Chapter 760: Breaking Through Again
Chapter 760: Breaking Through Again
Chen Chuan rode his horse with haste, the steed's speed was impressive, and it effortlessly traversed mountains and rivers as if they were flat land. Its endurance was exceptional, requiring almost no stops for feeding.
Perhaps due to the consumption of the same medication, many Fusion Zone creatures did not initiate attacks during the journey, which explained the Old Imperial House's preference for them.
The Great Prosperity Government's horses, though bred for speed, paled in comparison to this one. Chen Chuan could sense the difference, and he suspected the key lay in those special medications.
This was an advantage the Old Imperial House held.
Upon reflection, it was understandable that without these home-field advantages, the Old Imperial House would have been eradicated by the Great Prosperity Government years ago. However, he also realized that much of the reason for their survival lay within the Great Prosperity Government itself.
If not for the numerous companies and internal and external forces having connections with the Old Imperial House in the Fusion Zone, the current stalemate might not have existed.
This situation involved deeper interests and struggles that were not easily resolved.
Chen Chuan pushed his horse to its limits, galloping at full speed to catch up, and finally, just before nightfall, he entered the radiant area of the Radiant Relic. This way, he could continue advancing outward during the night without the need to halt and set up camp.
Currently, there was still some distance between him and Xu Chan's location, and the radiance seemed to be moving towards Xu Chan, indicating that there were no immediate issues there.
However, while the pursuit from behind had ceased, he still needed to be vigilant against attacks from the front and sides.
According to the information provided by Xue Shou, the Old Imperial House had deployed troops in all directions, even the Great Prosperity Camp on the edge of the Unknown Region was under heavy surveillance. No matter which direction they chose to break through, they would face direct confrontation.
Chen Chuan urged his horse forward, gradually closing in on Xu Chan's location. At that moment, he spotted an airship approaching from high above in the distance.
Judging by its trajectory, it was likely headed towards Xu Chan's position, possibly carrying elite personnel.
Fortunately, a portion of the Old Imperial House's forces was engaged in a standoff with the Great Prosperity Camp at the rear, and another part was needed to maintain suppression of their camp, making it impossible for them to deploy multiple airships from various directions for an assault, which would have been a troublesome situation.
Just then, Chen Chuan noticed that the radiant light in front of him was slowing down, and although it wasn't very noticeable, he immediately observed it.
Undoubtedly, Xu Chan had encountered enemy interception, and this airship was planning to land and engage in a pincer attack with the blocking forces ahead.
Chen Chuan reached out and pressed against the neck of the dragon-nosed horse, slightly stimulating the altered tissue within its body. Instantly, the horse's eyes turned blood-red, and its four hooves quickened their pace.
At the Great Prosperity Camp on the edge of the Unknown Region, the military personnel in the camp noticed the radiant light moving towards them.
They assessed the situation and concluded that it was highly likely that their side had obtained the Relic, which was why they had chosen this route.
An officer suggested, "The radiance is so distinct that the Old Imperial House's troops might obstruct us. I recommend sending a team to meet them."
However, someone objected, "We're already stretched thin with camp defense. How many can we spare? The Old Imperial House's forces are waiting for us outside. Even if we send people out, it's like sending them to their deaths."
"We came here to support the transport of the Relic. If we do nothing, what's the point of staying here?"
"No, we still have a role to play here."
An officer wearing a cloak spoke up, his voice grave, "At the very least, we're holding back a portion of their forces, and the situation isn't entirely clear. Our task is to report intelligence to the rear. Unless the team retrieving the Relic is right in front of us, I won't dispatch a single soldier without orders from above."
The speaker was the highest-ranking military officer in the camp, and with his decision, everyone had no choice but to wait for the telegraph from the rear base.
Within the Unknown Region, as the airship from the Old Imperial House chased after the radiant light, it gradually descended, and ropes were lowered.
One by one, figures climbed down the ropes, and when they were still some distance from the ground, they leaped, carrying various heavy equipment. They quickly formed a formation.
Each person was covered in a layer of thick white armor, towering at around 2.5 meters tall. On their arms were two hand-held cannons, and at their waists hung two throwing axes. Several ferocious beasts, resembling leopards and tigers, accompanied them, landing lightly and almost silently.
These were the tamed Crimson Maned Leopards of the Fusion Zone, known for their keen sense of smell, agility, and innate altered tissue. Even the Great Prosperity Government's exploration teams had to approach them with caution.
