Chapter 79: Group Lessons
Chapter 79: Group Lessons
Namikaze Minato returned to the team with a glum expression on his face. He didn't feel bitter about his loss, as Jiraiya had indeed displayed remarkable strength, and he knew he wasn't a match for him. However, he felt embarrassed by the defeat. He was a fully-fledged genin who had been bested by a recent ninja academy graduate, and the loss had been swift and decisive.
"This Uchiha Obito is just too strong. He even defeated a genin. I'm not sure if Hatake Kakashi, despite being the same age, could have fared any better."
"There's also another possibility that it's because of the opponent..."
Hearing the whispers of the ninja academy students around him, Minato's embarrassment only grew.
As he returned, he saw the smile on Asuma Sarutobi's face, which he couldn't help but feel suspicious about.
"Asuma, do you know something I don't?" Minato asked, his eyes narrowing.
He thought something was amiss. Previously, when Asuma had brought them for special training, he had mentioned that Mu Yue was his private tutor. So, it was possible that Asuma knew about the genius in Mu Yue's class—Uchiha Obito.
"What are you talking about? How would I know how strong a first-year student is, to have defeated you so easily?" Asuma feigned ignorance.
Hearing Asuma's words only added to Minato's embarrassment. Being defeated so handily by a first-year student was not something he wanted to admit.
"Everyone, quiet down," Mu Yue said, gesturing with his palm for everyone to stop their discussions. "We have students here ranging from first to fourth year, as well as graduated genin. We are all companions from the same village, and I hope we can get along harmoniously."
"In a moment, I will assess your abilities and then divide you into groups for special training. There will be three groups—A, B, and C—and each group will receive different training." Mu Yue addressed Minato's earlier question.
With such a diverse range of students, including graduates, Mu Yue decided to teach them in groups. Since they were all in the same training ground, he could easily move between groups, and with the aid of his shadow clones, he could effectively teach the three groups as if they were three individual students.
The ability test was simple. Students were asked to demonstrate their basic ninja skills, including ninjutsu, taijutsu, and shuriken-throwing, and the teachers would then assign scores.
Mu Yue called over some of the teacher-in-training students, and within a class period, they had assessed and assigned scores to over three hundred students, dividing them into specific groups.
Group A was meant for students at the genin level, catering to graduates and exceptional ninja academy students. The main focus of their training would be chakra control, physical enhancement, taijutsu, and body flicker technique.
Group B consisted of the academy's outstanding students, and their training would focus on transformation jutsu, chakra control, and physical enhancement and taijutsu.
Group C was for the academy's average students, and their training content was similar to Group B, but the teachings would be more basic, and the training intensity would be relatively lower.
Mu Yue glanced at the list for Group A and immediately spotted many familiar names.
Uchiha Obito, Hatake Kakashi, and Might Guy were naturally on the list, along with Asuma Sarutobi, Kurenai Yuhi, Hibachi Genma, and Shizune...
Aside from Obito, those who made it into Group A were either genin or fourth-year students who had entered the annual rankings.
In Group B, Mu Yue recognized only three people—Ebizo, Moonlight Hayate, and Rin Nohara.
Ebizo's performance was somewhat embarrassing. Compared to the other members of Group B, he was quite skilled, but he fell just short of the mark for Group A. Moonlight Hayate had just entered his third year.
Anko Mitarashi, Tenten, and Rock Lee, the trio of struggling students, were assigned to Group C. The definition of "outstanding" and "average" was based on the standards of fourth-year students.
Mu Yue then instructed those on the left to try tree-climbing again, while those on the right tested their water-treading skills.
After observing the students' performances, Mu Yue had a good understanding of Group A's chakra control abilities.
"You didn't truly complete the training; you merely grasped the basics," Mu Yue said to one of the students who was attempting to climb the tree.
Then, he called upon Obito to demonstrate what it truly meant to have mastered the tree-climbing and water-treading training.
Obito sprinted up a tall tree, his feet sticking tightly to the branches as he spun his body in a full three-hundred-and-sixty-degree rotation, effortlessly maintaining his balance.
He followed this up by performing the Water Dragon Bullet technique, gracefully skimming across the water's surface despite the disruptive waves caused by the jutsu.
"Only when you've reached this level can you say that you've completed the training," Mu Yue said, pointing at Obito. "As of now, only Asuma, Shisui, Obito, and a few others have achieved this level of proficiency."
Rin, feeling competitive, decided to test her skills and jumped into the water. However, she lasted only three minutes before she started drinking in the water.
"Asuma, can you do it?" Rin asked, feeling that Mu Yue might have overestimated Asuma's abilities.
"Rin, don't underestimate me. My chakra control is quite strong," Asuma said, a little hurt that his close friend would doubt him. He, too, jumped into the water to showcase his skills.
"How come Asuma suddenly feels stronger..." Rin muttered, her eyes widening as she watched Asuma effortlessly navigate the choppy waters.
"Asuma, you seem even more amazing than before," Kurenai Yuhi honestly admitted.
"Hehe, it's just average; it's all basic stuff," Asuma replied, a proud smile on his face. He felt that all the water he'd drunk during Mu Yue's training hadn't been for nothing.
"Chakra control is a must for ninjas. I hope that in two weeks, all of you will be able to stand on the right," Mu Yue said after demonstrating the techniques a few more times for Group A.
Then, he moved on to Group B and asked the same question.
However, the situation in Group B was quite different. Only Ebisu stood on the right, most of the students were in the middle, and a small number were on the left.
Mu Yue had them demonstrate their chakra control, and it was clear that they were not as proficient as Group A. Aside from Ebisu, who continued with water-treading practice, Mu Yue instructed the rest of the group to focus on tree-climbing training.
As for Group C, Mu Yue didn't bother asking the same question. Instead, he dove straight into teaching them taijutsu.
Mu Yue's training plan for Group C was to focus on physical training and taijutsu in the morning and practice the Transformation Jutsu in the afternoon. Once they caught up in these areas, he would introduce chakra control training.
Mu Yue left a shadow clone with each group and, in his physical body, moved back and forth between the three groups. Whenever he spotted a student practicing incorrectly, he would provide a demonstration and guidance.
Before long, the morning passed, and Mu Yue announced the end of the lesson, signaling the start of the lunch break.
