Chapter 78: Visiting
Chapter 78: Visiting
Hospital Wing.
"Madam Pomfrey, I've come to see Hermione—Hermione Granger", Felix said.
"Oh, her", Madam Pomfrey grumbled. "Young wizards these days are just too much trouble. They abuse potions and have no respect for magic... Given her condition, she'll have to stay in the hospital for at least three weeks."
Felix asked with interest, "Can you determine which potion caused the effects?"
"It's likely the Polyjuice Potion mixed with cat hair. It's absurd, I have no idea where they got the potion from", Madam Pomfrey said, pouring half a cup of potion from a large bottle. "On Christmas night, those two young wizards brought her in, and I was shocked. I almost thought it was irreversible magical damage."
"Polyjuice Potion..." Felix mused over the term. After a few seconds, he said gently to Madam Pomfrey, "Madam, may I bring the potion to her?"
Felix pushed open the door and entered the ward.
The room contained about seven or eight beds, but only one was curtained off with white fabric. As Felix approached, the curtain opened from the inside.
"Madam Pomfrey? You've come to give me the potion?"
A furry head poked out, and the voice was unmistakably his Assistant's.
Hermione and Felix's eyes met, and she froze.
"Aah!"
The young witch let out a terrified scream, immediately pulling back and yanking the curtain shut, causing the entire bed to shake violently.
But in that brief moment, Felix had seen his Assistant's current appearance.
Her face was covered in dark brown cat fur, which mixed with her own hair. A few whiskers sprouted on either side of her cheeks, her eyes had turned a ginger hue, and two pointed ears stood upright on her head.
"Hermione Granger, I heard about your situation from Potter and Weasley, so I came to visit you", Felix said with a barely suppressed grin.
He waited quietly for a few seconds before Hermione's trembling voice came from behind the curtain. "Professor, hello."
"I've brought your potion, and if you don't mind, I can take a look and see if I can help a bit", Felix added.
"Professor, you mean... you can solve my problem?" Hermione asked hopefully from behind the curtain.
Felix's mind was still replaying her appearance, and he struggled to maintain his composure. "I can only say I'll try. Your case is quite rare."
Hermione slowly pulled back the curtain, lifting her head to glance at him quickly before burying her face in her hands.
Felix placed the potion on a nearby table and carefully examined the young witch's current state.
This was indeed a rare situation. The Polyjuice Potion is notoriously difficult to brew, and even master potion-makers don't keep much in stock or use it lightly. The chances of it going wrong are even lower.
Hermione felt his inquisitive gaze and asked softly, "Professor, do you have a way to fix this? Madam Pomfrey said I'll need at least three weeks to recover. Oh, how many classes will I miss!"
"Hmm, it's a misuse of the Polyjuice Potion, right?" Felix thought seriously. This was indeed a challenging problem.
He raised his wand and tapped it gently on Hermione's forehead, the tip glowing with a golden light.
The young witch's face remained unchanged.
"Hmm, human Transfiguration doesn't work, it might be conflicting with the potion's effects... Fascinating, I mean, troublesome. Let's try a more obscure spell."
In Hermione's eyes, Professor Hup enthusiastically cast spell after spell. He even pulled out a piece of parchment to record the effects of various spells.
"This one won't work!"
"This one has some effect, but it's not significant."
"What about this one?"
Hermione watched Felix with a blank expression. Are you really doing this to help me? I see through you, Professor!
Finally, a rather obscure spell took effect.
The brown fur on her face quickly fell off and disappeared, revealing smooth, clean skin. Hermione felt the change and first touched her face, then picked up a small mirror from under the pillow to examine herself closely.
"Oh, my goodness." Hermione covered her mouth.
At that moment, her appearance had greatly improved. The thick, dense brown fur on her face had mostly disappeared, but her cat whiskers and the pair of pointed ears on her head remained.
But even this effect was enough to bring Hermione, who had been on the verge of a mental breakdown, immense joy.
Hermione beamed as she looked at herself in the mirror.
"Professor, what kind of magic is this?"
"It's a light transfiguration spell that can refine minor physical imperfections. Of course, it's temporary, and the effect will last for about two hours", Felix explained.
"Is it human transfiguration?" Hermione asked knowledgeably. She had planned to learn this magic, but now she couldn't help feeling a bit disappointed, as human transfiguration was an extremely difficult spell.
So difficult that even most adult wizards couldn't master it.
"Sort of, but its effects might not be as impressive as you imagine. It can only refine a limited area. You see, this spell was invented by a vampire, and its initial purpose was simply to conceal their fangs."
"Vampire?" Hermione asked with interest. The problem that had been troubling her was largely resolved, even if only temporarily, which greatly lifted her spirits.
"Yes, in the Middle Ages, vampires were hated by everyone. To blend in with the crowd, they developed this spell. But to be honest, the effect is rather mediocre and can't compare to human transfiguration or the Polyjuice Potion. Nowadays, it's hardly used."
"Professor, I heard that the Polyjuice Potion can change a person's appearance at will?"
"Indeed, one of my junior classmates has this talent, and it's quite convenient", Felix glanced at her. "That way, you don't have to risk taking the Polyjuice Potion."
Hermione lowered her head, and the pointed ears on her head drooped.
"Professor, I..."
"You secretly brewed the Polyjuice Potion, didn't you? I mean, you, Potter, and Weasley."
Hermione looked up, her face full of surprise as she stared at Professor Hup.
"Yes", Felix played with his wand, speaking casually. "That was easy to guess, especially when I recalled you specifically asking me about special potions. I introduced six powerful potions, but you were clearly more interested in the Polyjuice Potion."
"The Polyjuice Potion can change a person's appearance, allowing you to gather information without anyone knowing—"
"So, I want to know, who is your suspect?" Felix looked at Hermione.
After a long silence—
"Malfoy", Hermione said softly. "We suspect he is the Heir of Slytherin."
