Chapter 762: Toledo Never Misses Out on the Fun
Chapter 762: Toledo Never Misses Out on the Fun
"Princess Alexcia?"
Lanci repeated the name, unsurprised yet still somewhat taken aback.
"You know her?"
Abigail watched his reaction closely.
"I met her long ago in the Shadow World. We were both students and happened to enter the same fifth-tier Shadow World."
Lanci looked up at Abigail and replied.
Back then, it was his second Shadow World challenge at the Ekelith Academy, and he spent his student council duties patrolling the campus with Fred and Huberian, enjoying their carefree student lives.
Among the twelve challengers in four teams at the Cathedral Villain's Dinner, aside from Lanci, Huberian, and Fred, there was a team from the Crusie Empire—the Destruction Saintess, the direct subordinate of the Destruction Bishop, and the third princess of the empire, Alexcia.
On the night before the vampire count's attack, Lanci and Alexcia exchanged information, giving her newfound hope.
In the end, as the Shadow World came to a close, Lanci promised Alexcia that he would come to the Crusie Empire to help her.
Lanci briefly recounted the story of how he came to know Alexcia to Abigail and the others.
"I do remember that Shadow World. It was where you tricked the Destruction Bishop's saintess to her death, and I was thrilled. I thought to myself that if the Destruction Bishop's son were to meet the same fate one day, it would be even more entertaining."
Toledo enthusiastically applauded.
Despite almost losing his life, he was still delighted.
"Later, the Destruction Bishop's son was indeed tricked to his death by that girl."
Thinking of the assault led by the Namantina, Talia recounted the event.
"I knew it. How could a straightforward man like High Priest Loren kill the Destruction Bishop's son? It had to be someone else's doing. According to my intelligence, Loren's student happened to have a travel record back to her hometown in the Namantina, so it had to be related to you. I immediately donated money to the Ekelith Academy, and it didn't take long."
Toledo proudly narrated the story behind the two million pounds in donations.
"That's why my account was short of so much money! You took my money to donate to the school, didn't you?!''
After hearing Toledo's words, Abigail calculated the date when her fortune mysteriously disappeared and realized what had happened. She could no longer contain her anger and grabbed Toledo by the neck, determined to end his life and become the bishop herself.
However, she found that she couldn't kill the eighth-tier Toledo no matter what she tried, and he didn't seem to want to resist, which took away her motivation to persist in this struggle.
"Since you know Princess Alexcia, Lanci, things will be much easier. I won't bother explaining much about Her Royal Highness, the third princess."
Abigail pushed Toledo away as if he were garbage and continued discussing the matter at hand with Lanci, Talia, and Ifatia, who were sitting across from her on the sofa.
"She is also someone that Barton trusts deeply. The reason he left the military to become a mafia boss was probably because of her. After forming an alliance with us, Barton introduced her to our group as well."
Abigail looked at Barton, the mafia boss sitting at the other end of the sofa, and said, "Princess Alexcia is someone who can resonate with the Cyrus Empire's national treasure, the Cyrus Sacred Sword. The ancestor's spirit can protect her from malevolent entities, and in turn, she can sense the presence of evil creatures that ordinary people cannot detect. After accidentally touching the Great Emperor Bald's sword, she saw many blood-colored shadows lurking near the palace and gradually became aware that the fate of the Crusie Empire rested on her shoulders."
Barton spoke grimly about Princess Alexcia.
At that time, the helpless Alexcia could only seek help from Barton, who was then the colonel of the Imperial Palace Guard. Barton understood that by sharing the truth with him, the princess was placing her trust and hope in him.
If this matter were revealed to the wrong person, Alexcia would undoubtedly face death.
Later, through a series of investigations led by Barton, who had become the head of the gray area, he finally confirmed the existence of insane undercurrents lurking beneath the seemingly peaceful surface of Brierda.
"The Cyrus Sacred Sword?"
Talia asked, as this was the first time she had heard the true name of the Cyrus Empire's imperial sword.
