Chapter 777: Prophecy and the Annoyed Umbridge
Chapter 777: Prophecy and the Annoyed Umbridge
On Wednesday afternoon, in Divination class, Professor Trelawney held a copy of Guide to Dream Interpretation and spoke in a mystical tone about the three methods of interpreting dreams.
The students, seated around the room, were nodding off, and even Ivan was growing impatient.
His Divination skill had only risen two levels and hadn't progressed since then. He wasn't sure if it was because Trelawney's class was too basic, or if he simply lacked the talent for it.
"Next, everyone will pair up. Using the Guide to Dream Interpretation, you will interpret each other's recent dreams..."
Trelawney closed her book and assigned the class task. Just then, a harsh sound of a door opening interrupted her.
Ivan turned his head curiously and saw Umbridge emerging from the trapdoor on the floor.
"Good afternoon, Professor Trelawney", Umbridge said, closing the trapdoor and looking at Trelawney with a sickly sweet smile. "I trust you received my notice, correct? It specified the date and time for your class inspection."
Professor Trelawney nodded stiffly, looking unhappy, and without a glance at Umbridge, continued to guide the students through the dream interpretation process.
Umbridge paid no mind to Trelawney's cold demeanor. She grabbed the nearest chair, pulled it aside, and sat down, occasionally writing notes on her clipboard.
When Trelawney's voice grew hoarse and she sat down to rest, Umbridge, who had been silent, suddenly spoke up.
"How long have you been in this position, Professor Trelawney?"
"About sixteen years", Trelawney replied reluctantly.
"Sixteen years? That's quite a while..." Umbridge noted, jotting something down on her clipboard. "So, Headmaster Dumbledore hired you, I take it?"
"Yes!" Professor Trelawney answered succinctly.
Umbridge made a few more notes before looking up again. "According to my information, you are the great-great-granddaughter of the famous Seer Cassandra Trelawney?"
"Yes", Professor Trelawney said, her head held high with pride.
"However, I recall that Cassandra Trelawney's descendants did not inherit her prophetic abilities... Do you consider yourself the exception?" Umbridge asked skeptically.
"Because such abilities often skip generations, yes... I mean, every third generation", Professor Trelawney said, her face showing a hint of unease.
Umbridge's smile widened. She snapped her clipboard shut and said, "I would like you to make a prophecy for me. It will determine your teacher rating."
The young wizards in the classroom, hearing their conversation, put down their books and looked over curiously.
Trelawney glared at Umbridge angrily. After a moment, she said irritably, "I cannot give you a prophecy. The Inner Eye does not work on command!"
"I see, I think I understand your meaning", Umbridge said, shaking her head in disappointment. She picked up her clipboard and prepared to leave.
But Trelawney's dark voice suddenly rang out from behind her.
"If I were you, I would leave this school immediately!"
Umbridge's steps halted, and she turned around, surprised.
At this moment, Trelawney had transformed, crouching low in her chair, her body trembling slightly. She looked extremely eerie, muttering softly.
"I see darkness on you... scars and pain... you are in for a terrible fate, Umbridge!"
"This is a Curse... This is a Curse!" Trelawney's eyes were wide open, and she screamed shrilly, her high-pitched voice making the nearby young wizards cover their ears involuntarily.
Umbridge was also startled, stepping back two paces instinctively. Her face turned red with rage as she shouted, "Trelawney, were you just cursing me?"
Trelawney's face was pale, looking as if she had expended too much energy. She panted heavily, her gaze towards Umbridge filled with fear, but she affirmed, "It was a Prophecy... the Prophecy you wanted!"
"Prophecy? But I've heard many students mention that you love to terrify First-years at the start of the year, telling them they will die a terrible death this year, right?" Umbridge glared at Trelawney, asking sharply.
However, Trelawney remained stubborn, insisting that this was the future she had seen. Annoyed, Umbridge angrily stormed out.
"Wow, I never knew Professor Trelawney could be so brave!" Ron watched Umbridge's angry back as she left, then looked at Trelawney's frail figure, expressing his admiration.
In recent days, Umbridge had reviewed six teaching Professors, and Professor Trelawney was the most resolute among them all!
"I don't think it's just bravery. Have you forgotten the Prophecies Professor Trelawney made in previous years? Many of them have come true. Perhaps this is a genuine Prophecy!" Hermione said seriously.
From her observations, while Trelawney often spoke nonsense in her normal state, her words were always true when she was in an abnormal state.
"Wouldn't that be great? It means Umbridge is in for a lot of trouble soon!" Ron said with a sense of schadenfreude.
"Up until now, no Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor has managed to stay for a full year", Harry nodded, feeling a rare sense of gratitude for Voldemort's Curse.
Ivan did not join the trio's discussion. To him, Umbridge was merely a minor character. If not for her usefulness, he would have driven her out long ago.
The only thing that piqued Ivan's curiosity was whether Trelawney's Prophecy could be altered.
He had not forgotten the Prophecy from fifteen years ago, which clearly stated that Harry and Voldemort, as mortal enemies, could only die at each other's hands.
If he destroyed all the Horcruxes and killed Voldemort in a Duel, wouldn't that mean the Prophecy had been broken?
Ivan was so engrossed in this thought that he didn't even hear Hermione's call.
The young witch sighed and tugged at Ivan's sleeve. "What's wrong, Hermione?" Ivan finally snapped back to reality and asked.
"I said, we've already wasted over a month. We can't keep waiting like this!" Hermione declared firmly. "The Dark Lord and the Death Eaters could attack at any moment. If the Ministry of Magic refuses to let us properly study Defense Against the Dark Arts, then we should take it upon ourselves to learn the Magic that can protect us!"
