Chapter 747: Yifa Wants to Gossip
Chapter 747: Yifa Wants to Gossip
At one end of the long table in the Silver Palace, Talia was imparting her knowledge of demon cultural traditions to Lanchi, just as she usually did during their one-on-one card-making sessions.
"We demons don't need to be so particular about generational titles or age," she explained. "Can you imagine the chaos if we tried to keep track of ages and generations among our kind, with our longevity often spanning thousands of years?"
"Understood, Master," Lanchi replied, still reluctant to change the way he addressed her. It was as if he was clinging to this last bit of stubbornness.
"Just call me Tata," Talia insisted, feeling that Lanchi was being deliberately stubborn.
She didn't want him to address her with such a formal title that implied a generational difference, yet she also didn't want to deny their teacher-student relationship.
"Tata..." Lanchi began, but then stopped mid-sentence as he sensed that Talia wasn't comfortable with him calling her 'Teacher Tata' either.
"You might as well finish what you were about to say," Talia said, having already lost the motivation to continue the conversation due to Lanchi's deliberate pause.
Could they not take a break from their duties and just chat casually for once?
Was it more unbearable for him to skip her daily tasks than it was to kill him?
At times like these, she really couldn't be bothered to keep tally of his mistakes.
It was emotionally exhausting.
However, one thing was certain—she and Lanchi were of the same generation. There was no doubt about that.
Even his family thought so.
She had merely become his teacher due to her extensive knowledge, but that didn't change the fact that their initial encounter in the South Vanettina Domain was akin to a young boy meeting a slightly older girl, just like something out of a novel.
"Are there really authors who write about boys meeting eight-hundred-year-old girls?" Lanchi questioned, clearly skeptical.
"Seven hundred and ninety-nine! I was only seven hundred and ninety-nine when I met you!" Talia corrected him, tugging at his tie as her eyes glistened with unshed tears.
She must have forgotten to wipe away her tears completely, resulting in this display of watery eyes.
Moreover, physically, she wasn't much different from a human girl in her late teens or early twenties, so it was only natural for Lanchi to view her as a slightly older sister figure!
"Alright, alright, twenty... If we convert that to human years, you're twenty," Lanchi conceded, seeing Talia's tears and starting to panic.
"Ah, so my sister also has such an adorable side to her," Yifa remarked, sitting across from them, her chin propped up by her hands as she watched the bickering pair. She turned to Little Black Cat and added, "Tata has always been adorable, hasn't she, meow?"
"Meow," the cat boss agreed.
Hearing this, the two at the other end of the table froze in their movements.
They quickly straightened up, maintaining a proper distance from each other, and the atmosphere turned more professional.
"Did we say something wrong just now?" Yifa asked, pointing to herself and Little Black Cat. She wondered if they had accidentally uttered some sort of code word that triggered their emergency brake mechanism.
"No," they replied in unison, their calm tones belying any hint of guilt.
"Meow meow meow?" Little Black Cat pondered. They had merely said 'adorable', not 'adorable enough to eat'. Surely that wouldn't have set them off?
Or had new code words been added without its knowledge?
"Let's get back to business," Talia suggested.
"Are there any more questions about our situation here?" Lanchi added, seeking confirmation from Yifa.
Yifa suspected that the two were trying to divert the topic, but she had no proof.
However, it was true that she had many questions about the rapidly changing situation on the Southern Continent, even with the limited information she could gather from the Brierda Mafia.
Lanchi and Talia, on the other hand, had come from the Kingdom United Parliament Alliance in the north, armed with first-hand intelligence that was inaccessible to those in the empire.
"Sister, what about your combat strength here? Are there any other allied forces?" Yifa inquired, addressing both Lanchi and Talia.
"We can get in touch with the allied spies, but since they also see Lanchi's disguise as Professor Landel as an imperial force, well...you know how it is," Talia explained, giving Lanchi a meaningful look.
"I understand..." Yifa nodded, fully grasping why everyone mistook Lanchi for an imperial loyalist.
He had really muddled things up.
No one would doubt Professor Landel's loyalty to the empire.
"So, you can consider us your only two allies for now," Talia continued honestly. "When it comes to the allies, it might be better for Patton to make contact on his own. They may even be more willing to trust the mafia."
"That's more than enough," Yifa assured her. "Having you here, Sister, is more reliable than anything else for me."
Still riding the wave of joy from their reunion, Yifa felt a surge of hope at having Talia, an eighth-rank hero unit, by her side.