Now, after domestication, training, and comprehensive nutrition, they were even stronger than their wild counterparts, boasting more robust physiques.
They belonged to the White Reed Army of the Old Imperial House, a force comprised entirely of fighters. Each member was an elite, hand-picked from various fiefs of the Imperial Court, and those present here were all third-limit fighters, totaling twelve in number.
Ahead of them, another squad from the Flying Serpent Army was tasked with blocking the carrier of the relic.
This squad was renowned for its swiftness and specialized in rapid advances, utilizing a variety of long-range weapons such as firearms, crossbows, and throwing spears. They excelled in harassment and interception, effectively delaying the relic carrier, allowing the squad to prepare for a pincer attack from behind.
As part of their plan, another elite cavalry unit led by an Auxiliary General was rushing to their aid, and by this time, they were expected to be close by.
With the combined forces of these three groups, capturing the carrier seemed assured.
However, what they didn't know was that the rear unit had already been annihilated, making the planned encirclement impossible.
Chen Chuan rushed towards the direction of the airship, and with his accelerated advance, he soon reached the side of the squad. The thunderous hoofbeats could no longer be concealed.
Despite their focus on the front, the White Reed squad didn't neglect the rear. Chen Chuan's approach was awe-inspiring, and initially, they thought it was their cavalry coming to join them. But soon, they realized something was amiss as his speed not only didn't diminish but continued to increase.
The squad formed two rows, six in each, standing at an angle with over five meters between them. Each member inserted their forearm into the hand cannons on both sides, raising them together, aiming the muzzles at Chen Chuan's direction.
Chen Chuan's figure soon appeared in their line of sight. They didn't act immediately but waited until he was within a hundred meters before pulling the triggers simultaneously.
A loud boom echoed, and a cloud of white smoke burst from the muzzles, causing even their robust physiques to tremble.
Countless shrapnel exploded from the muzzles, momentarily covering the entire space in front of them.
Chen Chuan's gaze remained fixed on the front, and in that instant, the world seemed to slow down. Instead of a head-on collision, he abandoned his horse, sidestepped to the side, and appeared beside one of the rows. By then, the muzzles had just begun to spew fire.
He crouched, assuming a charging stance, and stared at the row of soldiers. With a sudden burst of speed, he slammed into them, creating a blast of air around him. The entire row was sent flying into the air, their bodies contorted, and their armor and equipment shattered.
To his slight surprise, as he reached the other end, a pungent smell of blood reached him. The Crimson Maned Leopard had matched his speed and pounced, its four claws extended, ready to leap onto him.
However, with his psychic perception, the creatures in the Convergence Zone posed little threat unless they were large or in swarms.
Chen Chuan stomped the ground, creating a large crater that halted his momentum. He watched as the leopard passed in front of him, and with a backhand grip on the Snow Queen Saber, he sliced it open from the side.
Meanwhile, the other six-person squad finally reacted, throwing a row of flying axes towards him.
Chen Chuan deflected the axes with his saber, causing the one that reached him to explode on impact. He leaped forward with his saber extended, and as he did, the trees behind him exploded like shells, falling in rows.
The well-trained squad quickly dispersed into a half-circle after throwing the axes, drawing their long spears from their backs and holding them forward.
But before they could finish their maneuvers, Chen Chuan was already in front of them, slashing each of them with his saber!
His speed was so swift that multiple afterimages of him seemed to appear in the field.
When he finally halted, maintaining a stance with his saber extended, the six soldiers froze momentarily before collapsing to the ground.
Each of their heads had been precisely split open, including the altered brains within.
In just a short time, Chen Chuan had annihilated the entire squad.
He swung his saber to the side, straightened his body, and raised his cold gaze upwards. The airship above was still struggling to take off, and those onboard had witnessed the entire scene.
The personnel onboard felt a chill rise from their hearts. The leader's throat moved, and he quickly ordered, "Quickly, send a telegraph to General Wei, inform him of the situation here, and also..."
He glanced at the Dragon Nose Horse that had been blown apart by the hand cannon, his voice slightly trembling, "We've spotted a horse resembling the 'Moon Chaser Yellow,' possibly ridden by Auxiliary General Wei. Please confirm the status of the rear cavalry unit and inform them that the enemy is exceptionally fierce, beyond our ability to confront..."
