Chapter 780: Reunion with an Old Friend
Chapter 780: Reunion with an Old Friend
Cartoon Kingdom, activate!
A massive book appears on Bercas's field, unfolding with a dramatic flourish. A tiny Cartoon Castle emerges from the opened book, its gates flanked by burning torches and a small red flag fluttering atop.
"Cartoon Kingdom can only be activated by removing the top five cards of your Deck from play." (Original Effect)
Bercas calmly draws the top five cards from his Deck.
"I remove the top five cards from my Deck from play."
"Cartoon Kingdom?"
Joey's mind is filled with curiosity, and he braces himself with utmost focus.
Bercas claimed to have retired, but it seems he hasn't been completely idle these past years. Bercas is certain that he didn't possess this card back in his heyday.
Bercas is aware of his own Cartoon series, a personal deck he created as the father of Duel Monsters. It is the only set in the world, featuring adorable and mischievous monsters.
However, the key card of Bercas's Cartoon series back then was the Continuous Spell Card, Cartoon World, which was essential for maintaining the existence of all Cartoon monsters. At least, Joey had never heard of Cartoon Kingdom during those days.
Cartoon Kingdom first appeared when Bercas made a reappearance in GX. However, it wasn't immediately turned into a real card; it was exclusively featured in the contemporary game, Card Power.
In Card Power, Cartoon Kingdom retained the same effect as in the animation and was also a Continuous Spell Card. But after becoming a real card, Cartoon Kingdom was modified into a Field Spell Card, and its effect underwent some changes.
Compared to the animation, the real card added a resistance effect, "Cartoon monsters cannot be affected by your opponent's effects," making it an overall enhancement.
"Be careful, Joey Boy," Bercas smiles, "My Cartoons are going all out."
I Normal Summon 'Holy Fairy'!"
A blue-skinned fairy with golden hair appears on the field, her hands clasped together in a prayer-like pose.
[Holy Fairy, ATK 800]
"Then, I activate the Quick-Play Spell Card, 'Dimensional Magic'!" Bercas declares, "This card can only be activated when I have a Spellcaster-Type monster on my field.
Tribute one monster on my field to Special Summon a Spellcaster-Type monster from my hand!"
"I Tribute 'Holy Fairy' to Special Summon a Spellcaster-Type monster from my hand!"
Bercas reveals the card in his hand with a mischievous grin.
"Come forth, my cutest Cartoon monster—
—Cartoon Black Magician Girl, appear!"
The massive Cartoon Kingdom book closes and then flips open again. A petite magical girl lands in a group, her white legs and cute face with a touch of mischief.
[Cartoon Black Magician Girl, ATK 2000]
"Cartoon Black Magician Girl?"
Joey stares at the black-haired magician girl who has appeared on the field.
"You, you've even turned the Black Magician Girl into your Cartoon version?"
Bercas had a habit of transforming his opponent's monsters into his own Cartoon versions. From Kaiba's Blue-Eyes White Dragon to the Cartoon Blue-Eyes, from Yugi's Black Magician to the Cartoon Black Magician, and even the summoning of the Cartoon Demon.
However, Joey recalls that there shouldn't have been a Cartoon Black Magician Girl back then, as Yugi hadn't even Summoned the Black Magician Girl during the Duelist Kingdom. The first appearance of this beloved magical girl was in Duel City.
"That's right. See, isn't this much cuter?"
Bercas gestures to his Black Magician Girl with pride.
"How is that? Clearly, the original version is cuter!" Joey asserts confidently.
"Tsk, tsk."
Bercas shakes his head.
"You don't know how to appreciate it. My Cartoon monsters are obviously cuter in every way. You'll just have to experience her power yourself."
Bercas waves his hand.
"The effect of Dimensional Magic isn't over yet!
After Summoning a Spellcaster-Type monster with this effect, destroy one of your opponent's monsters!"
Bercas points at Joey's field and chuckles.
"It's been a while since I've seen Joey's Red-Eyes, and it's nice to reminisce, but it's time for it to leave the field."
Boom! The Red-Eyes Black Dragon was sucked into an invisible force and sealed within a golden container resembling a coffin, locked in place by intertwining chains. With a loud blast, both the dragon and the coffin exploded into ashes.
"Red-Eyes!"
Joey raised his arm instinctively to shield himself, letting out a cry.
Bercas chuckled softly.
"I told you, my Cartoon Monsters have always been at full power. If you let your guard down for a moment..." He furrowed his brows.
As the smoke cleared, the majestic Red-Eyes Black Dragon remained on the field, as if the Extreme Escape Magician had escaped the coffin that sealed it just before the explosion.
Not only that, but after the smoke cleared, there was even a faint silhouette of a new dragon on Joey's field.
It was a dragon with a pitch-black body, similar in appearance to the Red-Eyes, but smaller in size. Its demeanor was still fierce, and it roared menacingly at Joey as if taunting him.
"You don't think I've been standing still all these years, do you?" Joey chuckled.
"The effect of 'True Red-Eyes Chrono Dragon' in my hand.
The Perfect Edition is available at 69 Book Bar! 6=9+Book_Bar Original Novel.
When a 'Red-Eyes' monster with a Level of 7 or lower on my field is destroyed by an opponent's monster's attack or an opponent's card effect and sent to my Graveyard, I can Special Summon this card from my hand in Defense Position. Then, I can revive the destroyed monster on the field in the same battle position it had when it was destroyed!"
[True Red-Eyes Chrono Dragon, DEF 1600]
[Red-Eyes Black Dragon, ATK 2400]
"It's a shame, but my Red-Eyes isn't that easy to deal with either, just like this old man here," Joey said, puffing out his chest.
"I see. Maybe you're a little different from the old days," Bercas said, pausing for a moment before laughing lightly.
"But my Cartoon Monsters can't be understood by common sense either, and you haven't forgotten that, have you?"
"What?"
"Battle!" Bercas declared. "Cartoon Black Mage, direct attack on Joey!"
Joey: "!"
"Cartoon Monsters can only be blocked by other Cartoon Monsters. Have you forgotten that?" Bercas laughed heartily. "When there are no Cartoon Monsters on the opponent's field, Cartoon Monsters can directly attack the opponent's Life Points!"
"Go, Cartoon Black Mage!"
The black-robed mage girl performed a backflip and, with an air of arrogance, stepped on the heads of the two Red-Eyes on Joey's field, making her way directly to Joey. She held her staff with both hands and struck Joey's forehead with it.
Joey was dazed by the blow, seeing the mischievous mage girl sticking her tongue out at him. She then placed the staff on her shoulder and flew back to her master with a haughty attitude.
[Joey, LP 4000 → LP 2000]
"Well done, my Cartoon Girl!" Bercas laughed coldly.
"It's been a pleasant reunion, but unfortunately, it's time to bring it to an end.
I activate the Spell Card 'Shadow Cartoon' from my hand! This card can only be activated when 'Cartoon World' is on my field, but I don't have Cartoon World on my field.
However, as long as the Continuous Spell 'Cartoon Kingdom' is on the field, its name can be treated as 'Cartoon World'!"
A Spell Card appeared on his field, transforming into the image of a book. The book opened, and a ghostly shadow flew out, replicating the appearance of Joey's Red-Eyes Black Dragon.
"Red-Eyes?" Joey exclaimed in surprise. "What's going on?"
"Hahaha! This is the effect of Shadow Cartoon! Select one of your opponent's monsters and inflict damage equal to its ATK points!
The monster I choose is... Red-Eyes Black Dragon!"
[Red-Eyes Black Dragon, ATK 2400]
[Joey, LP 2000]
Joey: "!"
