Chapter 79: Good Fortune
Chapter 79: Good Fortune
"Lucky Pudding?"
Naoki's eyes widened in surprise as he witnessed the effect of this dessert.
His first thought went to Pokemon with the ability [Pickup], and he wondered what kind of magical results could be achieved if they were paired with this pudding.
Pickup Pokemon...
Naoki's mind conjured the image of the little Teddiursa.
According to Butterfree, it had successfully delivered the honey to Teddiursa and conveyed his message.
However, several hours had passed since Teddiursa left, and it hadn't shown its face at the ranch since. Naoki had no way of knowing how the little Pokemon felt about the exchange.
First of all, Teddiursa stealing was definitely wrong.
The reason he asked it to exchange the honey for other goods was to encourage it to change its behavior and acquire honey from nearby ranches through bartering.
If Teddiursa were that sensible, coupled with its adorable appearance, ranchers would happily share their honey with it, even without it deliberately putting on a cute act.
Most Pokemon had childlike personalities. While they might be mischievous, their personalities would gradually change after experiencing certain events or receiving guidance from someone.
Even Pokemon with an inherently evil nature would rein in their behavior and become obedient for someone they recognized.
Naoki felt a pang of regret as he thought about this. He regretted that he and Teddiursa were destined to part ways.
He had actually grown quite fond of Teddiursa.
However, his moment of wistfulness was soon dispelled by the delighted voice of Frostine.
Naoki's attention returned to the present, and he smiled at Frostine, offering one of the puddings to it before sharing the treat with the other Pokemon.
He tasted one himself. It was cool and refreshing, and soon his mouth was filled with a delightful mix of sweet honey, MooMoo Milk, and caramel flavors.
It was surprisingly tasty.
But the effect of the pudding seemed rather intangible.
A temporary boost in the consumer's luck...
Naoki tried to sense if there was any difference in his body, but he couldn't discern any noticeable changes.
He turned around and looked around. The surroundings remained the same.
Frostine and the other Pokemon who had eaten the pudding wore happy expressions on their faces.
So, what would be the manifestation of this good luck?
Naoki's mind wandered through various possibilities: finding money on the ground, encountering rare and elusive Pokemon, discovering mysterious treasures, or having a bountiful fishing haul.
With these thoughts, Naoki stepped out of the house. As he opened the door, he spotted a round object on the floor right at the doorway.
It was a stone, and Naoki picked it up curiously, examining it for a while before guessing its name.
"Everstone," he murmured.
"Could this be the effect of that dish? It's incredibly powerful!" Naoki thought to himself, astonished.
Just then, he noticed a sneaky figure lurking not far away.
Naoki's eyes darted between the figure and the Everstone in his hand, and suddenly, he had a stroke of insight. With a loud voice, he called out: "Teddiursa!"
The little Teddiursa, who had been peeking from the corner, was startled and nearly jumped.
"Come here!" Naoki instructed.
Teddiursa hesitated for a moment before cautiously padding forward.
Holding the Everstone, Naoki looked at the little Pokemon on the lawn and asked, one eyebrow raised, "Did you put this here?"
Teddiursa nodded vigorously. "Usa! Usa!"
"Why did you think of giving me this stone?"
At that moment, the Hapu, Aerodactyl, and other Pokemon who had finished their pudding happily ran out of the house.
Seeing their figures, Teddiursa's face paled as it realized they knew about its plan to steal honey. It swallowed nervously and then nodded honestly. "Usa... "
"Really? Okay!" Naoki responded quickly.
"Wait here!"
He turned and went back into the room, taking out a small portion of honey from the cabinet. As he prepared to leave, he suddenly remembered the lucky pudding and decided to bring one along.
He wanted to see what kind of reaction the Teddiursa, with its [Pickup] ability, would have to this lucky pudding.
After giving the honey to Teddiursa, its face lit up with surprise and delight.
"Usa!"
The little bear had never imagined it could obtain honey this way.
Naoki, observing its reaction, advised gently, "You see, it's much simpler to trade for honey this way, and it's also safer. You don't have to worry about being attacked if you're discovered stealing."
"Usa... " Teddiursa pondered his words carefully and found them to be true.
Naoki then offered the lucky pudding. "This is an extra gift for you. I hope you won't steal honey from others again."
Hearing this, Teddiursa's face flushed with shame.
"Usa... "
"Go on, eat it!" Naoki urged. "I made it with honey, so it should suit your taste."
Teddiursa had already caught a whiff of the honey scent and was eagerly licking its lips. It held the plate with the golden-brown pudding, its mouth watering.
Hearing Naoki's words, it immediately tilted its head back and devoured the pudding.
Instantly, a unique aroma burst in its mouth—cool, bouncy, smooth, and delicious.
"Usa!"
Teddiursa's eyes lit up brightly.
It had never tasted anything so delectable!
What now? It wanted another piece so badly...
Naoki spread his hands helplessly. "That was the last one. The one you just ate was the last serving."
"Usa... " Teddiursa's face fell, and even the honey in its hands lost its appeal.
Just then, Naoki added, "But maybe there'll be new pudding the next time you come by."
This was his first attempt at making it, and regardless of the pudding's taste, the effect alone made it worth preparing a large batch to store in the refrigerator.
That way, he could eat a piece every morning to boost his luck for the day, and who knows, he might encounter some pleasant surprises.
"Usa! Usa!" Teddiursa nodded eagerly, its eyes full of anticipation.
It would definitely be back!
Without lingering at the ranch, Teddiursa hurried off with the honey it had traded for, heading towards the back mountains.
Naoki stood there, watching Teddiursa leave, feeling a sense of certainty that this little bear would indeed return to trade honey with him again.
"How interesting," Naoki mused, looking at the Everstone in his hand. "I wonder if it was because I ate the lucky pudding that I had good luck and met Teddiursa, or if it had always intended to come over and trade honey for the stone."