"As expected of my sister, in the past hundred years, you've managed to gather the nine Grand Demon Marks and become the new Demon King. I can feel your strength now, and it's incredible," Yifa praised, looking up to her sister with admiration.
Talia's expression froze.
While she was delighted by her sister's sincere praise, upon further reflection, she realized that she had only managed to match a wounded Yifa's strength due to the Demon specialty boost from the Nine Grand Demon Marks and the overall enhancement from the Sealed Tablet for summoned beings.
Now, Yifa's current strength far surpassed her own true body.
"Ah, ah, yes, that's right..." Talia's face reddened as she replied awkwardly.
With the atmosphere already so tense, she couldn't bring herself to tell Yifa the truth, nor could she easily explain their soul connection with Lanchi.
"You're still so humble, Your Majesty. Ever since I obtained three Marks, I've become complacent and haven't pushed myself like you, striving to collect all nine and becoming the Last Demon King, holding steadfast to the dream of restoring our nation."
"Well, I didn't really push myself that hard..."
Talia wished there was a hole in the ground she could crawl into.
She shifted her gaze cautiously, noticing Lanchi sitting beside her, his hands clasped together as he maintained a stoic expression, deep in thought.
Talia breathed a sigh of relief.
Thankfully, Lanchi didn't laugh at her.
Unexpectedly, he knew to remain serious at this moment.
Wait a moment.
She sidled up to the table and noticed Lanchi's mouth twitching, his fingers pressed against his lips to hold back his laughter.
"Lanchi!!!"
Talia immediately stood up, wrapping her arm around Lanchi's neck from behind and pulling him back.
"Ahhh, save me! Black Cat, help me! Talia! Miss Yifa is still watching us!" Lanchi shouted frantically.
"Meow... Agree to donate meow."
Black Cat didn't want to disturb their playful antics.
If Talia wanted to hit Lanchi, then so be it. If Lanchi wanted to be hit, then let him. In any case, it was all consensual.
Yifa's heart fluttered as she watched the interaction between her sister and Lanchi.
Every time she witnessed this contrasting side of her sister, the Talia in her memories became even more adorable.
"By the way, Black Cat, my sister and Lanchi seem to be very close, yet they're not together. Are there other rivals in the mix?"
Yifa gently touched the little cat's ear, whispering in its ear.
Any man who caught her sister's eye must be an exceptional being, and it wouldn't be strange for other women to develop feelings for him as well.
"This... meow."
For a moment, Black Cat's speech became inelegant.
"So, there are?"
Yifa guessed as much, her eyes sparkling with curiosity.
"How many?"
A mischievous smile played on her lips as she probed Black Cat further.
"Two meow."
Black Cat, ever the honest cat, replied.
"Wow, then there's going to be quite a show when we return to Ichtlyte!"
Yifa laughed, leaning back and pointing at the pair across the table.
While she hoped her sister would win, she had always loved watching catfights the most.
"..."
Black Cat used Transform, turning into a black loaf of bread, devoid of any emotions.
It had nothing to do with him.
Finally, when Talia and Lanchi finished their exchange, she released Lanchi, returning to her seat.
"Do you have any more questions for us?"
Talia acted as if nothing had happened and asked Yifa.
"Not for now."
Yifa replied with an innocent smile, tilting her head.
"Then I have a question for you, Yifa. What's with the injuries on your body?"
Talia's gaze turned solemn as she looked at the wounds on Yifa's body with a hint of pain in her eyes.
Starting from Yifa's neck were branch-like crimson fissures, and lava-like magical veins trailed downward, likely causing her relentless pain that prevented her wounds from healing.
"It started when I went to Blood Moon City last time. I took advantage of the Blood Duke's absence and sneaked into the city, but there was still a Blood Marquis left in the Blood King's Palace. Not only did I fail to rescue Migaya, but I was also injured by the Blood Moon City's bloodline barrier."
Yifa's smile turned bitter, "With that in place, the Blood Clan can easily locate me, and I also require a large amount of treatment to stay alive."
She had been too arrogant and impatient back then, thinking she could stealthily rescue Migaya.
Little did she know that she would end up in a near-death deadlock.
Her only chance of defeating the Blood Clan now was to cultivate to the point of invincibility and then confront them head-on, but she was well aware of how difficult that would be.
