Chapter 739: Gajeel's Ambush
Chapter 739: Gajeel's Ambush
"Yo."
As Jet and Troy grappled with each other, a voice rang out from the darkness.
A man with messy black hair and multiple ear piercings on his face stepped forward from the shadows. He eyed Jet and Troy, a malicious grin spreading across his face.
"Who are you?!"
Jet and Troy, locked in their scuffle, immediately sprang to their feet, instinctively sensing the threat. Their gazes fell upon the man who had emerged from the darkness.
Stepping into the dim glow of the streetlamp, his identity was revealed—Gajeel Redfox, one of the members of the Phantom Lord Guild and one of the five Dragon Slayers who had crossed through the Eclipse Gate with Natsu, Wendy, and the others.
"If I'm not mistaken, you two are mages from Fairy Tail, right?" Gajeel said, balling his fists and grinning at Jet and Troy.
Jet furrowed his brow, his eyes narrowing at Gajeel. "You're that Iron Dragon Gajeel from Phantom Lord, aren't you? So it was you who was behind the incident at our guild!"
"That's right, it's me," Gajeel replied, his grin widening. "Your luck isn't so good today, running into me. And as it happens, I'm in the mood to beat someone up."
Hearing Gajeel's words, Jet glanced at Troy beside him and let out a cold laugh. "You think you can take us on? You're nothing but a rat who only dares to strike in the dark."
Gajeel, the Iron Dragon, was a notorious mage in the magic world and one of the Four Elements of Phantom Lord—Wind, Fire, Rock, and Iron. If Jet and Troy had encountered him alone, they might have felt a sense of dread. But with a companion by their side and only Gajeel standing before them, their fear was somewhat diminished.
It's worth mentioning that if it weren't for Feng Ye interfering with the plot, Juvia would have been one of the Four Elements of Phantom Lord as the Water element. However, due to Feng Ye's presence, Juvia didn't join Phantom Lord, and Gajeel took her place as the Water element.
"Hey," Gajeel grunted, wasting no time on further words. He lunged forward, throwing a powerful punch.
Jet and Troy quickly joined forces to block the attack.
But Gajeel's current strength, while comparable to Natsu's, fell just short of the S-Class level. Nonetheless, he was still far superior to Jet and Troy.
Add to that the inherent strengths of being a Dragon Slayer, the power of the Iron Dragon Metalicana coursing through his veins, and the ability to pull off miraculous feats in desperate situations, and it was clear that Jet and Troy were no match for him.
After only a few exchanges, they were overpowered and knocked out by Gajeel.
"Pathetic," Gajeel sneered, eyeing the unconscious Jet and Troy. He clapped his hands together, a mocking expression on his face. Then, with a swift kick, he sent them flying into a nearby tree. He flicked his wrist, sending a barrage of steel nails flying towards them, pinning them to the tree.
With that done, he turned and began striding in the direction Levy had gone.
...
Levy was walking down the path that led away from the park, her heart heavy with uncertainty once more. She lacked confidence in herself, even though Feng Ye had been kind to her. She wondered if doing something a little 'over the top' might cause Feng Ye to dislike her, but then she thought about Juvia's behavior, which didn't seem to have any negative consequences. The worst that could happen was probably that Feng Ye's feelings towards her would remain unchanged.
It was worth mustering the courage to try.
As these thoughts swirled in her mind, Levy's steps suddenly faltered. She had heard the heavy fall of footsteps behind her, synchronized with her own, echoing clearly along the quiet path.
When she stopped, the footsteps behind her also came to a halt.
"!"
Levy slowly turned her head, her eyes falling on the figure of Gajeel, standing ten meters away.
Her expression turned anxious, and her breathing became slightly stifled. After taking a breath, she immediately turned and ran, fleeing forward as fast as she could.
Levy lacked confidence in her combat abilities, as her expertise lay in research and the use of tool-based magic, such as rune and text magic. She knew that her strength was not exceptional, especially against a notoriously powerful mage like Gajeel, so she had no intention of engaging in a direct confrontation.
However...
Just as she took a few steps, a dark figure swooped down from the air, and with a loud crash, a thick iron pillar came crashing down in front of her, with Gajeel perched atop it.
"Running at the sight of me? Is that what mages of Fairy Tail are made of?"
Gajeel eyed Levy, letting out a derisive 'hey', his expression filled with disdain and mockery.
Levy halted in her tracks and took two steps back, her gaze fixed on Gajeel as she gritted her teeth and said, "You cowards from Phantom Lord only know how to ambush people in the dark, don't you?"
Bang!
Gajeel raised his fist and slapped his palm, creating a muffled thud, before jumping down from the iron pillar. He stood tall and asked, "No, I didn't ambush you from behind. This is a fair fight. Are you ready to face me?"
Knowing that escape was unlikely, Levy bit her lip, her fingers reaching into her pocket to grasp her magic pen. With a swift motion, she raised her hand and inscribed a word in the air.
"3D Text - Fire!"
Boom!!!
The word 'Fire' appeared in the air, transforming into a blazing inferno that rushed towards Gajeel. It looked impressive, but in reality, its power was mediocre.
Gajeel scoffed and, without dodging, swung his fist forward, effortlessly dispersing the flames and advancing towards Levy.
"Looks like that's all you've got," he said.
As his words landed, he lifted his leg and swept it towards Levy, intending to kick her away.
Levy rolled to her left with difficulty, barely avoiding Gajeel's kick.
Gajeel casually strolled towards Levy and lifted his left leg, which instantly transformed into a massive iron construct, slamming down towards her.
"3D Text - Shield!"
Faced with this attack, Levy, still recovering from her previous roll, was unable to evade and could only hastily cast another text magic.
The text instantly transformed into a white magical shield, hovering above her head.
Crack!!!
Gajeel's leg descended, striking the magical shield and instantly creating cracks that spread across its surface like ice fracturing under pressure.
Levy clutched her pen, gritting her teeth as she desperately channeled her magical power, trying to maintain the shield. However, she could only hold on for two seconds before it shattered under Gajeel's relentless assault!
Boom!!
As the shield broke, Gajeel's Iron Dragon Club descended towards her head.
Faced with this inevitable blow, panic flashed in Levy's eyes, but it was too late to do anything except raise her frail arms above her head and duck, hoping to minimize the damage.
One second...
Two seconds...
Contrary to her expectations, the anticipated impact never came, and the air suddenly fell silent.
Levy slowly opened her eyes, her expression bewildered, and lowered her arms, looking up to see a faint golden magical shield that had somehow appeared in front of her, blocking Gajeel's attack!
"This magical power... It's..."
She paused, her eyes widening as realization dawned on her, and a delighted smile spread across her face. She was intimately familiar with this magical power—it was Feng Ye's!
