joshua was little, he was adorable. But as he grew up, his mother and uncle turned him into a real pain. Every time he saw me, his sister, he would say the most awful things.
I'm not the most forgiving person, and if he hadn't become a Purifier, I would have found him a female monkey from across the sea and married him off to her when he came of age."
"A female... what?" Lyon asked, confused.
"A female monkey," Veronica clarified.
Lyon was taken aback. "You were serious about that?"
"Anyway, his unpleasant personality is probably beyond correction. By beating him, you might actually be doing him a favor."
Veronica summarized the situation, then lifted Lyon's tie with her finger and tugged it upward. "As your wife, I trust you, but you should tone down your excessive charm and stop doing things that make me suspicious.
If you disappear while sleeping and return with the scent of another woman, I'll go straight to Anna to complain. After all, I'm not the most forgiving person."
Lyon was speechless.
"Just kidding," Veronica reassured him. "I probably won't be that petty. Now, go and take care of your business!"
She adjusted Lyon's tie, returning it to its proper position, then stood on her toes and planted a firm kiss on his cheek. "You're amazing, just as I thought. Oh, and by the way!"
Veronica paused, as if remembering something. "What did you see with Joshua's anomaly? Will you be able to complete your new mission?"
"Yes," Lyon nodded slightly, a smile on his face. "I wanted to see more, like how many children we'll have in the future, who Anna will marry, and whether William will pass his final exams. But unfortunately, Joshua's anomaly didn't work well on me. My hand hurt, and I couldn't see a second future."
Veronica shook her head, amused and exasperated. "You..."
Without saying another word, she gazed softly at Lyon's retreating figure, watching him disappear through the mirrors.
When Lyon re-emerged from the mirrors and returned to Joshua's side, Miss Collision, who had been anxiously pacing, rushed forward, her face filled with worry. "Senior Lyon! Will they really hang us in the Maiden Kingdom?"
