Chapter 76: Lu HaiKong vs. Gao Shun (3)
Chapter 76: Lu HaiKong vs. Gao Shun (3)
September 25, 2017
In the first wave of the attack, Gao Shun seemed to hold back, or perhaps he was still getting acquainted with this new army.
As the first wave concluded, Gao Shun had gained a certain level of familiarity and control over this force. The second wave of the offensive was thus entirely different from the first.
The second wave was far more ferocious than the first, with the ground archers and attacking soldiers working in perfect harmony, putting Lu HaiKong under far greater pressure than the initial wave.
The pressure was immense, a feeling Lu HaiKong hadn't experienced since entering this world.
Lu HaiKong had always relied on his extraordinary talent to crush his opponents, never encountering such pressure before. This was a first for him.
Remarkably, Lu HaiKong wasn't discouraged by the challenge; instead, it ignited his fighting spirit.
He commanded his troops with heightened focus and dedication, his mind sharper than ever. In this state, Lu HaiKong's thinking became more agile, allowing him to perceive things he couldn't before, and his leadership surpassed that of the previous wave.
Despite Gao Shun's fierce second wave, Lu HaiKong managed to hold his ground, though not without some difficulty.
While he withstood the assault, Lu HaiKong's forces continued to suffer heavy casualties, even greater than the first wave. After two waves of attacks, his army of nearly two hundred mountain bandits was reduced to barely a hundred.
Many of these bandits were injured, a situation that even the most ordinary soldier from Shanwu County could recognize as dire. The mountain fortress was on the brink of collapse, and it seemed that one more wave could breach its defenses.
Zhang Ke, standing beside Gao Shun, stared at him in awe. Undoubtedly, Gao Shun had made the right decision, as his talent far exceeded Zhang Ke's expectations. However, watching Gao Shun command with such composure, Zhang Ke couldn't help but feel a twinge of jealousy as he witnessed the once impregnable fortress being pushed to the brink of defeat.
The third wave of the assault began without delay!
This wave was more powerful than any that had come before. In less than ten minutes, a breach was opened in the fortress wall.
Gao Shun's personal troops had finally entered the fray. In the previous two waves, Gao Shun had refrained from deploying his own soldiers, leading Zhang Ke to believe that Gao Shun valued his men and didn't want to use them as cannon fodder.
In reality, Gao Shun had been waiting for the perfect moment to strike.
Gao Shun, unable to personally engage due to his severe injuries, was well aware that only his own troops could breach the fortress's defenses at this critical juncture. And this was the perfect moment.
In the third wave, Gao Shun aimed to conquer the fortress entirely!
"Indeed, my command abilities are inferior to his, but Gao Shun, if you think this is enough to breach our defenses, you're overly confident!"
Lu HaiKong's eyes flashed with determination. "Wang Ti, you will lead the next battle. The remaining 'Bandit Chiefs' and I will join the fight. It's time to reveal our true trump card!"
At Lu HaiKong's command, ten near-vassal-level leaders sprang into action.
The mountain fortress's walls were merely a few dozen meters long, and with a mere ten near-vassals standing there, the situation was firmly under control.
The slaughter began!
Gao Shun's soldiers had already fought their way to the top of the walls and secured a section of about ten meters. As they saw the rest of the troops about to catch up and completely breach the fortress, they were poised to conquer the entire stronghold.
At this moment, Lu HaiKong appeared, gripping the Ornate Battle Axe with a slanted hold. His gaze was icy, and he charged forward at incredible speed.
The moment Lu HaiKong swung the axe, a bloody flower of gore bloomed, releasing a cruel and dazzling display.
Within ten meters and less than a minute, the ten or so soldiers originally standing there were all slaughtered. When Lu HaiKong stood atop the wall, his body drenched in crimson, and beckoned to the county troops below, one could clearly see fear resurfacing in their eyes.
"Damn it! How could I have forgotten about these guys? Now things are going to get tricky!"
Zhang Ke watched as Lu HaiKong, standing there, caused soldiers within a few meters to instinctively avoid him. His face turned ashen, for just a moment before Lu HaiKong struck, Zhang Ke had believed victory was within reach.
"They've finally made their move, which means they're basically at their wit's end. This battle is as good as won for us!"
Gao Shun grinned confidently.
Immediately, the battle flag behind Gao Shun waved, and the soldiers launched another fierce assault.
In the third wave of attacks, which lasted for a long time, Lu HaiKong stood atop the wall, and the enemy's offensive never ceased. Lu HaiKong himself lost count of how many times he had swung his axe, only feeling his strength gradually waning and the Ornate Battle Axe growing heavier in his grip.
Lu HaiKong could clearly sense that the mountain bandits who had stood beside him, filling in his attack gaps, were dying one by one. Eventually, Lu HaiKong found himself alone, with no one else by his side.
Lu HaiKong looked up and realized that at some point, the entire wall was left with only eleven of them. Everyone else, whether soldiers or bandits, had fallen.
At this point in the battle, Lu HaiKong's side was truly at their wit's end, but Gao Shun's side hadn't gained much advantage either.
Out of the original thousand soldiers, after three waves of attacks, Gao Shun's remaining troops numbered less than five hundred. Among these, the majority were archers, with fewer than a hundred close-combat soldiers.
Both sides were exhausted from the prolonged battle. Despite victory seemingly within reach, Lu HaiKong and his ten near-vassals stood firm like an impenetrable barrier, preventing Gao Shun from making any headway.
Even with the archers unleashing a continuous rain of arrows, Lu HaiKong's side was well-prepared with cover, ensuring they remained unscathed. If the soldiers tried to capitalize on this opportunity and charge forward, they would quickly be repelled.
However, even with this stalemate, Gao Shun only needed to hold out a little longer for victory to be within their grasp. But at this juncture, he had no choice but to temporarily retreat.
The soldiers couldn't take it anymore, and neither could Zhang Ke!