She had heard of "Cyrus," as Lanci mentioned it when teaching her history. The Cyrus Empire, which encompassed the southern half of the Southern Continent, was formed by the merger of three giants: the Cyrus Empire, the Elsia Holy Land, and the Wincy Free Federation. Among them, the Cyrus Empire was the final victor and the dominant force.
It was not surprising that the Cyrus Empire's royalty descended from the Cyrus Imperial Family.
"Even as the commander of the Imperial Palace Guard, I rarely had the opportunity to see the Great Emperor Bald's sword up close, let alone dare to appraise it. There is no detailed record of this sword in history, but I can assure you that it is the most powerful weapon in the world today, far beyond the capabilities of a typical epic magical artifact."
Barton shook his head,
"It not only provides numerous immunities and blessings to its wielder but also significantly enhances their strength. During the Holy War, an ancient emperor of the eighth tier at his peak wielded this sword and managed to hold his ground against a ninth-tier great demon."
The higher one's tier, the more one could comprehend the unreasonable degree of amplification it offered.
However, only those with royal blood could wield this divine sword.
"Could it be the undamaged Red Legend?"
Lanci stroked his chin thoughtfully.
"Red Legend?"
Many people present were unfamiliar with this term.
In their understanding, the highest quality of magic cards or artifacts was the orange epic tier.
Even the [Primal Tablets] only reached the orange epic tier.
"Orange epic can be considered the highest theoretical grade, but the Red Legend is an exception. We only came across a damaged Red Legend artifact once during the century-old turmoil in the Kingdom of Posen."
"
Lanci mentioned the incomplete Red Legend artifact, the [Pallaroni's Grievance Record], which he had seen in Pariyah, the City of Flowers.
"Will the vampires target it?"
Talia voiced her concern.
If not for the fact that the [Pallaroni's Grievance Record] would cause lasting harm to innocent demons, she would have coveted this red legendary book-type weapon purely for its strength.
Even a small fragment of it could bring about a qualitative change in Perlman in a short period.
"Yes, they will," Lanci concluded. "But according to Barton's description of its characteristics, the vampires should be more wary of it and want to get rid of it. That sword poses too great a threat to them."
Lanci was puzzled by this.
If the Crusie Empire had such a nation-protecting divine sword that repelled evil spirits, then in the timeline that the Goddess of Destiny had shown him, how did the vampires eventually break through the sword's protection and gain complete control over the Crusie Empire?
That shouldn't have been possible.
Perhaps there were others in the empire, aside from the vampires, who had greater greed and were plotting something, which ultimately led to the vampires' victory.
"Don't think too much about it for now," Talia said, echoing Lanci's thoughts. "The vampire threat is imminent. Do what's important before it becomes an emergency."
Talia sensed the doubt in Lanci's mind and spoke to him with his own words.
"Mhm." Lanci nodded.
It seemed that the princess had not given up and was still actively trying to save her nation.
With Alexcia's preparations in the Crusie Empire over the past year, as well as their alliance with her, Lanci felt that their chances of a frontal assault on Blood Moon City had increased.
"Is Alexcia still safe?" Lanci asked the three people sitting across from him.
They had long been aware that Alexcia was Silver Moon Reform's Number 5, so naturally, they would know more about her recent situation in the empire than he and Talia did.
"She's the one who asks for the least from the organization," Abigail replied, "because she's being watched by many vampires, and she's still in the imperial palace, so she has fewer opportunities to use the Sacred Communication Magic Card and speak."
"Ever since the Sixth War God, Violet of the Water Jade, left Brierda, Alexcia hasn't spoken," Abigail continued.
Usually, when Alexcia could speak, it meant she had left the imperial palace and gone to a trustworthy location with a shielding barrier, but she couldn't do that frequently.
Alexcia hadn't said a word during this time, probably because she dared not leave the imperial palace again.
"Maybe it's better to find a suitable opportunity to meet her in person at an event she will officially attend, rather than trying to contact her through the Sacred Communication Magic Card," Toledo suggested with a shrug.
After all, it would likely be difficult to get in touch with Alexcia before Violet returned.
