Chapter 78: New World Opens
Chapter 78: New World Opens (Seeking Recommendations)
Liam certainly didn't want the classroom to be in a mess, especially since the Pixies would destroy his classmates' belongings. He pointed his wand at a desk and cast a transformation spell, turning it into a fine mesh net. Then, he cast Waddiwasi, and the net shot out like a bullet, enveloping the cage on the podium and most of the Pixies inside it.
The few Pixies that escaped the net were easily subdued by the students. Harry, with his agile movements, even managed to swat one down with a book.
When all the Pixies were back in the cage, Lockhart seemed a bit disappointed. He briefly praised the students and then awarded Liam five extra points.
Liam smiled, not because of Lockhart's praise, but because he received a message from the System in his mind: for preventing the Pixies from causing chaos in the classroom, he had earned two Deviation Points.
Lockhart, mistaking Liam's smile for admiration, boasted even more enthusiastically. "When I was traveling in Scotland, I once encountered hundreds of Pixies. But I subdued them all with a spell I created myself..."
Fortunately, after this farce, there wasn't much time left in class, and the bell soon rang, saving everyone's ears.
After class, Liam and Hermione went to the Library as usual to do their homework. Ginny soon joined them to study. She first thanked Liam for the notebook he had given her and then asked them about Lockhart's class.
"I can only say that Lockhart might not be cut out for teaching. He brings his celebrity antics into the classroom, which is very inappropriate", Liam whispered his opinion to Ginny. Hermione seemed to want to say something but thought better of it and remained silent.
After dinner, Liam returned to the dormitory to pack some things. When he was sure no one was around, he entered the bathroom (Liam was certain that, apart from the bedrooms, the bathrooms were one of the few places in Hogwarts without surveillance).
After locking himself in a stall, he opened the spatial door and entered the Multiverse Emporium.
Liam felt that he had absorbed most of the inheritance he had acquired, so he decided to venture into a New World to see if there was anything suitable for him.
Looking at the 49 Deviation Points in his hand, after some consideration, he decided to choose a Level 5 World for his adventure. The more powerful the abilities, the more Deviation Points were required to master them. A Level 6 World would be too dangerous, considering that the Plants vs. Zombies World, with its massive zombie wars, was only a Level 5 World. A Level 6 World would likely be far more hazardous. Additionally, he might not have enough points left to enhance his abilities.
After making his decision, Liam communicated with the Multiverse Emporium, paid the Deviation Points, and was then transported to the New World in a flash of light.
"Where am I? This looks just like any normal world."
Liam stood on a dirt path, looking around and muttering to himself. The path beneath his feet, clearly trodden by people, with shoe prints on it, indicated that this world was inhabited.
The sides of the road were lined with desolate mountains and forests. Liam walked to the edge of the road to take a closer look and noticed that the trees were common varieties found in southern China. It seemed that this world was an Eastern one, but the specifics were still unknown.
Liam used Life Magic to sense the surroundings and discovered that the most prominent feature was the overwhelming presence of death, which far outweighed the presence of life. He dug into the ground with his foot at the spot where the death aura was strongest and found a human tooth.
"This place doesn't look too good. I hope I run into some living people", Liam thought to himself. He decided to explore the area and look for clues. Based on his past experiences, whenever he arrived in a new world, he often found himself near the Fate's Chosen of that world.
Since there was a road, following it was the best option. Liam took some items from his emporium, removed his robe, and packed it along with the items in his backpack, dressing himself as a traveler. The reason he took off the robe was that a black robe looked too sinister in most worlds.
After walking along the dirt road for about ten minutes, the desolate mountains and forests on either side remained unchanged. Liam confirmed that the pervasive death aura was not just a local issue but affected the entire region.
Liam silently prayed that he hadn't landed in some post-apocalyptic world, as fewer living people would mean fewer opportunities for him.
Fortunately, after rounding a small hill, he started to see pedestrians on the road. The fields on either side of the road had turned into rice paddies, with farmers working in them.
Observing the clothing of the merchants on the road and the farmers in the fields, Liam recognized the style typical of the Republican Era. He had a better idea of the world he had traversed to; it seemed to be a setting from a Hong Kong film, though he needed to find someone to confirm which specific world it was.
A bit further down the road, he saw a bustling small town, which appeared to be a county town.
The county town was surrounded by a city wall, with a city gate facing the dirt road. However, the wall and the gate were in a state of disrepair, with wild grasses swaying in the wind between the bricks.
At the city gate, a few soldiers stood guard, but they looked more like a gang of thugs than actual soldiers. They slouched and swaggered, searching the belongings of the common people entering and exiting the city, occasionally pocketing an egg or a few copper coins.
Liam, confident in his magical abilities, walked into the city with a proud and determined stride. Thanks to his modern upbringing, Liam was tall and fair-skinned, and he was dressed in a standard Western outfit. His confident demeanor and air of pride made the guards hesitant to stop him. They even bowed and scraped to him.
"Good for you", Liam said, mimicking the mannerisms of a young master from a TV drama. He then took a few Silver Sikkas from his pocket and tossed them to the guards.
The guards quickly picked up the silver coins and found that they were quite pure, though smaller than the usual silver dollars and inscribed with foreign text they couldn't recognize.
"Guess that young master must have studied abroad; he even rewards people with foreign money", one guard remarked. Though the amount was small, it added up to about two ounces of silver, which was enough for some families to live on for a month during the early Republican Era. For the guards, it was enough for a good meal and some drinks.
