Chapter 74: Lu Hai Kong vs. Gao Shun (1)

With thanks to 'Yi Shi Mei Hao' for the reward!
...
The battle between Lu Hai Kong and Gao Shun was over in the blink of an eye.
From Lu Hai Kong's surprise attack to Gao Shun being swept off the wall by Lu's axe, the entire encounter lasted no more than ten seconds.
In the span of an eye blink, the county troops below the mountain fortress wall witnessed Gao Shun falling from the wall.
Gao Shun had always been revered as a war god by the soldiers of Shanwu County. His dramatic entrance and fearless charge atop the wall had greatly boosted the morale of the county troops.
However, this morale was short-lived. When they saw Gao Shun fall, their spirits plummeted. Almost every soldier stared at the falling figure, lamenting that even Gao Shun couldn't defeat the fortress, so who possibly could?
Only Gao Shun's soldiers reacted differently. As he fell, several of his men closest to him leaped down from the several-meter-high wall without hesitation, creating a human cushion for their leader before he hit the ground.
It wasn't until Gao Shun crashed onto his soldiers and lost consciousness that the county troops of Shanwu County snapped out of their stupor.
"Retreat!"
With Gao Shun's defeat, Zhang Ke chose to withdraw, or rather, halt the offensive.
This was a wise decision. Gao Shun's retreat had severely dampened morale, and even though Zhang Ke had previously breached Lu Hai Kong's defenses, attacking now, with low morale, would be futile.
"Congratulations on repelling the third wave of Shanwu County's offensive. You and your subordinates gain 100,000 personal experience and 1,000 allocable skill points."
"Congratulations on defeating the 'historical general' Gao Shun. You gain 200,000 personal experience and 10,000 allocable skill points."
"Congratulations on winning the battle. Your understanding of leadership deepens, and your command rating increases by 10 points."
This brief encounter brought significant benefits to Lu Hai Kong. If this trend continued, and he fought a few more waves, his 'mountain bandit leader' level would surely reach level 5.
At that point, their strength would experience another surge. Lu Hai Kong might even break through the 60-point barrier, and Wang Chao Ma Han and the others would reach at least 45 points.
War was indeed the fastest way to enhance strength, at least when below 80 strength points. Of course, it was also the quickest way to perish.
Although Lu Hai Kong had repelled another wave and even outmaneuvered the formidable Gao Shun, his situation remained grim.
His strength was still insufficient to defeat the enemy, and the food supply in the fortress was nearly depleted. Despite appearing dominant, Lu Hai Kong was actually teetering on the edge, vulnerable to being swept away at any moment.
This was the difference in foundation. Although Lu Hai Kong could hold his own against the county troops and even win several battles, it was to no avail in the grand scheme.
In the overall situation, Lu Hai Kong was still at an absolute disadvantage. His opponents didn't mind these minor losses; they were determined to pin him down. Even if they suffered casualties, Shanwu County could easily reinforce their troops from nearby.
But Lu HaiKong was different. He couldn't afford to lose, not even a single mistake, for it would mean total defeat with no chance of recovery.
Lu HaiKong had recognized this from the start, which was why he chose this battlefield.
This fort originally belonged to Cheng Dashan, and Lu HaiKong never intended to keep it. He merely used it to divert the attention of Shanwu County, ensuring they didn't focus their efforts on Wang Damaizi's fort.
Lu HaiKong's task was to ensure Wang Damaizi's fort remained unbreached for ten days. He didn't need to defend it; he just had to keep Shanwu County's attention elsewhere.
So far, Lu HaiKong's plan had been smooth. Not only had he drawn the county's attention, but he'd also fought several impressive battles, strengthening himself and his forces. Now, Lu HaiKong only needed to hold out for a day or two before abandoning this fort.
After completing the task, Lu HaiKong would return, having subdued Wang Fatzi, and with the 'Rally Token' obtained from Cheng Dashan, he'd find a suitable place to establish his own fort and develop his power.
Later, when his strength grew, Lu HaiKong even planned to subdue Gao Shun.
Okay, Lu HaiKong's thoughts were a bit lofty. Whether he could subdue Gao Shun or build a fort was for the future. For now, his priority was to defend and stall the county troops, and even with Gao Shun severely injured, Lu HaiKong was confident he could pull it off.
In the 1619 book bar, no mistake in the 110 version!
After Lu HaiKong's attack, Gao Shun remained unconscious for several hours before finally waking up.
The first person Gao Shun saw upon waking was Zhang Ke, which surprised him a bit. To be honest, Gao Shun didn't have a good impression of Zhang Ke, or anyone from the Zhang family for that matter. However, Gao Shun had to admit that this Zhang Ke was slightly different from the rest of his clan.
What Gao Shun didn't expect was that as soon as he woke up, Zhang Ke bluntly announced that he was handing over the command of the battle to him.
Zhang Ke, who had once emerged from a sea of corpses, was indeed a fearless warrior, even though his blood no longer boiled with the same fervor after all these years. Occasionally, though, his iron-willed and resolute side still showed.
After consecutive losses over the past two days, Zhang Ke had come to terms with himself. He knew that he no longer seemed fit for the battlefield, having lost his boiling blood and the courage to lead from the front.
Instead, in Gao Shun, Zhang Ke saw a reflection of his own fiery past. Especially when Gao Shun charged towards the wall, Zhang Ke felt his heart stir, as if a surge of hot blood was welling up within him.
If Gao Shun could hold on a little longer, Zhang Ke wondered if he could experience that boiling blood sensation once more.
But one thing Zhang Ke was certain of was that among his forces, if anyone could lead them to victory, it was Gao Shun. So, he made a bold decision, even surprising himself, to place the command in Gao Shun's hands.
On the other side, Lu HaiKong assumed that after defeating Gao Shun, he would withdraw from the battle. He never expected Gao Shun to confront him in a different way the next day!