In Alexcia's judgment, out of the First War God, Hyacinth of the Diamond Seat, and the Sixth War God, Violet of the Water Jade Seat, at least one of them should be reliable. So, she would only dare to leave the core barrier of the imperial palace and act in Brierda when both War Gods were present.
"Is she safe now, being alone in the Crusie Imperial Palace?" Ifatia asked, all too familiar with the feeling of being alone in a perilous situation.
Alexcia's living environment was even more oppressive than hers.
"The direct descendants of the royal family are protected by the bloodline of the Ninth-Tier Ancestor, as well as the power of the nation's faith," Barton explained about his former workplace. "On top of that, they have royal magical artifacts, so it's not easy to threaten a member of the imperial family within the palace. And after resonating with the divine sword, her resistance to spiritual magic is extremely high."
"That's good," Lanci said, assured of Alexcia's situation, and he didn't need to rush to find her and reassure her.
He would keep the promise he had made to Alexcia.
After all, it was one of the few big orders he had ever taken.
"Mr. Barton," Lanci said, realizing that Barton was an excellent insider within the empire, with an exceptional understanding of the imperial military. "In your opinion, which of the Empire's War Gods have shown suspicious behavior or are likely to be under someone's control?"
There were things he couldn't ask even in the Special Operations Department, but he could ask Barton without hesitation.
"As far as I know," Barton replied, understanding Lanci's intention, "the ones whose wills have likely been altered include the Fourth War God, Jasper of the Jade Seat; the Fifth War God, Rutile of the Mica Seat; the Eighth War God, Beryl of the Opal Seat; the Ninth War God, Amethyst of the Laren Seat; and the Twelfth War God, Cat's Eye of the Bianca Seat."
Barton was aware of Lanci's suspicions.
According to the latest public information from the vampires, they had a Ninth-Tier Ancestor who could control wills, and this matched his own deductions based on various signs.
These five War Gods were all pacifists, but after a while, they suddenly became advocates for war.
"What about Carnelian, Blood Jade, and Emerald? Are they not necessarily under someone's control?" Lanci asked about the Third War God, Carnelian of the Red Agate Seat; the Seventh War God, Philip of the Blood Jade Seat; and the Eleventh War God, Simon of the Emerald Seat.
These three War Gods had left an impression on him.
"Carnelian and Blood Jade were already inclined towards war long before the conflict began," Barton explained, drawing numbers on the coffee table with his finger. "As for Emerald, he's a neutral party, but once the war started, he would join."
One, two, six, and ten were neutral.
Three, seven, and ten were radicals.
Four, five, eight, nine, and twelve were conservatives.
"That makes sense," Lanci agreed.
Strategically, the three War Gods who hadn't been controlled were placed in the eastern theater of war.
As for the western hub, the controlled War Gods could be grouped together, and the slight risk of them seeing through each other would be eliminated.
"So, aside from the Third and Seventh War Gods, there's another radical?"
Ifatia counted and realized that there was more than just Geatte and Philip who favored war.
"The Tenth War God, Red Beryl Seat's Julius, is always eager to seize power and take the initiative. He's just waiting for the day when Haxintos falls so he can be the first to take over as Commander-in-Chief and lead the Imperial Army to victory."
Barton's expression turned complex, as if he understood all too well the extent of Julius' poor leadership skills.
Having been in the military, Barton, as one of the top powerhouses closest to the War Gods and with the potential to become one himself in the future, had interacted with most of them.
"..."
Lanci and Talia had indeed heard about him.
The Tenth War God, Red Beryl Julius, had been exceptionally active on the battlefield lately, but he was too eager for merit and impulsive.
Rumor had it that he was the only man capable of raising the First War God Haxintos' blood pressure.
"What about the First War God? What's your take on his situation?"
Lanci's primary concern at the moment was the First War God, Haxintos, who was stationed at the Brierda Imperial Army Headquarters.
If the First War God was under the control of the vampires, the severity of the problem would likely far surpass that of the other War Gods.
"In my impression, he's a gentle and powerful man, deeply trusted and loved by the people of the Cyrus Empire," Barton replied with a hint of fatigue in his voice.
