Chapter 79: The Adventure of the Magic Coin
Beyond the争夺 in Bathor City, Players had already expanded their reach into other regions of the Anzeta Great Wasteland. Some had even set their sights on Ashen Hollow’s stronghold—the most dangerous, yet richest, destination in the eyes of adventurers: Dragon Vale.
Over the past five years, a rough road had been carved between Dragon Vale and Bathor City, known to Goblins as the Bumpy Path. It served as a convenient route for Monster Followers to reinforce their positions.
Now, on this uneven trail, a group of Players advanced.
All hailing from a future legendary Magic-focused Guild—【Magic Coin】—they were still mere unknowns in their current form, with only twenty-odd members. The Guild’s leader was Charlotte, the last steadfast MagePlayer in a world where magic had become nearly impossible to obtain.
In this version, where Magic Scrolls were nonexistent, Mages had been crippled by absurdly high spellbook requirements—reduced to helpless "Magic Grandchildren." Meanwhile, Sorcerers rose to prominence, hailed as the true True Mages.
Even within 【Magic Coin】, only a handful remained loyal to the Mage path. The vast majority had abandoned it, switching to Sorcerer.
Now, five elite Guild members—each at Level 3—stood together, facing the unknown.
“Captain,” asked the female Player whose ID was Flying Witch, “are you sure we can actually get a Spell here?”
She was a Wild Wizard, a subclass of Sorcerer, infamous for being one of the most team-killer-friendly classes—her magic stemmed from the chaotic force lurking beneath the fabric of creation. Her spells were wild, unpredictable, and often unleashed untamed surges of raw energy.
Charlotte glanced at the crude parchment map in his hand, pointing at a lopsided skull symbol.
“This is it—the Tower of the Great Wise One.”
“I spent eight gold coins to bribe an Orc Overseer into handing over this map after he’d finished the tavern’s entire stock. They seemed honest enough… or at least, harmless.”
Beside him, the Deputy Leader Mingyue frowned uneasily.
“But I overheard some Ogres drunk off their minds—they said their boss is also an Ogre. Are you sure these big fellows can even be Mages?”
Charlotte remembered the sight: Ogres sprawled on the ground, roaring drunkenly, “Meat! Meat! Meat!” His lips twitched.
“S-should be fine… probably.”
He had no real confidence. He’d already prepared himself for failure. After all, eight gold coins wasn’t a huge loss for the entire Guild.
“Still,” he said, eyes burning with resolve, “we have to try. Reclaiming the glory of the Mage—this is our duty.”
“Captain!” Mingyue was moved to tears.
【Magic Coin】 was founded by Mage enthusiasts. Though most had now turned to Sorcerer, their hearts still carried the sacred belief in the True Mage.
Soon, the silhouette of Rockfort came into view.
“Whoa… that’s huge.”
“This fortress is actually impressive.”
A Two-Headed Dragon roared in the sky. Great Goblins patrolled the outer walls of the city. From within the fortress, the powerful Auras of Ashen Hollow’s army echoed through the air—training drills in full swing.
After a careful observation, Charlotte concluded:
“This place can’t be breached from the front. The Official wouldn’t make it that easy.”
“Clearly, they’re discriminating against MagePlayers.”
“Agreed,” Flying Witch growled. “I can’t believe they’d treat us like this.”
Then, Mingyue spotted something—a massive rock on a nearby slope, with a hidden passage behind it.
“Captain! We can hide there and sneak in undetected.”
“Brilliant idea,” Charlotte nodded.
The five members crept silently behind the giant boulder.
But they didn’t realize—this was a classic mistake every adventurer makes.
That rock had witnessed countless deaths. And now, it would claim another.
Crack.
Mingyue’s foot touched the ground—just as the Rune Array beneath him activated.
A surge of energy erupted.
“Wait! Don’t come near!” he cried—but it was too late.
The intricate Rune Array flared to life, unleashing a torrent of magical force. Flames erupted in Mingyue’s vision.
“Shit!”
BOOM!
A blast of fire engulfed him. His body was reduced to charred remains—his First Blood delivered to the realm of the fallen.
Charlotte, though untouched by the trap, was still thrown back by the shockwave. His face was blackened by soot.
“Traps! Everyone, stay alert!”
“Mingyue’s dead. We can’t afford another death.”
Charlotte noticed a second Spell etched into the corner of the trap—something faint, unknown. But he couldn’t decipher its purpose.
Meanwhile, the Great Goblin Guards atop Rockfort had heard the explosion.
They approached with casual confidence, even chatting casually.
“Another dumb adventurer fell for the trap.”
“Bet you ten gold coins there’s only one.”
“How many will die this time?”
Charlotte stared at them. His voice was firm.
“We’re leaving. Now. If we stay, we’ll be wiped out.”
“Everyone—use the passage. Someone, cast Mage Armor on me. I can’t defend myself.”
Flying Witch stepped forward immediately.
“Got it!”
She raised her hands, summoning a shimmering Aura of magic.
“Mage Armor!”
But then—something went wrong.
The surrounding magic ripped apart, surging wildly, uncontrollably.
[Your spell unleashed an untamed Magic Surge, producing an unpredictable effect!]
BANG!
A thunderous explosion.
And Charlotte—was transformed.
Into a docile, fluffy sheep.
“Baa…?”
The sheep’s voice trembled with anguish. Even through the innocent bleat, the despair was unmistakable.
“I-I’m so sorry! I triggered the wild surge!” Flying Witch bowed deeply to the sheep, then burst into laughter at the sight.
“Never mind,” someone said, “let’s get out of here. Staying will only make things worse.”
“Baa…,” Charlotte agreed, his eyes wide with silent despair.
The three survivors scrambled into the passage.
But then—SNAP!
Someone triggered a Web Spell.
A thick, sticky web shot out, wrapping around them like a trap.
“Gah—!”
The passage’s far end groaned—then a gigantic boulder began rolling down the tunnel, crushing the trapped Players beneath it.
“Baa…” Charlotte’s bleat echoed into the void—desperate, hopeless.
The Official is clearly targeting us. What kind of monster are they?! How could there be more traps?!
His mind screamed in silent fury.
