Chapter 76: Fierce Beasts
Chapter 76: Fierce Beasts
Bororo Bororo
Kuro soared through the sky, his fingers rapidly dialing on the Transponder Snail strapped to his wrist as he connected Lucius Kro’s number.
“Old man, don’t screw this up this time!”
As the island grew closer, Kuro sprang forward, landing on one of the smaller floating islands nearest the main landmass. These scattered isles, large and small, were linked by waters suspended mid-air, their surfaces dotted with anchored ships—Pirate Ships.
Lida glanced around in awe. “So many islands! From a distance, they looked tiny, but up close… they’re huge!”
Klah tensed, snapping open his suitcase and equipping his cat-claw gauntlets, Ten Blades.
This was Shanks’ territory. They couldn’t afford a second’s complacency.
A legendary pirate like him would have countless tricks up his sleeve.
“Hey! Hello?!”
Back at Headquarters, Lucius Kro twisted the black Transponder Snail on his wrist, frowning as static crackled in his ear.
No response.
He scratched his head, lips puckered in a perplexed arc. “Weird… why’s it silent?”
*
*
Kuro slammed his Transponder Snail shut, rolling his eyes.
We’re doomed. The old man’s chronic absentmindedness is back with a vengeance. No way he’ll help now.
*
*
“Roar!”
The trio had landed in a jungle clearing when a thunderous bellow erupted from the underbrush. A colossal mottled bear burst forth, drool dripping from its jaws as it roared at them, its body grotesquely misshapen—stunted legs, elongated arms, and palms the size of shields.
“Ah, a bear!” Lida’s eyes sparkled. “Those paws are massive!”
Kuro eyed it flatly. “This one’s not for eating.”
“Roar!!”
The bear reared up, charging with a thunderous crash.
Klah adjusted his glasses, disappearing in a blur. The next instant, he stood behind the beast.
“Fishman Karate!”
Five arcs of light cleaved downward, shattering its spine as his claw blades sliced deep, blood spraying like a crimson geyser.
Pushing his glasses up again, Klah didn’t even glance back. “Just a nuisance.”
“Roar!”
The bear spun, claws slashing.
“Shave!”
Bang!
Its massive paw cratered the ground where Klah had stood, but he’d vanished, reappearing at a distance, sweat beading his brow.
This hide’s thicker than Buggy’s rubbery form… and its strength matches that brute’s.
But Buggy’s a 300-million-Belly pirate—what’s this beast?
*
*
“Roar!”
As Klah prepared another strike, his eyes contracted. “Moonstep!”
He kicked the air, dodging a sudden blur of motion—a colossal leopard, all claws and fang, slamming into the spot he’d occupied.
“Calm Step!”
Klah dove, his claw blades flashing with slashes that carved five deep trenches into the leopard’s back.
Hiss!
“Agh!”
The leopard howled, its spine bending under the blow. Yet before Klah could follow up, its tail lashed like a steel whip, catching him mid-air.
Crash!
Klah sprawled backward, blood spilling from his lip. The bear roared, its hunched form blurring with unnatural speed as it closed the gap, claws raised.
“Moonstep!”
Gritting his teeth, Klah halted mid-air, leaping over the bear’s head with frantic Moonsteps, landing beside Kuro.
The leopard crouched, snarling low, its earlier wounds ignored.
“This isn’t happening…” Klah muttered.
That slash should’ve crushed steel. How is it still fighting?!
Lida frowned. “These creatures… they’re different.”
She’d traveled the East Blue for years, seeing countless beasts. This bear and leopard weren’t unique—just oversized, fiercer versions. Yet Klah, who could crush seasoned fighters, was struggling?
Kuro’s voice cut in. “Someone’s spliced island plants into a serum, mutating them. It’s boosting their size and aggression. Lida—don’t touch anything here. Could be contagious.”
He couldn’t recall the serum’s name, but the island’s flora was the source. No risks.
*
*
“Roar!!”
The bear, ignoring Klah, turned on the leopard instead. The two beasts circled, suddenly at odds.
“Ridiculous,” Klah spat, wiping blood from his lip. Crossing his arms, his claw blades gleamed at his shoulders. “Superspeed Shave!”
A gust of dust erupted.
Whoosh!
Five slashes tore through both beasts, carving the bear’s chest to the bone and cleaving the leopard’s head in a crimson spray.
“Bear Gust!!”
Hiss!!!
The bear’s front half split open, the leopard’s headless corpse crumpling.
Klah stood between their corpses, arms spread like an embrace.
“Hmph. Even these mutated beasts… not bad.”
Lida’s expression darkened.
She and Kuro trained Klah daily. His mastery of Six Styles and Observation Haki made him a natural commander—maybe even Commodore-level. A bounty of 70-80 million wasn’t out of reach.
Yet he’d needed full focus to down these two.
She activated Observation Haki, sensing the island. Her eyes widened. “Kuro… there are so many of these beasts. And stronger ones too.”
Kuro gazed at the central island, teeth bared. “Shanks vanishes for twenty years and builds this? Not surprising.”
He understood.
Only those who prepared meticulously survived in this world. And Shanks? A master of survival.