"But his position is complex and contradictory. As a commoner, he is dedicated to maintaining imperial power while balancing the conflicts between the nobility and the common folk. If it truly came to a point where the internal strife within the Empire became unavoidable, he might agree to this war for the sake of the Empire."
Barton believed that Haxintos might have been manipulated into starting the war, but he couldn't be sure.
"..."
Lanci gained a general understanding of the situation regarding several War Gods and the internal affairs of the Empire.
In the future, if he had the opportunity, he would try to gather more information about the War Gods from people within the Empire, which might help him better deduce whether they were being controlled or not.
For example, the Ninth War God, Amethyst Seat's Ryan, the head of the Roland Marquis family, was Euxula's older brother. Lanci and Talia now had almost enough intelligence from Euxula to confirm that Marquis Ryan had been manipulated by La'chal, the vampire progenitor.
"Talia and I will be heading to the Shadow World next week, so we might be out of contact for a while. But as soon as we're back in the real world, we'll get in touch with you."
Lanci glanced at the clock, stood up, and addressed the group.
As they chatted, time flew by, and it was almost time to leave.
It was about time for them to part ways and head back to their respective homes.
"No problem. We can still meet at Abigail's place. Buying a ticket to the opera house would be a reasonable excuse for us to gather there."
Toledo bid them farewell and assured them.
Indeed, the opera house served as an excellent secret gathering spot, and meeting there every once or twice a week to watch a show was perfectly inconspicuous.
"There's one more thing I need to trouble you with, Toledo."
Lanci turned back to Toledo and instructed him.
In Lanci's experience, Sid was the reliable type who got things done.
"I promise to find you the perfect fiancee who's worthy of you, Albus Dumbledore. You won't be able to resist her."
Toledo assured Lanci.
"..."
Talia didn't understand what Toledo was so excited about.
But that was just how Abi was. In the past, when they encountered complicated situations in the Demon World, Pranay would stay far away, but Abi would eagerly run over to spectate.
"It doesn't matter if you can't find one. I can always be the fallback option."
She said nonchalantly, but with a slightly raised tone.
"Do you really think my magic is infinite? Talia, you're truly a heavy burden."
Lanci was already feeling exhausted and was barely holding on.
He had relied on Talia's help multiple times that evening.
He had even summoned her to act out an entire play with him, and his magic was nearly depleted.
He would definitely have to sleep until noon tomorrow to feel refreshed.
"I'm not heavy at all!"
Talia's cheeks flushed, and she argued with Lanci.
Seeing that Talia and Lanci were about to bicker again, Ifatia quickly intervened.
"Don't worry, sister. It's necessary for undercover work. A fake fiancee? Why would you care? You're not even in the running anyway!"
Ifatia pulled Talia's arm and winked at Lanci, helping him ease Talia's concerns.
She knew what kind of woman would capture Toledo's heart.
And she liked that type too!
"Alright."
Talia reluctantly agreed.
"Ifatia, take care of your injury and get some rest."
She released Ifatia's arm.
"Okay, sister. See you! If my injury heals, I'll definitely come over to taste your cooking!"
Ifatia happily skipped back to the other side of the spatial door.
Talia watched as her sister and Barton returned through the spatial arc, and only when it completely closed did she avert her gaze.
She didn't want to be Lanci's fiancee anyway.
Only when the backup fiancee candidates from the Allied Forces and the Resurrection Church refused him would she agree to help him out of his predicament.
"Then, Miss Abigail, goodbye."
"Next time, just come find me directly at the opera house. I'm usually downstairs whenever there's an opera performance."
Lanci and Talia bid Abigail farewell and left the mansion, following Toledo up to the second-floor corridor of the Brierda Opera House.
"You two just focus on your trip to the Shadow World. When you're back, I'll use teleportation magic to bring your fiancee over, even if I have to drag her here myself."
Toledo confidently patted Lanci's shoulder.
"Tsk, what kind of fiancee could possibly capture his heart?"
Talia asked, without a hint of sourness.
"Could anyone be better than me, your princess?"
