Chapter 771: Feng Ye's Story
Chapter 771: Feng Ye's Story
The cargo ship slowly departed from the port, fading from view in Magnolia.
Wendy lay by the window, quietly admiring the sea and the clear blue sky, occasionally tilting her head to steal a glance at Feng Ye, who sat reading a book not too far away.
Unbidden, her mind began to recall a topic often discussed by Lisanna and the others.
It had started with Lisanna, and the question was a simple one: "If you were to get married in the future, what kind of person would you want to marry?"
This question was a bit too far-fetched for Wendy, and when she first heard it, her little face turned red, and she curled up in the corner, too embarrassed to join the conversation.
Marriage... It was too embarrassing to even think about.
And it felt so distant.
Two conflicting thoughts battled within her. One was content with the present, where she was Feng Ye's most beloved and doted-upon little sister. The other wished to grow up a little more and become closer to him.
Whenever the latter thought surfaced, her cheeks would flush, and she would shyly lower her head or avert her gaze, too embarrassed to sneak glances at Feng Ye.
And it was at this moment that Feng Ye suddenly closed his book and, looking at Wendy, offered her a gentle smile. "Would you like to hear a story, Wendy?"
Wendy started, her face lighting up with curiosity, and she nodded obediently. "Yes! Is it the story from four hundred years ago?"
"No," Feng Ye replied with a soft smile. "I've already told you a bit about that. The story I want to share now is from an even more distant past."
"I had originally planned to tell Elsa first," he continued, "but since I'm accompanying you on this trip, I thought perhaps I could share it with you first."
The more he grew, the lonelier and more solitary he became, and the more there was that he couldn't share or confide in others.
Feng Ye cherished this world and adored Wendy, Elsa, and Mavis for the very reason that he could confide in them and tell them stories from his past.
He knew they would listen and accept him without judgment.
"More distant?" Wendy tilted her head, a curious expression on her face, before scooting closer and sitting on the edge of the bed, her eyes shining with anticipation.
Feng Ye turned his gaze toward the porthole, beyond which the sky stretched into the distance. "Yes, it's a story from a long time ago."
"Once upon a time, there was a person whose soul traveled across worlds and arrived in another realm—a world of ninjas..."
"He became a ninja, and then..."
"...through relentless hard work and unwavering dedication, he trained tirelessly from a young age, taking one step at a time, gradually growing stronger, never stopping until he reached the pinnacle of that world and became its strongest ninja."
Feng Ye paused in his narrative as the sky outside the porthole darkened with the approaching night. Stars twinkled in the heavens, their light reflecting off the sea.
He turned to look at Wendy.
Wendy, who had been hanging on to his every word, couldn't help but whisper, "So, that ninja was you, Brother Feng Ye?"
As a mage who had experienced Edolas and knew of the existence of other peculiar parallel worlds, it wasn't difficult for her to understand that Feng Ye's story extended to the pinnacle of the ninja world.
Feng Ye smiled gently and reached out to ruffle her hair. "It's getting late. Time for bed. I'll continue the story tomorrow."
"Okay..."
Wendy nodded, feeling the weight of her exhaustion. She yawned and stood up, retrieving a small, white bathrobe from her wardrobe. After brushing her teeth and taking a shower, she changed into her bathrobe and climbed into bed, curling up shyly and sneaking glances in Feng Ye's direction.
But Feng Ye remained by the desk, immersed in his book.
Time passed, and as her eyelids grew heavier, she soon fell into a deep sleep.
After she had dozed off, Feng Ye closed his book, turned his head, and smiled. Reaching out, he gently ruffled her hair once more.
Feng Ye opened his eyes and breathed a gentle sigh before a soft smile appeared on his face.
Wendy was an angelic sleeper, always neat and tidy even in her slumber. She lay curled up beside him, her sleeping face incredibly adorable.
After a moment, Wendy began to stir, her eyelashes fluttering as she slowly opened her eyes. Rubbing her sleepy eyes with her small hands, she offered a shy smile upon seeing Feng Ye, her cheeks tinged with a delicate blush. "Good morning, Brother Feng Ye," she greeted softly.
"Good morning," Feng Ye replied with a warm smile. "It's time to get up and get ready for breakfast. By the way, this cargo ship is headed to Alvarez, and it looks like it will take about half a month to get there. So, be prepared to spend that long on the ship."
Wendy nodded obediently. "Yes, it's all part of our training."
In her heart, she silently added, "Being able to stay with Brother Feng Ye like this, even if it's on a ship for half a year, I wouldn't mind at all."
As he watched Wendy get up and head towards the bathroom, Feng Ye couldn't help but chuckle to himself.
Little Wendy was perfect in every way, except perhaps a little too innocent and naive, even more so than Mavis. Although she was young, most girls her age had already started to display signs of adolescence, and Elsa had certainly exhibited more mature behaviors at that age.
This was why whenever the girls got together to discuss such topics, Wendy would quietly lower her head, her heart filled with conflicting emotions.
Feng Ye wanted to comfort her and assure her that she was the most adorable, but he knew that such words might have the opposite effect, so he chose to remain silent and simply observe during those moments.
Breakfast on the ship was rather ordinary.
Feng Ye was quite particular about his food, so he used his spatial abilities to retrieve breakfast from the land. Although they were supposed to be embarking on a normal journey to complete a mission, using a bit of spatial magic didn't seem like too much of an interference.
After breakfast, Feng Ye returned to his book while Wendy found one of her own to read. As the afternoon sun shone through the porthole, Feng Ye closed his book and continued the story from the day before.
"The ninja became the strongest, and he gained the ability to traverse space. So, he traveled to a second world—a world of seas, filled with all sorts of strange abilities and countless pirates..."
"He became a traveler in that world, sailing along a route known as the Grand Line..."
"...And so, he eventually obtained the power he sought in that world and was revered as a god."
Feng Ye paused in his narrative, his gaze shifting from Wendy's face to the starry sky outside the porthole.
Tilting her head cutely, Wendy listened intently. "But why did Brother Feng Ye have to seek power in one world after another? Weren't you already like a god in the first world?" she asked in a soft voice.
"Hmm..."
Feng Ye smiled gently. "That's a good question. Perhaps it was a pursuit of an unchanging heart."
His story had omitted some details, but Wendy was sharp enough to catch on. After hearing the day's tale, she had grasped the key point.
Wendy blinked, her eyes reflecting a mix of understanding and confusion. "Does that mean, Brother Feng Ye, that you will eventually leave this world too?"
"No," Feng Ye replied with a serene smile.
Wendy's eyes widened in surprise, a hint of joy flickering in their depths. "Why not?"
Feng Ye ruffled her hair affectionately. "Because I've already gained enough power. I can take this world with me on my travels, and I can always return here whenever I want. So, there's no need to leave."