"This Blood King's Divine Fire can't be self-healed once it burns you. Only the Blood Clan is unaffected by it. In the Blood King's Palace, if you don't take the right precautions, you'll trigger it. Since it's a large-scale barrier spell that consumes the core of Blood Moon City, the Blood Clan can't frequently trigger it either."
Lanchi chimed in with an explanation.
"You even know about that, big brother?" Yifa asked, her eyes widening in surprise. She had heard that Professor Landel was quite extraordinary in Brierda, a far-sighted and insightful Imperial, but she never expected him to be so knowledgeable.
"Of course, I need to understand Blood Moon City if I want to develop the magic fission bomb," Lanchi replied confidently. He was delighted to learn that Yifa had been to Blood Moon City, and since she had challenged it once, she must know the coordinates of the city and have companions who could help her enter it.
"No wonder... no wonder..." Yifa murmured, as if everything suddenly made sense. She had wondered why Professor Landel's research topic was so important to him, and now she realized it wasn't a coincidence; they were working towards the same goal.
"I promised Shubelian that I would rescue Duke Migaya," Lanchi assured her. Now that they had found Yifa, there was only one person left to locate.
"Really?" Yifa asked, her voice cracking with emotion. She had never expected anyone to be so determined to help her find Migaya, and his words were not meant to deceive or comfort her but were a clear statement of his long-held mission, despite the near impossibility of the task.
"I always mean what I say, and I keep my promises," Lanchi said. He had made a promise to Shubelian a long time ago, and he had never forgotten it.
"Don't worry, Yifa. I thought this guy's people-finding skills were a fluke at first, but now I realize they're quite extraordinary. As long as the person is alive, he can find them. If he could bring the dead back to life, I would be truly convinced," Talia said, patting Lanchi's shoulder in rare praise. She was in a good mood now that Lanchi had kept his word and found her sister, and she felt that cooking for him for a few more years wouldn't be a problem.
"Thank you, Lanchi," Yifa said between sobs, wiping away the tears that flowed endlessly from her unseen eyes. She had never dared to dream of a day when her family would be reunited. She never knew that someone was working tirelessly to help them behind the scenes.
"It's alright now, Yifa. Your sister is here. I'm right here with you," Talia said, getting up and moving around the long table to comfort her sister. She rubbed Yifa's back and wiped away her tears, hugging her until Yifa's emotions calmed.
"But Blood Moon City is so difficult to conquer. When I think about it now, I just feel helpless. I'm such a useless princess," Yifa said, hanging her head low in dismay. Even with guidance on the mechanisms, she still felt she couldn't overcome the challenges of Blood Moon City.
"It's not your fault. Blood Moon City is a raid-level challenge, requiring a group of around twenty people. It's definitely not meant to be soloed. The fact that you made it out alive is already impressive," Lanchi said, understanding that Yifa's goal was to rescue Migaya. However, attempting to infiltrate Blood Moon City alone was a bold move. She must have had some kind of spatial treasure to force an escape.
"Do you plan to blow up the entire Blood Moon City?" Yifa asked, taken aback. She had assumed that Blood Moon City was a stealth-based mechanism, similar to a prison-type shadow world, and that rescuing Migaya would be enough to succeed.
"Of course. If we don't destroy Blood Moon City, we won't be able to capture those blood clans. With their base, they can always retreat into the shadows," Lanchi asserted confidently. He would not allow this menace to continue wreaking havoc under his Krexi Empire.
"You can do it, big brother! I'll help you however I can," Yifa said, her smile shining through her tears as she clenched her fist.
"Can you please not call me big brother..." Lanchi said, his voice conveying his discomfort no matter how many times he heard it. While Yifa's girlish charm was genuine, he couldn't shake the feeling of awkwardness under Talia's watchful gaze.
"Um..." Yifa hesitated, her index finger lightly touching her lips as she worried that Lanchi was displeased with her choice of address.
"Lanchi, Yifa wants to call you big brother. Is that alright?" Talia asked, a smile playing at the corners of her mouth as she placed her invisible spiritual hand on Lanchi's heart.
"..." Lanchi remained still, not daring to move.
"What can I say? He has no objections," Talia interpreted, giving her permission.
"Okay!" Yifa beamed, her smile bright and carefree.
"I..." Lanchi cycled through a range of expressions, feeling strange about Yifa calling him that. What if he got used to it? What would Shubelian think if she heard it? Lanchi felt that he wouldn't be able to face Shubelian if that happened.
