Chapter 77: The Tide Turns — Shadow of the Unicorn!
Chapter 77: The Tide Turns — Shadow of the Unicorn!
In an instant, the Fiendfyre coiling around Voldemort transformed into the shape of a long serpent, surging towards Ivan.
Ivan, who had read the original story, knew all too well the power of Fiendfyre. It could destroy even Horcruxes, and the Fire-Resistant Potion he had taken could not withstand such flames.
"Here, catch the Philosopher's Stone!"
Just as it was about to touch him, Ivan shouted loudly, pretending to throw the Philosopher's Stone into the mouth of the Fiendfyre serpent.
"No!" Voldemort's snake-like face suddenly contorted, forcing the Fiendfyre to change direction and collide with the wall beside him.
Ivan glanced at the rapidly melting bricks on the wall, swallowed hard, and sneaked a look at the countdown for reinforcements, which had only passed twenty seconds.
Ivan had never felt five minutes pass so slowly, but he still gripped the Philosopher's Stone in his hand even tighter.
Voldemort, seeing Ivan's actions, knew he had been tricked. While enraged, he dared not use the Fiendfyre spell again, unsure if the Philosopher's Stone could survive the burning.
However, even without the Fiendfyre spell, Ivan's situation did not improve, as Voldemort, a master of dark magic, knew far more than just a few spells.
The only thing keeping Ivan going was the fact that Voldemort's condition was continuously deteriorating. Not only had this body, belonging to Quirrell, been burned by the flames, but it had also lost a significant amount of life force. It was a miracle that it was still standing.
Each time Voldemort cast a spell, he was draining the last bit of life force from this body. If he took a few more steps, it might fall apart at any moment.
This was exactly what Ivan wanted to see.
"Are you just going to hide like a coward?" Voldemort shouted in frustration, casting another Reducio, the powerful magic shattering the stone pillar Ivan was leaning on into two pieces.
Taking advantage of Voldemort's limited mobility, Ivan darted around the spacious room, occasionally using a Transfiguration Spell to alter the environment or casting spells like Flame Spell and Multi-Bullet Spell to harass Voldemort. For a while, it seemed like they were evenly matched.
Enraged to the point of near collapse, Voldemort finally lost his composure and no longer held back.
From a distance, Ivan could clearly see the flesh on Voldemort's burned face suddenly wither, and a large cloud of black mist emerged from his damaged body, spreading towards Ivan.
"Obstacle Charm!" Ivan tried to erect a series of magical barriers in front of him, but the black mist surrounded him from all directions, and using the Flame Spell to burn it was ineffective.
Before being completely enveloped, Ivan managed to cast an Aronia Charm on himself, but this layer of defense was quickly breached by the black mist.
The composition of this black mist was unknown, and as it enveloped him, Ivan felt a surge of negative emotions in his mind. Worse still, the mist quickly seeped into his body through his mouth, nose, and pores.
A bone-chilling cold spread throughout his body, and Ivan felt his heat and life force being drained away by the black mist. Even his rapid thoughts began to slow and become numb.
At this moment, the Pendant hanging around Ivan's neck emitted a faint glow, allowing him to maintain a semblance of consciousness in the black mist.
However, this protection was not infinite. As time passed, cracks began to form in the center of the Pendant.
The protective power of the Pendant allowed Ivan to survive temporarily, and more importantly, he felt a warm current surge from his heart, filling his body with magical blood.
Ivan, whose mind had been paralyzed, regained his ability to move. The tip of his tightly gripped wand emitted a glaring white light, and the black mist surrounding him dissipated like melting snow on a sunny day.
At the same time, the System notification sounded in Ivan’s mind.
[Ding, Task: Vengeful Promise, Status Updated: Bloodline Magic temporarily unlocked, please check.]
Ivan, who had just escaped danger, couldn't help but divert a bit of his attention to check.
[Task: Vengeful Promise
Objective: Kill Quirrell
Description: Since you are currently facing your enemy, you have temporarily gained Cecilia’s approval. If you wish to retain this power, you must complete your promise as soon as possible.
Note: Bloodline Magic [Shadow of the Unicorn] Unlocked!]
Ivan saw that the question marks in the Bloodline Magic section of the System had disappeared, replaced by the Shadow of the Unicorn, which glowed with a blue light!
With the mental acceleration provided by the experience card, Ivan quickly mastered the new ability. With a wave of his wand, more white light poured out, gradually forming the shape of a Unicorn, like a phantom.
It was as beautiful, proud, and sacred as the Unicorn Ivan had seen in the Forbidden Forest, the only difference being that its form was entirely made of white mist, appearing more ethereal and elusive. Its eyes were a deep red, staring intently at the figure of Voldemort in front of it.
"Bloodline Awakening?" Voldemort, who had been the caster of the black mist, was now in a state of shock.
"No, no, this isn't a Bloodline Awakening", Voldemort quickly corrected himself.
Bloodline Awakening refers to the phenomenon where members of ancient wizarding families with special bloodlines, upon reaching a certain level of power or experiencing significant trauma, can activate the latent special bloodline within them, gaining some extraordinary abilities.
However, these bloodline powers have weakened over generations, and it’s hard to say how much strength they can provide. For someone like Ivan to integrate the power of a magical creature into a spell is almost impossible!
Moreover, Voldemort recognized this Unicorn with absolute certainty; it was the same one that Quirrell had killed earlier. Now, it appeared before him in this state, which left only one possibility.
This first-year young wizard had successfully completed the most dangerous bloodline fusion experiment in the magical world and survived, stealing a portion of the Unicorn's power!
While Voldemort was in a state of shock, Ivan quickly familiarized himself with his new power. He distinctly felt his vision split into two parts: one from his own eyes and the other from the Unicorn’s eyes. His brain seemed to control two bodies.
"The tables have turned", Ivan said coolly, looking at Voldemort, whose face was gaunt from the excessive draining of his life force.
This was an incredibly magical feeling, giving Ivan unparalleled confidence. After being chased and nearly consumed by the black mist, even a clay figurine would have some anger!
Now, it was finally time to fight back.
